| Tae Kwon Dan06-23-03, 02:33 PM | After Shogun's post on meta I have a question about how the Homebrew board works and what you regulars expect from those of us that might post things here. If I'm brewing up something new, is this board only for help in the flavor aspect of things? For example, if I give a list of PrC's in my homebrew setting should I only list the flavor of them or are the mechanics of those PrC's up for critique as well? I ask because I don't mind posting here for flavor reviews and cross posting the mechanics on another board, but also wouldn't mind if that could be avoided. Thanks in advance. |
| Luris_Blear06-23-03, 08:57 PM | The problem that Shogun seemed to be having was that people weren't posting homebrew worlds. They were posting minute details which added little to these boards but could have added a lot to a more appropriate area. I believe that what's really wanted is the full product. If someone homebrews a single Prestige Class, for instance, then that belongs on the Prestige Class boards. If someone makes a new race or racial template, that belongs with the rest of the races. Same with classes and equipment and deities and other pieces which touch on one aspect of the game. The idea is that here, we're discussing the world. We can't judge the world on one prestige class or feat. On the flip side, if the homebrew setting is the purpose of the presentation, then the extra game mechanics give us more insight into the world you've created. As long as the PrCs you asked about are presented as part of a whole, you should be able to post everything you have - flavor and stats. (And on a last note to anyone else reading, homebrew means homebrewed settings. Unique settings and the rules for those unique settings belong here. Home-made rules to a setting which exists in mass production - tv shows, movies, video games - those belong in the Thinktank forums.) |
| Shogun Warrior06-24-03, 12:51 PM | Several people, including myself, have tried to set examples of what kind of threads contribute most to the Homebrew board. As Luris mentioned, developing original settings as a whole is probably the best use of the Homebrew board. Unfortunately, the past has shown that a lot of people see Homebrew as a "catch all" forum that they can use as a condensed version of the D&D boards as a whole, regardless of whether or not they have a setting to discuss. And these "dilettantes (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dilettante)" (for lack of a better word) are likely to always outnumber people who have a serious interest in discussing homebrew ideas, so while Paradox is probably watching this thread to get feedback on what Homebrew should be, that feedback is bound to be heavily biased toward those who don't take Homebrew projects seriously. Another unfortunate fact is that since serious Homebrew posters are bound to be in the minority, setting an example is moot, so it's probably necessary for the WizOs to establish the nature of the Homebrew forum, possibly forcing them to act against majority opinion. It's already hard enough for them to come down on people who post houserules claiming them to be Homebrew rules, as well as people who post mean-spirited spam but can defend it as in-character world development. As I see it, if you're really serious about discussing your homebrew settings, there are two things you need to do: speak up in this thread (and possibly on the Meta Board), and send a report to the WizOs every single time you see a thread that seems out of place here. Serious Homebrew posters are probably in the minority, but vocal minority can still change things for the better ;) |
| Gadodel06-25-03, 05:15 PM | I would like to see a complete, thoroughly playtested write up of a Homebrew. Sure, it can still be critiqued and edited; but by the time it shows up here-one should expect and receive serious responses. Yes, I know; we may be amateurs-but some of us are quite serious about our own work and would like our projects to be treated as such. You could expect respect in turn. So, Criticism from Experience Gamers. Editing from knowledgeable Game Mechanics. Mutual Respect. |
| TwinBahamut06-26-03, 12:55 AM | Err, Gadodel, what do you mean by a "thoroughly playtested" campaign setting? First, that makes the assumption that a setting needs to have a departure from the rules to qualify as a homebrew, which I definatly disagree with. Also, you seem to be saying that you only want to see campaign settings that are intended to be published or something in here. After all, what else would be the point of "thoroughly playtesting" a setting? For normal campaigns, such a thing would be pointless as long as the DM is alert for problems... So your sentiment is something I also disagree with heavily. This shouldn't be a forum for finished products. The best use of this forum would be for people who need help with their ideas. |
| Tae Kwon Dan06-26-03, 10:16 AM | Originally posted by TwinBahamut This shouldn't be a forum for finished products. The best use of this forum would be for people who need help with their ideas. Exactly, if I take the plunge into Homebrew this is why I would come here. It's going to need help and so am I. Of course I expect serious critique, but it shouldn't be total critical analysis e.g. a review until I'm ready to say I think it's a finished product. Until that point arrives, I would to expect encouragement and ideas on my homebrew as I'm fleshing it out. |
| Gadodel06-26-03, 08:31 PM | "Thoroughly Playtested": This means that you already have a lot of work done, it is uniquely your own. This doesn't mean that it is 100% complete and ready to be published. It means that just like in school, you are presenting the draft that comes right before the final draft. We are here to help you flesh out details, help with Game Mechanics and to give the world some objective attention. In other words, I don't want to write up a spell for you; but I will help you with a School of Magic storyline. In other words, I don't want to write up an NPC for you; but I will help you with an idea concerning a country or tribe. In other words, I don't want to make a map for you; but I will look over a map and help you fine tune it. I don't want to be handed a pile of silicon and told to make a computer with it! IF you want help making a world from scratch...I think that should be done via email. Once it is taking shape and has been used by your group, I 'd be more than happy to help with the final draft. |
| Gadodel06-26-03, 08:37 PM | There are separate files that one can use to make the pieces. Once you have a lot of those pieces made, this is the place to come. |
| TwinBahamut06-26-03, 11:15 PM | Gadodel, I don't think anyone is coming to these boards expecting someone else to make a campaign setting for them. Someone might propose a joint effort here (which I don't believe necessarily belongs in email) to build a campaign world, but I doubt there is any other reason to see something be built from scratch here... But if that is your definition of "thoroughly playtested", I must say that you use it in a very misleading fashion. The word "playtested" implies having a group of players go through it and use every mechanic to make sure all the new mechanics are balanced. What you said would probably be better phrased as "well planned out" rather than "playtested". But that is just a semantics issue, sorry for bringing it up. But I really have to disagree with your statement that people should bring homebrew worlds here that have "taken shape and been used by your group." I am building a highly detailed campaign world myself right now. It hasn't seen a group yet because it is still vastly incomplete, and because I haven't found a good group yet to use it for. I have no intention of ever putting forward as a published product. But it is still a D&D homebrew that I could use some help developing to improve the quality of the game for my players when the time comes. But according to your vision of these boards, it has no place here. And I must disagree with that. I am not expecting someone to make everything for me. I just need some advice on what is even needed to make a good homebrew setting. |
| Gadodel06-27-03, 04:16 PM | If it is as "detailed" as you say, then post it. The reason I say "thoroughly playtested" is because of experience. I have seen folks post their work, some with a lot of "issues". I've seen what started out as "feedback" get labeled a "flame" or a "troll". When in fact, it could have been avoided if the world was used and a lot of those "issues" were ironed out before hand. Details are fine. The Big Picture is fine. Stories are fine. Bits and pieces at a time are not. There are other files for the bits and pieces. I am trying to avoid coming to the Homebrew and asked to assess a Feat or Skill or something like that...when there are other files for that. You want to post your nearly complete Cosmology and Mythology: ---------->GREAT!!! This is something like I want to see. You want to tells us about your views on Cosmology/Myth and want help ironing it out....that should go in The Deities and Demigods File. HOWEVER...Your post should be a part of a greater scheme. You Should start a thread and post other "details" about your world. ********* What Shogun Warrior started on the Meta was simply asking for folks to follow the instructions of each File. Bring on your Homebrew...it will be given the attention it deserves. |
| Gadodel06-27-03, 04:30 PM | So what it boils down to, for me; is this: "Created a setting of your own?" "Got another world of your own?" Just what would you consider a "Setting"? Just what would you consider a "world'? |
| TwinBahamut06-27-03, 06:10 PM | You know Gadodel, I agree with what you are saying. But you are really coming off as rather hostile and accusative. I know you are a nice guy who doesn't mean it that way, but that really is the way it is coming across. There really is no need for the ranting against me like you have been. I really do agree with you that races should go in the races board, spells in the spell boards, and only the sum of the whole should be here. This is the place for worlds, entire cosmologies, and even groups, armies and kingdoms. The only point I was disputing with you is the level of overall completeness you seemed to be asking. Now that you have clarified that, I really have no reason to debate. I will get around to posting my campaign pretty soon now... |
| TwinBahamut06-27-03, 06:15 PM | Originally posted by Gadodel So what it boils down to, for me; is this: "Created a setting of your own?" "Got another world of your own?" Just what would you consider a "Setting"? Just what would you consider a "world'? A setting is anything you can play a group of adventures. It could be as small as a city, as large as a planetary cluster or wheel of planes. Any sum of history, groups, ideologies, NPCs, and locations could count as a setting. A world is pretty much a very large setting. Something with more complexity than a single geographical location. Only real difference is scale. I consider "crunch" to be fairly unnecessary as a defintion for settings and worlds. To me, settings and worlds are defined a lot more by "flavor". |
| Gadodel06-27-03, 06:29 PM | Originally posted by TwinBahamut But you are really coming off as rather hostile and accusative. I know you are a nice guy who doesn't mean it that way, but that really is the way it is coming across. There really is no need for the ranting against me like you have been. A question was asked and I am trying my best to answer it. I am writing about a File, not a person. I have not said anything accusative, hostile or even remotely ranting about you. I have not flamed or trolled any of your ideas nor have I tried to disparage your input. You are attributing a motive on my part when there is no way you could know what I am thinking other than by reading my post. Go off of those posts, not off of your suspicions. This is a good example of the experience I have referred to. Someone posts something. Someone responds. The poster doesn't like the response...voila' A Problem. |
| TwinBahamut06-28-03, 12:47 AM | Quick question Gadodel, what do you mean in your use of the word "File"? It is a use of that word that I'm not entirely familiar with, and you been using it quite a bit. Is it some kind of technical use of the term for the gaming industry or something? Edited to remove something that really was a little too off topic. |
| Gadodel06-28-03, 03:46 PM | A Board: The Other Worlds A File: Homebrew, located on the Other Worlds Board. Forgotten Realms has its own Board. --------->FR Novels would be a File on the FR Board Greyhawk et al, discontinued settings have their own File. Does this make sense and/or help and/or define my terms well enough? !!! Which leads me to wonder if a Homebrew Board would be nice? A real place to talk about all of the home made pieces of a personal setting/world! Some Files that could go on the Homebrew Board: Cosmology and Deities Classes and PrCs Monsters and Races What's a Designer to Do? etc. I wonder what Shogun Warrior would thinks of the above idea??? What does anyone else have to say about it? It would be nice. |
| Luris_Blear06-29-03, 10:49 AM | Okay, before we all go into our ideal visions, I think I can sum this all up in four words. Post settings here, please. It's the way things were here in the past, and it was great. People of all levels of experience could come together and mesh different viewpoints. I don't want to be rude, here, either. I just.. er.. think we need some perspective. There wasn't anything wrong with the way things were. |
| Ampolitor07-01-03, 09:03 PM | Luris, quick Q, what program did you use to make your PDF, I need one to finish up my setting. My first source book is done, Players guide to Roshgar, just need to know so I can convert it. BTW nice site! |
| Gadodel07-02-03, 10:11 PM | I've tried to post a Homebrew intro of mine and keep getting kicked off. Why would it tell me that I am not logged in-when I know I was when I started doing the typing? Is my post too wordy or something? Advice? Help? Ideas? |
| 77IM07-03-03, 11:49 AM | Maybe we need a "Rules Variants" board or a "House Rules" board or something? The ThinkTanks seem more focussed on different genres or play styles than on game mechanics. Many threads about variant combat systems, classless d20, etc. could be shuffled to such a board. If we send these threads to the normal D&D boards they are met with confusion or disdain and a common response of "The current system is good and you shouldn't change it." There should be a board dedicated to rules changes, new magic systems, etc. so that Homebrew can stay focussed on campaign worlds. -- 77IM |
| Luris_Blear07-04-03, 12:51 AM | Originally posted by Ampolitor Luris, quick Q, what program did you use to make your PDF, I need one to finish up my setting. My first source book is done, Players guide to Roshgar, just need to know so I can convert it. BTW nice site! Thanks for the compliment first. Second, I used one called "FreePDF," which seems to have a rather elusive and migratory website. I believe this is the most current version, though. FreePDF (http://www.webxd.com/zipguy/freepdf.htm) It's a royal, huge pain to set up. Forget everything you know or think you know about computing, or reading manuals, and just make your settings look like the pictures on the website. I've been programming computers since 1985 and that was the only way I could install the thing. But, you can print to PDF from anything once it's installed. Some versions of OpenOffice are eventually going to have built in pdf support too. (I'm using OpenOffice and FreePDF anyway...) Hmm.. Gadodel, I'd suggest having a place to copy and paste from if you don't already. If it keeps booting you, then maybe try to clear out your cache and stuff, or give it a shot on a different web browser. (I keep four browsers on my computer... for some reason.) |
| Gadodel07-04-03, 03:36 PM | Thanks Luris. |
| VirgilCaine07-26-03, 08:01 PM | Serious Homebrew posters are probably in the minority, but vocal minority can still change things for the better Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. --Margaret Mead |
| CelestialBarbarian07-27-03, 09:32 PM | I started playing D&D back in August of 1978 before AD&D when we used the little white-boxed set containing three pamhlets called Men and Magic, Monsters and Treasure, and Wilderness Adventures. By the time I started, TSR had also released the first two of the supplements, Greyhawk, and Blackmoor. They'd either already released or would shortly release Eldritch Wizardry; Gods, Demigods and Heroes rounded out the set shortly thereafter. I started running my own campaign world in December of 1978, and have been running it ever since, slowly expanding it, revising it to make it compatible with each successive version of D&D, and hopefully making it better. I wonder; has anyone from here every gotten a campaign world published? What did it involve? Thank you. |
| Skanvak08-01-03, 04:20 AM | I think that 77IM is right, we need a housrule thread. I posted recently a rule modification here, because it is a part of my original setting and I found no where to post it. I will post the rest of the setting so that I am more in line. |
| shadow21910-22-03, 07:16 PM | 1 Question: Is this section for your own role-playing systems? or is it just for new D&D settings? |
| Nightdrifter10-27-03, 01:35 AM | I have my own campaign setting I use on the Real D&D boards here and in in-person games. It doesn't have many new rules and uses D&D gods(I was too lazy to invent a large pantheon of new gods) but it does have a long history which I've yet to completely detail. I get the idea that this is the board to get advice on it, but I'd like to make sure first. Thanks.:) |

| Xychotic12-29-03, 10:18 PM | Nevermind. |
| Fallen Star01-15-04, 02:19 AM | Im sorry if this is a lame question, but i dont spend alot of time surfing around boards. I heard some of you talking about "files" and "PDFs" and "links" . Does this mean I can upload my homebrew PDF onto wizards and have them host it? They used to have fan-created files prior to 3rd ed. If they dont (which wouldnt suprise me) do you know of any other sites that do? I would love to see my setting published- not for the money, just cuz I think its a cool setting. |
| nate06029303-20-04, 10:08 PM | I've never played d&d and dont plan to. but I like making new worlds and the like. Can I post these worlds here |

| darkness_glow06-16-04, 12:41 AM | go to my rpg |
| Quetzi the Conquistador06-16-04, 06:31 AM | Darkness Glow, did you even read this thread? This is a forum for homebrew settings, not for some sort of game. I believe there is a forum for games, your thread will either get moved there or you would do well to seek it out. |
| Arcuna06-27-04, 11:40 PM | I have not posted about my world Enorm (a link to it is in my sig) for quite a while, and I have done a lot of updating since then. So my question is this: Should I create a new thread, so as not to gravedig, or should I use the same one? Thanks in advance! |
| His Majesty06-28-04, 08:52 AM | I don't think that there is, or should be, any standard way of dealing with this issue. There is nothing fundamentaly wrong with resurrecting a dead thread, but it generaly shouldn't be done, because apparently people aren't interested in it enough to post. Since you say that you have new information to add, which will renew the interest in the thread, you can use it again. You should ask yourself, however, which method will be better for the organisation of your thread. A campaign world is a pretty complex thing, and I think that a second draft is easier to handle in a new thread, where the information is conveniently seperated and accessible. Additionaly, a short thread is less intimidating than a long one - I can hardly see anyone jumping into the Legends of Hyerune or Walmart: Post-Apocalypse threads without (at least) a week of lurking and reading, while joining a one-page thread is much easier. On the other hand, the old thread might contain discussions that can be useful for the further development of your world, and is a kind of documentation of the work you've done so far. Just decide which method suits you better. |
| His Majesty06-28-04, 08:58 AM | Originally posted by T.J. Storn No offence to anyone, but we all have to expect the pros and cons of all things in order to make the necessary compromises to not only keep the people flowing in, but also will in able you to keep your world of RPing your own and still flow as smooth as you need. Could you rephrase that? I don't really understand what you're trying to say. Try using shorter sentances. |
| Rhineglade08-12-04, 10:59 AM | Hey, does anyone know if it is possible to link to something within your OWN thread? I was trying to create a more comprehensive index on the first page of my homebrew thread and I wanted to allow the reader to select any entry and click on it to go straight to that part of thread. I tried using the standard HTML code but that didn't seem to work. Are you even able to do that on this board? Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks. |
| His Majesty08-12-04, 11:56 AM | It is possible. Use this formula: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?postid=[post number]#post[post number] The post number is a 7-digit number. It can be discovered by hovering over the edit or quote button in the bottom right of every post with your mouse - the target link will appear on your status bar, and all you need to do is copy the number in the end of the link. (I'm assuming that you're using IE - I don't really know how to work with other browsers). I suggest that you copy it to a piece of paper. Otherwise you could right-click the button, then click on "Copy Shortcut", and paste it somewhere, then choose only the post number and copy-paste it. After you've got the number, replace the [post number] in the formula above with it. The post number of the second post on your thread, for example, is 2551812. Thus the link would be as following: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?postid=2551812#post255181 2 Or in link form: Physical Layout (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?postid=2551812#post255181 2) |
| Rhineglade08-12-04, 04:31 PM | Thanks a lot your Majesty! That was the ticket. You are now an unofficial Wiz-O! ;) |
| His Majesty08-12-04, 04:45 PM | Well, I might not be a Wiz_O, but I'm seriously trying to contibute to the Homebrew Board. I think I'm going to postpone my works for The Magicant, The Heartstone and put some more work into a FAQ for the Homebrew board. Like most of the thing I do thatdon't have strict deadlines (and some that do), it's been lying around for months. The thing I wrote above is certainly going to be in there. |
| His Majesty09-03-04, 09:43 AM | Because of the board upgrades, using the old method for post-specific link creation is somewhat problematic - it still works, but I believe that it displays a "You're leaving wizards' " screen, and I think it takes more time to generate the page with this link. Anyway, this new method, using thread tags, is much more elegant. To create post-specific links, use the following formula: {thread=&p=[post number]}Title{/thread} (Replace {} with []) The post number can be discovered by hovering over the edit or quote button in the bottom right of every post with your mouse - the target link will appear on your status bar, and all you need to do is copy the number in the end of the link. (I'm assuming that you're using IE - I don't really know how to work with other browsers). I suggest that you copy it to a piece of paper. Otherwise you could right-click the button, then click on "Copy Shortcut", and paste it somewhere, then choose only the post number and copy-paste it. The thread number can be found in the same way, by hovering over the thread title in the forum's main page instead of the edit/quote button. After you've got the numbers, replace the [post number] and [thread number] in the formula above with them. The post number of the second post on Rhineglade's thread, for example, is 2551812. His thread number is 180587. The title is Physical Layout. Thus the link would be as following: {thread=180587&p=2551812}Physical Layout{/thread} After bracket replacement: [thread=180587&p=2551812]Physical Layout |
| WotC_Mel09-03-04, 02:23 PM | If it would be helpful to be allowed to upload a pdf or a doc file to this forum, let me or the WizO in charge know and we can probably arrange that. |
| His Majesty09-04-04, 11:10 AM | Um, I think that would be helpful, but I haven't considered it ever before. If someone wants to do so, does he have to talk to you on a case-by-case basis, or are you asking everybody here whether we want this to be an option for anyone on this board? |
| Duskey12-09-04, 10:17 PM | Okay, I'm at a loss here. Now if I wanted the creation story to my homebrew campaign setting evaluated...where whould I do that? Here or the "Once upon a time" thread? |

| Duskey12-10-04, 11:49 AM | Then again it IS just a tiny bit of information about my world so until I can gather more (recent history, map etc.) I might just have to...wait!?!?!?! |
| 77IM12-10-04, 01:28 PM | Then again it IS just a tiny bit of information about my world so until I can gather more (recent history, map etc.) I might just have to...wait!?!?!?! Don't wait! This board is the Campaign Workshop so works-in-progress are more than welcome. As you come up with more information, add it to the thread, building your world. It seems that for some reason a lot of people are under the impression that a campaign setting has to be "done" before it should be posted. In fact the opposite is true -- there have been many good settings that started with a single post, while a setting that is "done" is in many ways less fun to read. Eberron began as a one-page submission about tone and style, all the rest came later. Besides, are settings ever really completed? They're still coming up with new material for FR after all these years... -- 77IM |
| Duskey12-11-04, 01:49 AM | True...ah, I'll start posting once I get a decent map done, anyone got any ideas where to draw one, besides paint? I make a rough sketch in excel, but it's crappy. |
| lordvoldemorten12-11-04, 03:21 AM | I'd like to know some good map-drawing programs too actually... I usually make them pen-and-pencil, but it doesn't lead to the best of maps. I'm looking forward to see your world posted Duskey. Lord Voldemorten |
| Rhineglade02-04-05, 03:03 PM | Confusious says: One's signature tag should not be longer than your posted comment. |
| Delvesdeep03-16-05, 12:26 AM | I'm curious. Is there any other method of placing a map on your thread other than having the map on a web page? Delvesdeep:b: |
| dndgameupdate103-16-05, 06:58 AM | Is this the appropriate forum to place links to audio recordings of an ongoing homebrew world AD&D game? If so, great! If not, then where? Someone might listen to the game and have a great idea about DMing or about describing scenes, maybe some way of me being a better DM. And if I am one thing, I am always trying to be a better DM. |
| Ayers03-16-05, 10:30 AM | I think you're allowed to post them here, but I'm not entirely sure what the policy to linking other sites is. Best you probably take a quick glance through the CoC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=community/coc), just in case. |
| dndgameupdate103-16-05, 05:33 PM | I think you're allowed to post them here, but I'm not entirely sure what the policy to linking other sites is. Best you probably take a quick glance through the CoC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=community/coc), just in case. Thanks, I checked out the CoC plage and it doesn't say anything about posting links to actual recordings of table top gaming. I would say in our games we don't have any kind of racial hatred (except maybe the fantasy dwarf/elf thing) or any kind of sexual situations. There is adult language though, like the occasional curse word. I would say the game audio would be rated 'R'. |
| SiuiS09-13-05, 12:52 AM | It seems to me, from reading maybe the first quarter of this thread (after that, it semed to deal less with my own question...Ill re-read the whole thing at a later date) that... Well, it would be easier if I posted my question first, methinks, so. What format, or layout, exactly, would work best for posting anything on this particular board for help? It seems more, however, that the answer is;Dont. It would be better to post each seperate part under the appropriate forum, then link there. Descriptions of races, and why they are different, would go into the Races forum, classes, spells, monster, same thing. And write out the overview, how it all holds together, and any 'flavor text' if you will, here? Is this correct, or am I missing the point? I will admit, Im sick at the moment, to the point of delirium. So if I mince words, or totally disregard something obvious, I appologise, but this seems to be the point, aye? |
| Ecthelion of the Fountain09-28-05, 09:32 PM | Kind of a silly question, but just how many Final Fantasy posts are we going to have on this forum at one time anyway? I always thought that this particular forum was for people wanting to post their "Original" ideas for Homebrew Campaigns. Aren't campaigns borrowed from other people's ideas such as those based on FF7 (or any video game for that matter), Magic: The Gathering, Hecatomb, Midkemia, Spelljammer etc. supposed to go under that specific forum under the d20 site? Am I wrong? It certainly seems this site gets overinnudated with multiple posts that push more appropriate posts to the foreground. Any comments? |
| Nester Vagabond10-06-05, 02:09 PM | I've been creating my own campaign worlds for about ten years now, and it remains a daunting task to continually create interesting and innovative new directions to take the game. What sources (besides your standard fiction and fantasy novels) do some of you experienced types use to keep the spice in the game? I'm not trying to rewrite the game, just inject some more color and culture. |

| DMing11-01-05, 08:44 PM | how do i start a campaign here? |
| Ayers11-01-05, 09:06 PM | how do i start a campaign here? You don't start a campaign in this section, but there are interactive play-by-post sections you can start a campaign in. This place is just to get help and advice in setting up your own campaigns, and making your own worlds. |
| RedWizard01-04-06, 02:11 PM | My question, I created my own setting for my campaign though the work goes on. The campaign I run is for 1st edition and I use the pantheons (some at least) from Deities and Demi-Gods as I am happy with the cultural mix they represent and I have never been a huge fan of one pantheon for multiple civilizations. I also make extensive use of the old modules, though I substitute cities, countries and important NPCs to suit my own world. The beauty of using 1st edition is that the modules generally gave only the list of encounters and the backstory was left for the DM to provide. In other words, I make use of the maps and encounters given to supplement the grander plots of my own world. I also have not seen fit to do any overhauling of existent rules for 1st edition with the exception of eliminating level restrictions for demi-humans. So does this still count as homebrew if I am using such existent elements? |
| RedWizard01-04-06, 02:13 PM | Another question, How do I attach maps to my posts here as I have seen others do. I do not yet have a website for my world. |
| Elf_Jedi05-14-06, 07:28 PM | I've always sort of wonder, how does a thread become a "hot thread"? Is it by posts or views or a combination of the two? Just wondering... |
| Ganaroth_Les01-25-07, 12:24 AM | Question: I'm currently posting a campaign journal kind of thing, detailing, from one of the character's points of view, the event currently taking place in the campaign, which is set in an original homebrew world. Is this the board for such a thing? I looked at others, especially the Character Development and D&D General boards... but this seemed to fit best, at least in my mind. If I'm wrong, however, I'd appreciate knowing. |
| Seraphine_Harmonium01-31-07, 07:16 PM | Another question, How do I attach maps to my posts here as I have seen others do. I do not yet have a website for my world. I've always sort of wonder, how does a thread become a "hot thread"? Is it by posts or views or a combination of the two? Just wondering... I know these! I posted a map by having it first uploaded to the internet. Then you can place image [img] tags around the url of the image and it should appear. A thread becomes hot when it receives at least 25 replies or 150 views. |
| Elf_Jedi03-25-07, 12:51 AM | Hmm i can seem to find one of my old threads, not even in the archives. Have these boards gotten a good cleaning out as of late? |
| Elf_Jedi04-06-07, 11:39 AM | Nevermind...I was just following a bad link. |
| Erilev04-27-07, 02:58 PM | I am just wondering, even if I don't play D&D, but wish to create a world for my writing, would this be a good place to plost. Or should I post in the Once upion a time forum? |
| LostMage04-28-07, 03:51 PM | Is it just me, or are old threads that were archived reappearing, and threads that have replies being archived? I saw the commoner campaign thread in the archive, and some threads I saw in the archives from a few months ago back here. |
| LostMage05-08-07, 09:26 PM | OK, I've been looking at this thread, one of the posters said that worlds that were 'under construction' were the most fun to work on. I'm thinking of posting what I have of my world, is there a good format for doing this? That is to say, how would you reccomend orginzing the details and concepts of a world into a post? |
| mikeg10-08-07, 07:22 PM | While I enjoy reading about original campaign settings on this forum, I can't seem to find many examples of homebrew modules or dungeons here. Is this forum appropriate for such small-scale examples? Or is there a better forum? I've seen some examples of cool puzzles/traps etc. and then cool examples of an entire world, but does anyone else miss cool homebrew MODULES? Something with a short backstory (or not even that) and actual encounters? |
