| Naderion02-14-08, 09:46 AM | I have thought of a pretty simple but very effective system to create monsters with class levels in a very short time: The DMG has (or had in 3.0) a list for every core class with every level of 1 to 20 and a list with the racial ability modifiers for most common humanoid races. But if you have a class or race that is not in the PHB, you're in for some work which can be more than you really want to make for the chieftains bodyguard that most likely won't fight with the PCs anyway. I think it would be much simpler to turn the whole system around. For example, you wan't to have a 3rd level lizardfolk barbarian. So you have to look up the section "lizardfolk as characters" in the MM. With other creatures, you might have to first substract all those informations from the stats block. Then you have to build a lizardfolk barbarian exactly the same way as if you would create a new character as a PC. Which is okay if you create only one and play him all the time, but not when you likely don't use him at all and have to to half a dozen of them every other friday evening (or saturday morning more likely :D). A much simpler system is this one: Take the standard lizardfolk stats block from the MM (or really any stats block of any creature in any book) and simply aply a template to it just as if you would use the half-fiend template or any other template. Simply add all the things that 3 levels of barbarrian provide: HD +3; hp +19; attack bonus +3; Fort +3, Ref +1, Will +1; Movement Rate +10 ft.; Rage 1/Day; Uncanny Dodge, Trap sense +1. Climb +3, Jump +3, Survival +3, Listen +3; Power Attack Optinal Equipment if the basic creature doesn't have better by default: - Studded Leather Armor (AC +3; Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Slight of Hand, Tumble -1) - Battleaxe Best thing is, that you can make templates of class combinations as well and keep them at hand for when you need them. True, this is not a REAL Lizardfolk 3rd level barbarian. It's a Warrior 1/Barbarian 3, he doesn't have bonus hp for great Con, and may have too many or too few skill points. All two, but would it really make any important difference to the encounter? I would say no. They are also not meant for important NPCs bur rather for staple characters. So why I started this thread is because I'd like some input of which templates I might completely write down. Here are those I've allready picked: Martial Templates Militia/City Guard Veteran: +War1 (poor armor) Militia/City Guard Officer: +War3 (poor armor) Army Soldier: +Ftr1 (good armor) Army Officer: +Ftr3 (good armor) Berserk: +Bbn3 Elite Guard: +Ftr4 (excelent equipment, ability score modifiers) Skilled Templates Thug: +War1 Enforcer: +War1/+Ftr2 Petty Thief: +Rog2 Professional Thief: +Rog4 Traveling Bard: +Brd3 Scout/Hunter: +Rog2/+Rng1 Spellcaster Templates Wizard Aprentice: +Wiz2 Junior Wizard: +Wiz4 Senior Wizard: +Wiz7 Temple Acolythe: +Clr2 Ordained Priest: +Clr4 Head Priest: +Clr7 Novice Druid: +Drd2 Veteran Druid: +Drd4 High Druid: +Drd7 Traveling Bard: +Brd3 Sorcerer: +Soc5 Any ideas what other staple characters would be usefull? |
