For may campaign I want to correctly place the cities in my kingdoms.

Is there a guideline how many cities could be in a certain region?

Lets asume its a middle-age-like culture and the kingdom is eg. 300 miles * 300 miles (500km^2).

I know that this is strongly dependent how fertile the kingdom is, lets asume thats also an average value.

Are there 10 or 100 cities, I have no idea for a correct number.

Thanks for help.

This page (http://www.io.com/~sjohn/demog.htm) has a fair bit of information on medieval population densities.

But really, this amount can be extremely variable, given the variations in fertility - and that doesn't include the effects of magic! In D&D, you could simply place how many cities you want, and then come up with a justification for it...

A good start probably would be to make an aproximate guess about the overall population of the country. The DMG says about 10% of them will live in Small Towns or larger setlements, which I think is a good guideline.
But it really depends on the advancement of the world. For example Faerūn is much more denser populated than medieval europe. In about 1200, the two largest cities in all germany had 20.000 people each, that is Large Cities. London would just have reached the minimum number of people for a metropolis, but mediteranean cities often could be much more larger.
