I'm thinking about running a scenario that involves the pc's who are at war and their first mission will be to re-take a strategic point in a valley that is a statue of one of the great kings of the past. This is an all dwarf party and they are all lvl 6 in various classes. I'm looking for some ideas on how to run an assault on them to stretch them thin over maybe 3-4 days of fighting with little rest in between, and a reward that would be fitting such as a morale bonus or something for taking back not only respect for having the statue back with its rightful owners but also a key point of attack in the war, this war is against Orcs.

thanks for any ideas/help.

Well, you could easily justify a +2 morale bonus to everyone in the army (or at least those in the battle at hand), sort of like the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima.

As for the PCs themselves, I could easily see this translating into commendations, which leads to promotions, which leads to more money, responsibility, and more dangerous missions for the army. Assuming you're planning on keeping them in said army, of course :-D

Edit: If you're deadset on making the PCs run for 3-4 days with little to no rest (which I'd like to point out could be disastrous, as spellcasters can't replenish spells and fatigue penalties'd kick in eventually), I'd give them things in the environment to use to their advantage. Trees can be cut down to block routes/slow progress, and boulders can be rolled down hills to take out entire squads of enemies. Such things are still in the flavor of combat, but definitely less taxing on the PCs' resources.

Making sense of re-ocurring orc attacks it is probably the most difficult things. There needs to be a reason that the orcs just don't flood down the valley en masse and retake the shrine, or the dwarves for that matter.

If you haven't already described the geography surrounding the shrine, make it diffiult to get to, physically. A deep wide fast moving river is probably the easiest. Or an island in the middle of a fast deep wide river.

Two there has to be a reason that small group of orcs and dwarves is preferable to a large group. I suggest siege equipment. Catapults and ballista. Something that would be hugley detrimental to a large army but easily overcome by a small group. The site itself has no structres so the orcs don't want to bring in their own siege equipment for fear of damaging the statue. Both orcs and dwarves feel that the best way to capture and hold the shrine is through small units.

With that the PC's can be safely (from a story point a view) assaaulted time and time again by groups of orcs attempting to retake the shrine. The worst attacks come at night. Every1d4 hours a squad of orcs (6 -12) backed by a low level adpet maybe, makes their way across the river to retake the shrine. During the day orc vision is impaired. Assaults are reduced to 2d4-1 hours but will fire ranged weapons from the opposite shore, usually heavy crossbows. Harrassing the party all throiught the day.

On the final night go ape****. have dwarf re-inforcements come during the day (maybe a d8 of 1st level dwarf warriors (light crossbows and axes) and a 3rd level cleric. The party can finally get a full 8 hours rest, They'll need it for the night.

At night go all out. 50 - 100 orcs or more will attempt to retake the statue. they'll attempt to cross the river with crudely made rafts and boats while crossbowmen provide cover from the opposite shore.

The Dwarves are awarded a Quarry in the Valley by the Local Baron...Dwarves need Jobs after the War, Good to have folks willing to fight for it...Well managed, probably worth a thousand a month (1,000 stonecutters...).

Depending upon the significance of that statue, the PCs could even be rewarded with nobility status. This can be used to make whole new plots as the PCs gain distant lands that have been claimed by enemies (like more orcs :P)

Yeah I would also allow them to make simple traps and such and discribe there effects to the players, allow them to takeout portions of the attack. Pit traps with sharped sticks for spikes etc.
