So, I thought, what if there was a material plane heavily influenced by spirits? Nature spirits, fire spirits, water spirits, hatred spirits, death spirits, and all of the other species affected by some sort of primal spirit.

If you can help come up with stats for somethings (well, a lot of things.) it would be really nice. If anything comes of this, anyone can use this campaign setting. if you want.

So, the overarching god of nature is the Nature Spirit. Anything living in a forest is considered under the Nature Spirit's care. It hunts down those who have defiled the forest ad nature. The Nature Spirit disapproves of metal and its followers cannot use metal weapons or armor. The nature Spirit's Follower are druids. The Nature Spirit is by no means a benevolent figure. Just like nature, the nature spirit can be a vicious creature intent on saving its "young" or surviving. The Nature Spirit fully supports procreation and birth, and is said to aid those mothers who have conceived in the forest. Its followers are always N, NG, NE, CN, or LN.

Can anyone think of the Domains that have a tie to nature?

I'll post more ideas later.

Can anyone think of the right domains for this thing? I might twist the Fleet Runner of Elhonna prestige class to my liking.

I ran a low tech setting a while back with no metal items and nature spirits(small world ;) ). I just used elementals to represent spirits, and made any metal items the equivalent of +1 items. They were around, just really rare. Nature domains could be animal, plant, earth, water, sun, maybe healing.

I didn't mean there are only nature spirits. There are also sprits of fire who can inhabit weapons as well. I'll get to them. And the spirits are supposed to be really common. As in a five year old is playing in the stream and there is a 50/50 chance a tiny river spirit might float by. Probably even better of a chance.

Sounds like you're discussing Animism from Deities and Demigods,There's also some sort of spirit shaman in complete divine. You could glance thru these two books to clarify your thinking?RANDOM THOUGHT.

I agree with the person directly above me. It seems like your making a Shamanistic world. For ideas I recomend reading the chronicles of ancient darkness series by michelle paver and geoff taylor (the auther is weird, my copies only list michelle but amazon.com sais otherwise) and doing some research on the inuit and the russian/siberian natives.

Did it ever occur to you I might not own those books? I don't. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll see if one of my friends has it.

EDIT: For this world think Kamigawa. (IT's an MTG set.) There are lots of spirits, sometimes people worship them, sometimes they battle them, sometimes they are attacked by them and they are rather common.

I'm wondering how to word some sort of Feat or spell. Here's the gist of it: If a person who lives in a city or outside of a forest, and is born there, the Nature Spirit may bless him with a sapling spirit guide. The sapling would grow in the Nature Spirit's sacred grove and if a character was faced with a tough choice or difficult decision, such as whether to continue adventuring or to stay with his lover in the city, if the better choice was to stay in the city, he may find a small sapling or vine entwined around his lovers locket, signifying to stay in the city. Less abstractly, if he was trying to pick a lock, he may see some tumblers with vines around them that look like his spirit guide, or if he has to choose a path, the guide might be found sprouting up from underneath the bricks. Should it be a skill? Also, if the character dies, the Sapling does to, and if he is raised, so is the Sapling. If the Sapling is killed in the grove, he would lose the spirit guide.

If it seems like I am uncoordinated, its because I am with this.

EDIT2: I meant to say that if his parents lived outside of the forest and he was born in the forest. Sorry if it was confusing.

In japanese mythology spiritfolk were usually born from a stand of bamboo.I think the Oriental Adventures book alllows Spiritfolk to come from a grove of trees,a stand of bamboo or a small pond. The only drawback to a spiritfolk PC in Oriental Adventures is that you can't travel too far from your birthplace and must visit it to replenish your powers. This would be similar to a Greco-Roman dryad or hamadryad not being able to leave her oak tree?

You are right it can be any undeveloped wilderness. But, the Nature Spirit pays closest attention to the forest, and you can only get a sapling spirit guide by being born in the forest.

I forgot to say, that though spirits are prevalent in this world (can anyone think of a name?), it is not oriental like Kamigawa. That does seem like a good idea. Damn not having tons of supplements.:D

You can buy a lot of supplements as PDF. downloads at rpganow.com.Be sure and back them up to disk, wouldn't want your brother to delete a file you paid good money for.;) You can get some pretty good 2 fer 1 deals at amazon.com as well?In the past when we switched from one Edition to another there was a sharp drop in price of all the previous edition books, even those books it was going to take a year or two to translate into the new format.RANDOM THOUGHTS.

Thank you for that suggestion, but I am really strapped for cash. It should be kept to core book material only, but you can add that if you want to. And did you read that poop thread? otherwise you must be stalking me.

Here is a useful link: http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm

SO... SRD is what I like to call "Free" and is the Core. A lot of of the Deities and Demigods material is in there. Seriously, the mechanics Deities are core, trust me. I think it is odd that you think otherwise, but hey, I spend a lot of time reading the mechanics and am a Core fanatic. (I :inlove: x ∞ the Core.)

My suggestion is for really large spirits, like a Mountain spirit or the ruling spirit over the whole forest calculate the size of the area it rules and compare against Divine realms to gauge the power of the being and create it as a deity of that power, perhaps substituting Elemental instead of outsider for the first 20 HD.

Here is a link straight to Divine Realms for your ease of Reference:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineRanksAndPowers.htm#godlyRealm

If you check the DMG (also know as the Dungeon Master's Guide, or Core book 2) You'll find guideline and mechanics for describing your own custom cosmology but here is another link

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/planes.htm

using jargon from that page a spirit realm where the spirits actually live would be

Coexistent with the Material Plane
Divinely Morphic (so use the outer planes Divine realms size instead of the material)

Probably normal Time or Timeless depending on what you want
Probably Normal Gravity

and like the Ethereal being in the spirit realm can see into the Material realm.

For really small spirits (power over an area less that 100ft radius) they only have 0 divine ranks or no divine ranks elementals

Thank you. I will look over the links. As soon as my computer is defragmented so I can load the pages withput it crashing. Your suggestions were excellent. And the spirits should be very wierd looking, or very normal looking.

Yes I read the poop threadSPELLJAMMER.ORG Has adaptions of 2 Ed spell jammer material...dandadventure.com a free site for non-official d+d material....MAZTICA located in the download section of this site, hundreds of pages on an Aztec based campaign world,2ED,free.nice artworkI myself never did this, but some groups chip in a dollar each time they play so the DM can buy more Books/minatures with the understanding that the stuff stays with the DM if the player moves on.For years I bought all the Books/dice/minatures/graph paper Etc.After about 2 years one player bought a players handbook and another purchased a dwarf figure, still I payed for about 99% of what was our hobby.Think it over. I would probaly have spirits be the motivating force for spells, with an Indian Medicine Bag being the spell focus?Perhaps incude taboos at each level to justify the spirits giving you more power, sort of like the Wu-Jen?RANDOM THOUGHTS.

All very good points. I am so ashamed that thread was made. I think that they should be the guiding force for divine spells, maybe minor spirits assisting with some spells,

How about for clerics you have each type of spirit possess one domain? So a cleric who makes offerings to a fire spirit and a Tree spirit has the Fire and Plant domains?
What if domains change on a daily/weekly basis, and to swap a domain out you need to find a spirit and make an appropriate offering?

What if instead of a familiar Wizards and Sorcerers get a Small/Tiny elemental as their familiar?

There should be a bunck of spells like Charm person and Summon that work only for spirits. You might also have strong spirits able to possess people, and some adventures might revolve around evil spirits posessing people.

Lastly, take a look at the DMG2's Companion spirits rules for inviting a spirit to watch over the party.

Hope these help.

For primal earth and air spirits, use elementals.

For the spirits of plants and animals, use fey and animals of legend.

For death spirits, use the stats of incorporeal undead and describe them differently.

If you don't want to have "gods" in the traditional sense, either ban the cleric class (and have divine casters all be druids), or say that a cleric can have any two domains and any alignment he wants, as he is calling on countless spirits for power instead of one big god.
