I am a DM of a dragonlance world. And I have a problem:
In my party there is a sorcerer that loves illusionmagic and he all so completed a test (the test of high sorcery, to gain more powers and he succeed). But now he wants to do research on the shadow plane, for the simple reason, he wants to get pure illusion magic out of the shadow plane to use the on his enemys and experiments. I have told him that this will be very difficult and will take a lot of time.
But the problem is:

A) I want to link a campaign on this research on the illusionmagic.
Can someone of you guys give some idea for a good story?

B) If he succeed after lang time research, what new feats, ability's and skills can I give him. I want them to be extra ordinair, but I cant think of none.
some ideas pleas?

alread thanks for your help:)

Perhaps you could look at the Forgotten Realms Shadow Weave. You might be able to get some good ideas from there, just modify it for illusion and your world. You can base the rest of your campaign around this probably, with evil shadow mages and misuse of shadow powers and new monsters created by shadow forces, etc.

Can you help me a little with that, pleas ? Because I don't know any thing of Forgotten Realms Shadow Weave and I don't have any rule book of forgotten realms.

I actually don't have it with me either. I borrowed it from the library and have since returned it, but the concept of the Shadow Weave is this. Mystra, Goddess of Magic, created the Weave, which was essentially the conduit of magic. It is what mortals access magic through, arcane or divine. Dispel Magic, for example, smooths the Weave to its regular state, Antimagic field forces magical energies to flow around and not through a certain area in the Weave. However, Shar, Goddess of Shadow, created her own Weave - the Shadow Weave. It is slightly different than the Weave, as it makes some schools better and others worse. It even has its own prestige class, the Shadow Adept. I know that I haven't really described it sufficiently, but again, I don't have the books with me. I'm sorry that I did a bad job of it. However, I suggest that somebody with a Forgotten Realms campaign explains this, or that you go to the Forgotten Realms board.

thanks for your answer :) but on last question what would be a good story to link my sorcerer (out dragonlance) to the shadow Weave of forgotten realms.
because I find this shadow Weave very intresting.

I do have the book in question but I am at work right now so can't look anything up. What I can remember about the Shadow Weave is that once you take on the Shadow Magic, you can never go back to the regular Weave. You also start to take special feats such as Pernicious Magic and Tenacious Magic and Insidious Magic.

Magic cast from the Shadow Weave is more difficult to dispel or counter and is treated as +1 caster level. Users of the Shadow Weave however are also penalized when trying to dispel or counter spells cast from the normal Weave. The Shadow Weave is also more potent when dealing with spells from the School of Illusion and the School of Necromancy. It is considered to be an overall "evil" form of magic as Shar is an evil goddess of night but you can adjust this if needed.

A good story might be something along the lines of...
-Attempt to create a new school of magic ends up in creation of the Shadow Weave
-Powerful beings from the Plane of Shadow speak in fear of a mighty lich who uses the power of the Shadow Weave; only another attuned to the Shadow Weave can stop him
-Dark Necromancers seek to enhance their spells with the Shadow Weave, the only way to stop them is to discover it first

I haven't read the Dragonlance Campaign Setting, but I think these would work with just about any world (unless it has some kind of special limitation, such as no Necromancy allowed)

thanks for the answers :)
there are Necromancers in Dragonlance.
But Rhineglade can you tell me more of the feats such as Pernicious Magic and Tenacious Magic and Insidious Magic.

Maybe uncontrolled shadow magic and monsters are leaking on to the material as a result of a brilliant research project gone horribly wrong.

The native powers of the plane of shadow might not like mortals peering into their realm. Alternativly they might see this as an opportunity to ensnare naive new tallent into their dastardly planes.

My favorite monster for this kind of thing is the night walker.
