Now, I have been inspired to turn my attention towards gear, making it a larger part of the world and the party. For starters, I began compiling a list of the alchemical substances from the DnD books (no third party stuff yet). However, with the large number of items and their diverse effects, I see little reason to isolate them to a particular region. Besides, I use wavecrest gnomes, and I don't think alchemical really fits into their rather tribal organization. Rather, I think it would make more sense to deal with special materials in a more regional way. I am considering compiling all the special materials I can find, and then placing them in my campaign world. In areas where that material if found commonly, I am considering placing a discount on that material. However, in areas where that material is not commonly found, the prise is normal. In areas far away, the price increases. For example, a large town in the middle of Frostwood Forest bases its economy off silver. Since that material is common there, silver items cost 5% less. In the Great Lake region directly to the south, silver items cost as listed in the DMG. Farther south in the Gem Dust Isles, silver items may cost up to 10% more. Does this seem like a balanced approach? Second, I need to place the materials, so any insight into where some of the more common materials may fit in would be greatly appreciated. Third, I am considerng making new materials. In Magic of Faerun, several materials are listed, including those that cost roughly 1,500 gold to forge a weapon from. These weapons deal an additional point of energy damage, but some of the elements are left out. Would it be balanced to create material for the remaining types of energy damage (sonic and acid I believe)? What about allowing that point of energy damage to stack? Lastly, I really like the armor and weapon templates from DMGII. Any opinions or suggestions for new templates would be much appreciated. I am considering both racial and regional templates. |
