Hey all:

I'm looking for an easy way to design towns/hamlets/villages quick.

When you have to whip up a community quickly, where do you get the maps?

Also, I'd like a list of establishments that one would find in each size of community. For example, would you find a blacksmith in a village, but not a thorp? What do you guys use?

Just wondering how my fellow DMs do it.

A village/hamlet/cute town must have....

1 Shady tavern with plenty of ploothooks.

1 Dungeon/cavern/crypt/tomb nearby for easy-access-adventuring. (You can always reuse a dungeon, makes it more believable anyhow.

Limited resources thus preventing our heroes from getting what they want.

1-3 Named NPC/s later discovered to be irreplaceably important to DM's storyline.

50-800Unnamed commoners of no importance.

1 outfitter.

1 certain doom aproaching that only the PC's can stop.

In reality, everything about your town is up to you. And the lack of things can be as interesting as the abundance. EX: NO TAVERN IN A LITTLE TOWN! I KNOW! DM SACRILAGE!

Some nice tools there die.

Here's another I found, though you will probably want to download a pdf printer for better functionality.

And a pdf printer that works for me...
