Hi every one, I have been wondering how to do a wild west flavored setting, but i just cant seem to find sutible reference material. I was thinking of geting a copy of spell slinger from fantasy flight games, but in the mean time all i got is the main core books. Now i already got the setting of the world mapped out in my head, what i am really looking for is a good reference for wild west era weapons and thinking up some sutible class modifications and the like.
I would really appreciate any help on this.

back in the early to mid 80's there was a game called BOOTHILL if you can find it it was a wild west type of d&d
they only made a couple dungeons for it i think was a bit of a flop

D20 past has some notes on "primitive"weapons that existed before modern era?Mainly you want to determine whether technology or magic is going to underlie your campaign.Consider creating a Rangers organisation similar to the texas rangers or kings Gunslingers.Remember to pay attention to slang?Which races are going to play the role of indians?I suggest scaled-down versions of the sylvan centaurs,a sort of pony centaur if you will.RANDOM THOUGHTS

Let's see... The trickiest thing is the guns, I suspect. Well, Dragon Magazine issue #60 has an article on early firearms, and I think there have been magazines since that contained the same. Let your players know the joy of masterwork rifles with +2 bullets!

Guns are easy. For guns, make the following changes to your PH:
Replace "light crossbow" with "gun"
Replace "heavy crossbow" with "rifle"
Replace "hand crossbow" with "pistol"
Replace "bolt" with "bullet"

You now have guns in D&D.

I never played it, I have read through it. I suggest to the OP that he pick it up.

Doing everything from scratch is going to be a lot of work.

thanks for the imput guys but i think guns need to be a little more deadlier than a crossbow and the like here is what i was thinking

hold out pistol 2d4 x3
light pistol 2d6 x3
heavy pistol 2d8 x3
carbine 2d8 x3
long rifle (sniper rifle) 4d6 x4
Scatter gun 3d6/2d6* or 2d10* x3
* second range incrament
* Slolid slug round

Let me now if you think these are two powerful

Also i was thinking of just making them simple and martial weapons due the common avliability of the weapons in my setting.

There's a tendancy to overpower guns.I would focus on the cultural details of the campaign.Deciding on whether the players start in the fantasy version of Tombstone,Arizona of San Fransico,California might be important.Deciding what race will be the indians might be crucial. You might want to add Yuan-ti as a fantasy version of the chineese tong? Will there be non-human PCs?Is there a gold rush happening? Are there wagon trains? Are there stage coaches? Is there something like the American Civil War?RANDOM THOUGHTS

I would say yes. Definitely. Your light pistol is shooting greatswords. But I state my opinion under the assumption that you are trying to balance out these guns against standard D&D weapons.

However, the true test of whether or not they are "too powerful" depends on the assumptions surrounding your campaign. What type of proficiencies do they require? How long do they take to reload? Compared to other weapons, how common are they? Who has them? How much does your campaign setting differ from a traditional D&D setting (iow, do cowboys wield magic and do dragons tie princesses to the railroad tracks)? How common are they compared to standard issue D&D weapons? What level of technology are you looking at. How expensive will guns and ammo be? How available are they?

If your campaign assumes that fast, and very deadly, ranged combat is a fact of life, they may not be overpowered. But those assumptions should manifest in every aspect of your game world. I pity the party that goes up against a kobold warband armed with with sniper rifles.

Whatever you do, don't try to create accurate representations of RL guns in your campaign. You won't find a consensus. Every gun thread that has tried eventually went up into flames. Instead, settle on stats that make for the best combination of playablity and enjoyment of the game.

You might want to check out a 3rd-party d20 game called Sidewinder. I haven't read it myself, but it got very good reviews when it came out. There are two versions: the original Sidewinder: Wild West Adventure (http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=product&productid=118295) (which I think is OOP now), and Sidewinder: Recoiled (http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=product&productid=118994), which is an adaptation to d20 Modern rules.

If you're talking about Western-flavored D&D, I have a PDF called "Cowboys & Dragons", downloaded from the Internet some years ago, which might interest you. If you want a copy, give me your email address and I'll send it to you.

There was another thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=801152) on this topic a few weeks ago, btw.

Have you seen Firefly? That's a great example of mashing up flavors in a setting to get a varied and different result. I think Eberron, in some regions, is perfectly capable of conveying a Wild West feel without any necessity for guns.

Wands and swords get the point across just as well, but I can understand how they change the feel. D20 Modern guns work great, they tend to force massive damage saves, but D&D characters are so tough that mundane weapons tend not to be scary enough. You could implement D20 Modern-like massive damage rules without too many problems (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/adventuring/massaveDamageThresholdsAndResults.htm#al ternativeThresholdLevels), but this will alter the flow of combat significantly. Fighters are perfectly capable of matching the damage output of wizards, especially when the threshold is so low, but this means that nearly anyone can be felled by an unlucky roll.

I use the same gun stats from my Mario D20 project for D&D. Their usage depends on the setting, but you tend to find them in dense gnomish communities.

Started reading the Sidewinder and there is alot of great information it there.

Right now i started working on the terrortories that make up my setting

the Country of Amerigo is made up of 7 terrortories

Arizana:
Small in comparison to the terrortories of Brag and Santerina, Arizana makes up for this fact with its rich deposits of gold and silver. Another reason for it prominence is it boasts the countries largest Arcane College, The Tower in the city of Arcana.
It has minor influence with the rail barons due it being the only usable area between Brag And Santerina.
The poulation is mainly composed of Humans, Sylvan, and several mining camps of dwarves.

Well here is the first territory tell me what you guys think.

Thanks for the link, this guys seems to know his stuff.

The main problems that i am experiencing are the classes and certain weapon types. Some of the classes work well with the setting but others seem some what off and the multitude of weapons in the martial group seem outof place.

My thoughts on it was to offer the players with classes that have access to martial weapon proficiences the chance to sitch them out with personal firearms proficiency. So you could still have your sword swinging warrior, or you could have you gunslinger wandering the arid landscapes of Amerigo. The only one that i would not offer this too is the barbarian they would have to wait to later levels to gain proficiency with firearms.
taradusis

04-21-07, 02:03 PM
Yes,have the barbarians be too uncivilised to use firearms till they've been in contact with civilisation for awhile. Not every weapon has to be available in the local shops either.
BrokenJade

04-21-07, 02:12 PM
Another problem i think are certain armors, i was just thinking of using the armors out of sidewinder. They have a good selection of armors more fitting to the setting.

That or converting the armor ac bonus to dr vs certain attacks.
taradusis

04-21-07, 02:18 PM
I,personally don't like messing with the armor rules. If living in a world with guns and little effective armor bothers the PCs they may have to change their style of play.Learning to seek cover and watch out for owlhoots that are real back-shooters is part of the wild west feel.Consider giving Pcs a higher starting level?Don't know about this one, review what the msrd has to say about firearms?
BrokenJade

04-21-07, 02:26 PM
the players would be starting at 4 or 5th lvl.

Also in a Wild West setting I'd imagine Initiative being one of the most important stats in Game. Combined with high damage guns and low Massive Damage numbers (say= to constitution)

How about giving some characters (Like fighters) initiative bonuses. Rather than the fighter becoming a tank, he becomes "The fastest gun in the West".

There was a legend about an Apache Chief who no bullet could touch. Native American Medicine might be the most effective protection against firearms. Rather than tribes of Native Americans, you could have whole races - Native Elves, Halflings, Gnomes, Humans, Centaurs, Gnolls. The elves could be the revionist good Native Americans while Natvie Gnolls would be like the old Western's Injuns.

Settlers could include Humans, Dwarves, Orcs, Half-Orcs, Ogres and Lycanthropes fleeing persecution in the Old Country.

Protection from bullets + permanancy

Anyway for Gunfights the OA's rules for Iado Duels could work fine, just change the name to "Gunfight" swap the katana's for sixguns and it's perfect. The Pyschic Duels could work too - just change the name to "Stare down"

Think how many Westerns were remakes of samurai films: A Fistful of Dollars, The Magnificient Seven...

You might look at the older editons download section here on the Wizards site. The Savage Coast / Red Steel sub-setting had a wild west feel to it. The only down side is that it is 2ed.

There was an issue of Dragon that focused on steam-punk. And there are a number of D20 source books for steam-punk. And, for those that don't know, steam-punk includes the old west, after the steam railroad.

The more i think about a wild west style dnd the more I think about steven king's Dark Tower series. That series' setting/universe would be awsome for DnD. It has all the right elements.

How about some magic items.Steal wonder womans concept and have a lasso that forces people to tell the truth?A chakra concealed in a hats brim could be thrown like the hat of ODDJOB in Goldfinger.a metallic hat brim.Spin it around your finger and throw it into the air. When it hits the ground it has stretched into a 10 ft diameter protection from evil circle.a gun belt that teleports bullets into your gun, cuts reloading times?Once per day a ten gallon hat can create 10 gallons of watera star shaped badge that provides a deflection bonus to armor.

They used to be an EC comic featuring ghost tales of the old west.Your characters are about the right level to face some werewolves.I ponder how difficult it would be to introduce horror elements to an old west campaign?Vampires, ghosts, ghouls, lycantho pes have all been around a while.

One thing might be to think of Shadowrun circa 1876 and use some of the material from that game. Maybe the magical event happened in 1871 or something and now its five years later.

There was also a Steampunk issue of Dragon a while back. Maybe a steampunk version of Shadowrun set in the USA.
