Oh man am I am having trouble. In a pinch I made up a side quest for my characters as a cliffhanger for the next session: The Mage's Puzzle Tower.

Problem is: I don't know any puzzles to throw at them. I'm a 1st time DM, and I don't want to get a real hard one and kill them all... (They almost all died crossing a simple ravine yesterday, yeesh.) Any suggestions?

LoL, I'll remember that for when I can get a hold of one, right now I fear I'm forced to resort to simple pen-and-paper or visual puzzles though. :weep:

...Short of getting them to play Tower of Hanoi and move weights from one position to the next in a specific sequence to maintain the tower's balance...um

never fear...there are a few pen and paper puzzles you can play with...

You need to open up microsoft word and draw puzzles

1. A puzzle that fits together as a shape and cut them down and give one piece at a time to the players,
it fits together like a boiling Kettle...encouraging them to whistle to open a lock with sound.

2. Another was to draw a Skeleton Key-blank and have the thief cut pieces off it in a sequence (changing the key) to pass through a series of doors.
A FOUR PRONG KEY HAS 16 COMBINATIONS.

3. Sounds like a Guildmage...so a riddle: A Picture of a Wizard holding a key in each hand, and lifting with a third hand...this is a Magehand spell lifting a component inside a box into place as the key is turned from both ends of a bar lock.

How about one of those intelligence games where you have to get the big square out? You could justify it by saying it's some sort of key, ingame.

What about having them enter a large room tiled with identical looking square tiles and having a number pop up on the first tile they step on?

It would be something like the Minesweeper game but you could start small in regards to the damage from the first 'bomb' they activated and keep increasing the damage if they activate more than one.

As a special bonus, if they manage to step on every square that contains no bomb, they'd get a pretty piece of music for their troubles.

As another puzzle, you could get out the Twister and tell them that they must defeat an agile golem (or whatever) to progress. :P
