Alright, here is the sit-rep.

Using the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, my fellow PC's and I have decided to control the world through financial means. We immediately noticed the lack of a sea route from the Sea of Swords to the Sea of Fallen Stars. To fix this prolem, we decided to make a canal in two phases.

Phase 1: A canal connecting the eastern branch of the River Esmel to Deepwash, a 52.5 mile long canal.

Phase 2: A canal connecting Deepwash and the Lake of the Long Arm, a 60 mile canal.

To raise funding, we are in the process of establishing a business. Once the business is established and well respected, we will begin attempting to interest investors. The targeted investors are major commodity manufactures located in Athkatla-Amn, Esmeltaren-Amn, Surkh-The Shining Plains, Nimpeth-Hlondeth, and Ormpetarr-Sespeth for funding for phase one.

We decided to that it would be best to use slave labor from the Shining Plains due to the close proximity to the job site of Phase 1 and Phase 2. The canal project is simply the first of many construction projects we plan on undertaking, so buying the slaves now will save us money in the long run. The only problem is we can't find a price for slaves or slave labor in any of the books. We have looked in Arms and Equipment and DMG 3.5 and couldn't find anything. If you would like to point us in the right direction, or have any suggestions we would appreciate it.

Simple answer: there aren't any; at least, none that are official (not even BoVD, I think). There've been a couple of formulae drafted up by homebrewers, though: search for "slave cost" on this board and the Mature one.

THe neogi formula was challenge rating squared X 100 gp. for a normal member of a species with add ons for skilled workers?dandadventure, com had a dm site with a slave list as well.

I actually found it in Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. 50-100 gp each if anyone is wondering. Thanks for your help.

112.5 miles of canal...

CANAL
Dirt Trench(20' deep, 50' wide, 112.5 miles long) Base Cost:5,940,000gp, time:594,000 working-days
Stone Facing(2' thick fitted granite, 475,200,000 cubic ft) Base Cost (including Quarry):475,200,000gp + (475,200,000gp*0.1/mile from quarry source), Time:600,000 work days to fit stone

Supporting Quarry Requirements
Quarry Size: 50,000 Quarry workers
Quarry Time: 4.8 Years

QUARRYING & MINING
ALL MINING HAS A MINIMUM COST OF ONE OUNCE OF GOLD PER TON OF ROCK. THIS IS USEFUL BECAUSE IT PUTS A STANDARD VALUE ON BASIC QUARRYSTONE AND SETS A MINIMUM PERCENTAGE ON THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF A VALUABLE MINERAL PRESENT FOR MINING.

MINE TYPE..........................MONTHLY OUTPUT.....................WORKERS...... ..............BASIC COST
GRANITE QUARRY...............76 TON (1000 CUBIC FT)............5 LABOURERS.................76 OZ. GOLD

GRANITE QUARRY(CATEGORY: SMALL, MEDIUMx2, LARGEx3, HUGEx4)
EXTRACTION COST/TON..........................312.5CP
MONTHLY SUPPLY.................................. .76 TONS
WORKERS................................. ..............5
MONTHLY WORKER WAGE...........................200CP
GRANITE@QUARRY (1 TON).........................350CP
TOTAL QUARRY INCOME.............................2,850 CP

You will need to establish towns at each canal end to provide commercial support for the construction of the Canals. A Small Fortified Barracks at every LOCH (About 10), A Paved road down both sides so triple the Stone facing cost and labour-time. You need Barons loyal to the idea of free trade to control each city...

Probably around 50,000 workers to get it done in a 10 year window (at a cost of one billion gold pieces), all of whom need support and protection.

This sounds boring. Why, might I ask? And wouldn't the wizards of Thay or someone be able to come in and just take things over from you? Heck, the dragons are rich enough. One dragon could theoretically destroy a country by flooding it with gold.

Actually Delfedd I think that the threat of Thayan takeover or dragon involvement is what makes projects like this interesting. It's a sort of conflict that the pcs have initiated that keeps the blood flowing in a campaign sometimes, in my opinion.

Here's a bit of a chart I'm taking from the Conan rpg, not necessarily to scale but it might help give some ideas.

slave, female, beautiful - 60gp
slave, female, common - 30 gp
slave, female, highborn, educated, beautiful - 150 gp
slave, male, rebellious, savage - 5 gp
slave, male, workshy criminal - 10 gp
slave, male, hardworking and submissive - 15 gp

The Dragon will probably have it invested in vinyards that brings in 500gp/acre after costs. After all, why settle for rich when you can be richer.

This "Build a Canal" thing would have to be run with a war in mind. Not every one wants ships to be able to sail from Waterdeep to The Sea of Stars...

Holy Crap. Thanks Yellowdingo for doing that. I was working on putting together a business plan and proposal to present to potential investors as the DM said the more effort we put into it the easier he'll make it to get funding.

I've already begun to put together a composition book with all this information in it, I'll just add this in and update.

Thanks again. :D

EDIT: Where did you find that information yellowdingo? That way I can cite sources when my DM's mouth drops and asks where I found it.
