Hi everbody, you may remember our beloved Build A City Thread, so I wanted to try to have a shot at it. Now first thing is first and I want to talk about the rules.

Books for BACT2: All the core (PhB, Monster Manual,DM's Guide) Cityscape,All the Races Series, and while not a book the old Avatar things created by Smischmal. (I perfer his system over chi points)
*as OP I reserve the right to add a book in year 5.

The Rules

1) No artifacts. Artifacts are unbelievably rare in the D&D universe. Most adventurers will go their entire careers without ever seeing one.
EXAMPLE-RIGHT: Simon discovers a small ring with feathers engraved lightly on the band. (Feather Fall)
EXAMPLE-WRONG- Angered by the mob, Simon slays them all and claims the +15 unholy, vorpal greatsword of wounding as his own

2) Major events (zombie invasions, dragon razing disintegration of major characters) should be proposed, rather than enacted. You would post a "proposition" at the end of your post if you wanted to do something huge with a rough outline of what you wanted to happen. The NEXT poster would then be able to decide if they thought your major even was truly warranted. Thusly for any event to occur it would have to be seconded, which would hopefully severely reduce (if not eliminate) the need to debate canon.
EXAMPLE-RIGHT: "Proposition" I think it would be interesting for Bobville to be raided by a squad of Hobgoblins
EXAMPLE-WRONG: Bobville is raided by Hobgoblins and dozens die in the ensuing melee. Also, everyone is now a Vampire.

3) Any poster may precede the body of his post with the word "STOP". This means that he has taken serious issue with some event posted in the last chronicle. Further posts should not be made directly chronicling the town's events until the issue has been decided as either canon or non-canon. Without my posting an event can be considered "decided" if three consecutive posts are made in agreement as to whether or not the event is canon excluding the original poster of the event.
EXAMPLE-RIGHT:
Poster 1: Everyone is now a Vampire
Poster 2: STOP. That is ridiculous
Poster 3: I agree. The vampire thing is stupid as hell.
Poster 4: I agree. And that’s three of us so it's out. Next person can chronicle without it.

Each poster (that wishes to) may post a "Chronicle". An account of the activities and the going's on of the town and its residents. A "Chronicle" typically covers between a 1 month and a 3 month period but they may be longer under some circumstances. You may make anything occur that you wish but please obey the following guidelines before chronicling. We will also introduce and completely encourage a different type of entry, the Journal. A “Journal” is just what you think, the musings, thoughts and plans of a PC or NPC in the town. It is NOT an additional “chronicle entry”

I would also like to thank Rockjaw,Deanrule, and many others for laying the foundation for me

Our wonderful cast

Kyle Rockthorn a 9th level earthbender who has obtained land that he dubs Rockport(named after my friend Rockjaw)

His wife Emily Rockthorn a 9th level waterbender who married him when they were young.

Sir Kyle Rockthorn

Kyle looks around the land and smiles. This is his land that he and his wife fought for with their very lives. The land where he grew up on that was taken away from him as a child. He looks over his wife and says "Isn't this beutiful?" "Yes", she replies "I can't believe that we are here and we are going to start up a village" Kyle looks over at his lovely wife and says "Well,, if we are going to start a villiage, we better make it a good one."

Kyle uses his earthbending to create a wall next to him and in a flurry of motions in the next 5 hours he creates, their castle.
His wife than starts waterbending water into a channel that her husband made earlier, for the fields for the farmer.

List of questions coming up :) :

What sort of climate is the city in?

Is it land-bound or on the coast?

What sort of country -
Is there a lot of grassland?
Hills?
Jungle?
Mountains?
Forest?

Where is the water supply coming from -
Lake?
Sea?
River?
Underground?
Multiple small streams?
Springs?

How civilised is this area?
Are there large cities within fairly easy reach?
Is it more a case of small villages scattered across the nearby land?
Is there an easy way for settlers to reach the new city, or does it take some time?
Are there frequent travellers and good roads or is the city going to be fairly isolated?

How safe is this area?
Is it subject to frequent raids or can settlers live in peace?
Is what ever drove the founders out still active or gone forever?

That's it for now, I think.

Ok its time for the Geography

The River: Named Wilfereds River after Wilferd the King of the Kingdom. The river is 30 feet wide 20 miles long and at most 25-35 ft deep. It is formed from the runoff in Lake Piennar and ends in the volocanic region of the burning wastes, which is 50 miles away.

Fertility of the land: The land of Rockthorn is quite contrary in nature to its name. It has wonderful lush land with huge forests near it and the temperature is usually in the 60's or 70s in the spring, fall, and summer. It only cools to the 40s-50s during the winter months because, of the volcanic springs nearby. All plants grown in this region grow much faster and in much better health than per normal.

Volcanos: There is a volacano only 30 miles away that is part of a mountain chain, that erupts once every 50 years or so usually, that causes the surrounding land to be fertile. The next eruption is about 10 years away if it holds its current pace.

Cities: The nearest city is 25 miles away by a dirt road and is called Velgard and has a pop of about 5,000 and they are mainly traders and they also, have the river next to their city.

Monsters: The main monsters are that of orcs and they tend to live in the mountain chain, along with some rough firebenders and earthbenders who are scattered in the region attracted

There are about 50 houses left over from a huge bending fight that oringinally drove Rockthorn out of his home, and the threat was firebenders who have since gone underground, or have been killed by Rockthorn.

The are is relativley safe because of Emily and Kyle although this could change.

Yay, I was wondering when a new one was going to begin. I'd have done it myself but lack the time and energy to maintain it (I also lack the courage.)

Books for BACT2: All the core (PhB, Monster Manual,DM's Guide) Cityscape,All the Races Series, and while not a book the old Avatar things created by Smischmal. (I [prefer] his system over chi points)
*as OP I reserve the right to add a book in year 5.

I don't know what that last item on the list is; I've never heard of it, and I doubt that many of us will have access to it. Could you tell us a little bit about it, what rules you're using from it, some of the fluff, where we can find a copy if we decide to purchase for ourselves?

Ok if you go to d20 anime and go to the older avatar the last airbender, then you will find all you will need. I'm using all the rules besides the Chi powers

The appeal of previous TBACT's has been the basis in core books. Without access to d20 anime many of us will have no idea what you are talking about.

Frankly, I’m not sure if this is right. Here goes nothing.

Story Exert

…Captain Gerrard Miflendier brought his horse to the crest of the hill, stopped, and began to survey the land before him. To the west lush forests of Pine sprout and steadily merge with the foothills of the Dark Haven mountain range. Dark blue waters reach out from the forests edge, heading east toward the Burning Wastes. A small castle is nestled by an artificial channel that snakes its way onto the plains. A cool breeze blows playfully across the landscape. As slate grey eyes wearily search the landscape, Gerrard’s lips begin to twist into a wry grin.

“Well enough,” he motions another man forward. Casually, he motions the convoy behind him to advance…

Practical Ramifications

Captain Gerrard is acting on behalf of The Great Company, a large an well organized mercenary firm. He was sent in advance to offer Company’s assistance in the founding of the newly constructed Rockport Castle in the form of credit, construction workers, and security. As compensation, the Company wants rights to establish a forward base of operations in the Rockport township, in preparation for a new contract in the Dark Haven mountains. In addition, the Company hopes to garner future contracts with Rockport (military or otherwise)

The Advanced Party Consists of:

Captain Gerrard Miflendier : 6th Level Male Human Fighter (Lawful Neutral)
Lieutenant Bren Morgan: 4th Level Female Human Sorcerer (Neutral Evil)
Company Regulars (10): 2nd Level Male Human Warriors (Chaotic Neutral)
Company Workers (16): 1st Level Male Human Commoners (True Neutral)
Company Carpenters (4): 2nd Level Male Human Experts (True Neutral)

Thirded. So I suppose that Cleric and sorcerer work?
Dougan Axehammer

11-28-07, 11:20 PM
Fourthed (or would that be forthed now? :D)

We could also simply use two godless clerics, one with water and healing (or knowledge) domains, the other with earth and protection (or strength) domains. Those domains should pretty much do the same things as the benders (as the story describes.) We could also expand on it a little: another with fire and destruction (or war), and another with air and travel (or luck); but that should wait till later in the story.

Excellent idea, though I'm worried that there is too much "party" or personal interest there. It also seems far too early for such a retinue of people; so far, all they've built is a keep. Secondly, just starting out, there are already two pc-classed characters already; if we're to follow the 50 npcs to 1 pc ratio, then I certainly think that we should wait until later for this company.

My opinion is that they should start with an inn or other waystation on the side of the road, for which they may (or may not) hire a cohort to manage and staff. They would cater to travellers, adventurers, and caravans, garnering support and popularity by word of mouth. Then as the population starts to boom, business begins to sprout and we end up with a city. (But that's just what I think. ;) )

So then we should delay the Company's arrival until we hit around one hundred or so people. Fine by me. I was just trying to give Rockport a faster means of producing buildings and stuff. The Company's angle would also serve as a plot hook, hopefully creating more factions in Rockport for our entertainment.

So anyways, how about this:

Story Exert:

…The sound of crunching gravel filled the air as the two weary travelers made their way down the winding trail. Though the midmorning air is still cool, both of the young trappers look exhausted. A day’s march across Dark Haven’s steep mountain trails is enough to try even the most seasoned frontiersman. A night’s worth of thoughtless running through darkness while chased by orcs brings men past the breaking point. The two come to a halt, looking across the landscape and spot a castle where there was none before…

Practical Effect:

Introduce two trappers to Rockport.

Trappers (2): Level 1 Male Human Commoner (Chaotic Neutral)

Splendid, but let's make them level 3 Warriors instead; "seasoned frontiersman" travelling across "steep mountain trails" through a place called "Dark Haven" just doesn't seem appropriate for level 1 commoners. It would, however, set up the town as more of a frontier city, which I'm partial to. So with just a class and level change, I'd second this proposal.

Also, it hasn't been mentioned yet, but what is the current population? I've noticed 50 houses, but they were never said to be inhabited even though civilians have been mentioned. Have we determined that yet?

Story
A string of six shallow barges towed by stocky ponies glides round the river bend into full view of the new castle. A surprised whistle from the front barge brings the ponies to a halt and a swarm of halflings leap from barge to bank to tether their vessals. Looking round and eyeing up the buildings, they set up a small temporary stall on the river bank...

Practical Effect
A group of halfling traders spots the new settlement on their regular trip up and down the river. Being always ready to add and enhance a new market, they are likely to both spread the word of Rockport's existance and return regularly.

Seconded.

So how about we say that two or three Halflings are now permanent residents of Rockport. They take two of the houses nearest the river and use them as a shop and storehouse. They dig out a 20x50x5 section out of the ground by the river and use this as a makeshift port/docking area.

If the buildings are unoccupied, then yeah, that would work.

I'm also currently working on proposals for cleric versions of Kyle and his wife Emily and possibly an "airbender" and the primary "firebender" antagonist for later.

Journal Entry: Whitestripe

More noise today. Went to look.
Went up to bright-lands. Lots of two-legs around. Hid for a bit. Waited for eyes to stop hurting.
There big thing there now. Like small things, but bigger. Where did it come from? There were two-legs by river. Why they there? Went to look.
A bunch are really short. I wondered why. There was lots of fish, not in river. Had a taste. It was good. One of the short-legs started making loud noise. Left quickly. Came back to den. Grubbed for worms. Slept. Check for more fish again tomorrow.

-------------------------------------------

Who is this mysterious Whitestripe? Or better yet, what? And why does he not have a clear grasp of Common? How will he impact the comings and goings of the denizens of Rockport? Will the short-legs find his hideout and demand for replacement fish? Find out in the next exciting journal entry of...Whitestripe!!!

I'm really intrigued by this idea, and hope to throw my hat into the group of creators as well, here goes:

Only a few short months after the halfling community is begun there is a sudden outcry from the few residents of Rockthorn. A group of orcs is descending from the mountains. They haul with them a great flaming wagon.
Thier approach is watched for days by fearful inhabitants. Many of the halflings prepare to flee for thier lives. Kyle and his queen, masters of the castle prepare for another fight. But the group, aproximatly 50 to Kyle's sharp eyes, stops a full mile from the town, and only a handful of the orcs procede into town. They carry flags and banners, and baskets full of food and simple goods.
As they approach Kyle notes that in fact these are not orcs, but half orcs. There are 4 of them approaching, all kneel at his feet and offer the baskets to him. One speaks "We are simple folk from the mountain lands, worshipers of fire and it's great power. We have been forced from our homelands for rejecting the teachings of Gruumsh.
We offer you these gifts and hope you will accept them and become our lord."

Ramifications
The group of half orcs are true neutral. They are zealotous worshipers of fire, and may demand occasional sacrifices to that end, but they are a peaceful group. The honor guard are thier only warriors (4 L4 warriors) The rest of the group are non-combatants (25 L2 commoners and 5 L2 Experts, with mixed professions) 50% are women and there are an additional 12 children of varying ages.

That the half orcs be allowed to stay, and set up small houses around the castle. Kyle as a cleric of fire, ought to be able to keep control.
Further, that more halflings settle along the riverbanks.

12-06-07, 01:28 PM
Half-Orcs being accepted by Kyle: Seconded.

It seems that the assumed name of the village is Rockport, although I cannot find where anyone proposed this. I am fine with the idea as long as someone seconds it, officially.

STOP
We need a bit more organization here. The format for posting has been wide and varied, and could lead to confusions and fights later on. I propose these changes. For them to be enacted they need to be seconded:

I believe that we are supposed to post what has happened in "Chronicles" that cover a 1-3 month period, as was said by SupercrazyDM, so I am going to post a "Chronicle" that overviews what has happened so far, as well as add one thing or two to the end.

From now on, I propose that we follow the chronicle format, and post events that happen in a period of 1-3 months, instead of a significant moment in time, such as one group arriving and then leaving it at that. Perhaps the format to chronicle should be, enter the number of your chronicle, the name, and the time period it will effect. I will follow this system starting now, if nobody minds. And should we have a rule stating that one person cannot chronicle twice in a row? It seems that that would be a fair ruling.

Also, we should probably set up a calendar system so that we can keep track of events chronologically. If we do set one up, then would SupercrazyDM mind updating his second post with each new chronicle so that it has a list of the chronicles, along with a brief synopsis, the date that chronicle begins and a link to each one? If he can't do it then I would be willing to with this thread, although it would be much more convenient for the information to be at the top of the page. Also, if we set up a calendar system, we would add the calendar date to our chronicles. If need be, we can go back and edit previous chronicles.

As a final note, we should keep track of the population in the same post, and update it with "Significant Persons", including those people with character levels, and a "Mundane Persons" list, basically stating the general population of people. Basically, if you are wondering if someone should be considered Mundane or Significant, then decide whether or not they have a name. Even if you decide to give a Level 1 Commoner the name "Simon", then that means that part of the story of Rockport will follow him, so he becomes significant.
Such a list might look like this:

Population of Rockthorn

Population: 78

PCs

Kyle Rockthorn - Lvl 9 Male Human Cleric(Earth)
Emily Rockthorn - Lvl 9 Female Human Druid

Named NPCs

Bonin - Lvl 2 Male Human Expert (Blacksmith)

Chronicle 1 - The Beginning
Time Period: Three months
Starting Date: January 5th, 1230

First Month:

Kyle Rockthorn and his wife, Emily, build a castle in the midst of a town that was abandoned years ago. The fifty buildings that make up the town are all in some mild state of disrepair, but could easily be fixed up with a little TLC and elbow grease.

Third Month:

Suddenly, there is a sudden outcry from the few residents of Rockthorn. A group of orcs is descending from the mountains. They haul with them a great flaming wagon.
Thier approach is watched for days by fearful inhabitants. Many of the halflings prepare to flee for thier lives. Kyle and his queen, masters of the castle prepare for another fight. Kyle accepts the half-orcs into his small community, and hopes that he can keep things from getting too crazy. He welcomes the addition of farmers, however, because surviving off of food caught in the wild would not last through the coming winter. Luckily it is spring, and there is still time for the farmers to plant a few of the fields to harvest in the fall.
[ 4 fields planted ]

Around the end of March, a group of people is spotted coming down the road from the nearby city of Velgard. It turns out to be a group of emissaries, who greet the new Lord Rockthorn, and inquire as to the nature of his current Thorp. After hearing his statements of rebuilding the village that was once here, they nod emphatically, and then produce a set of papers. The papers state that the land he has built on was and still is, the rightful property of Duke Talnor of Velgard. If he wishes to continue holding his land legitimately, he should visit Velgard within the next month to swear fealty to Duke Talnor, after which a small percentage of all wealth garnered by the village would be sent to Velgard in the form of taxes. With that, the small retinue departs, leaving Kyle to ponder on what to do...
[ Kyle must decide to swear fealty or risk angering the only civilized community nearby, Velgard ]

Ending date: April 5th, 1230

Kyle Rockthorn a 9th level earthbender who has obtained land that he dubs Rockport(named after my friend Rockjaw)

Since it’s in one of the original posts I don’t think it needs a second, but to keep it proper I’ll second. I’ll also follow the chronicle format, tho I think it’s immaterial if we discuss a month, a week or a moment. I also think you’ll be out of luck with the OP changing his posts since he hasn’t posted here for a while, but I could be wrong, maybe you could PM him.

Chronicles of Rockport Apr. 5 –May 5
Kyle Rockthorn’s small retinue leaves Rockport on Apr 9. Accompanying him on the journey to Velgard are 2 of the half-orc honor guard and a halfling merchant, who hopes to make new connections to the leadership in the larger town.
The journey takes 2 full days on horseback , and they arrive on the 11th. They are greeted by Duke Talnor in his great hall. The Duke commands that Kyle and his companions stay for a week. During a meal to commemorate the new alliance of towns Kyle is asked to swear fealty. He lowers himself to his knee and repeats the oath a scribe recites:
“I Kyle Rockthorn do swear my fealty to you Talnor, Duke of Velgard.
“I swear one twentieth of the resources generated in Rockport will be delivered to Velgard every year on tax day
“I swear to protect and defend the land ceded to me and to obey and enforce the laws of Velgard in this land
“I further swear one quarter of my army to the service of the duke of Velgard for up to 6 months of the year and I swear my own service should I be called upon to protect the homeland.
“In exchange for this I accept a position as Lord of Rockport, subject of Talnor, and ruler of all that lies within 10 miles of castle Rockthorn on the River Wilferd.”

I fear I have made a great mistake.
I may have promised far more than our small village may be able to give. This Talnor seems a fair man, but he is aged and his children squabble over the duchy as toddlers over a bag of candy.
I especially fear being recalled by the lord to fight for him in a battle of his choosing. I have spoken little of my earthbending and hope he will overlook me as an unskilled warrior with only a few men under my control. In truth if he were to call up one quarter of my forces he would receive only 1 man and poorly trained at that.
During our return trip I spoke with my traveling companions regarding the decision I have made. The halfling appears excited about the prospect of opening up a new town to his new mercantile community. The half-orcs claim support me in any decision I make.

With a heavy heart Kyle leads his men back to Rockport, eager to relieve his wife of the weight of ruler ship.
The rest of the month slowly passes without incident. Fields are beginning to grow rapidly, and the orcish farmers are pleased with the new land, and begin to give small gifts to their new queen hoping to win her favor and improve their own fortunes.

Now might be a good time to bring in the Company convoy mentioned earlier by False-paradox-Truth

Hmmmm. Interesting. A solid start to this one. As long as Supercrazy keeps his eyes on this it seems theres enough writing talent to bring this town and this thread to where it needs to be.

Well I'm watching. ;-)

I'm not quite so sure about the company yet, our town is still the size of a Thorp, I believe, and might not attract that kind of attention until later. For now, lets try and bolster the population a bit.

I did a bit of backreading of the original Build a City Thread, and I think the best format for chronicling would be to just say the months being covered and the year, as I do in the following post. Hopefully Rockport works out as nicely as Eckland!

Also, I will attempt to update my posts from before, regarding the people of Rockport, and will soon add a "History" type thing that links to the chronicles, seeing as SuperCrazy hasn't responded

Chronicles of Rockport: May 5 - July 5, Year 1
While Kyle might have had his doubts about swearing fealty to Talnor, there was an added benefit. Rockport has become known to the town of Velgard, and over the next two months a few families are attracted to Rockport by the promise of land and a fresh start.

In addition to this new boost to the population, word has spread throughout the halfling community by the riverboats that frequently pass by Rockport. Over the next two months halflings slowly trickle into Rockport, establishing themselves in the houses near the riverbank, and take to doing a variety of work for the town, in addition to expanding the docks.

I like what I see so far and, thank you Supercrazy for the small accolade.

I'm adding this small chronicle for everyone to read, and of course to review. I always have and will welcome critiscism to my entries but if you all agree I would greatly like to contribute.

Chronicles of Rockport Months Aug-Oct Year-1

Word of the new, or rather resettled, land has spread. Youngling families come to try and prosper on their own, and make their individual mark on the land. The small community is tight knitted and quite self supportive, however skilled tradesman are in need. At least that was the rumor heard by Bonin, now here he was sitting in a small wagon pulled by a cankerous mule, in the rain looking at the town he hoped to make a difference in. All his possessions were in the wagon with him, and they added up to not much, a few changes of clothing some tools for working the forge and 30 ingots of smelted iron. In a small well built locked chest were his most prized possessions, his papers certifying his standing as a competent Smith, 25 various coins representing his life savings, and one small two-pound block of greenish-blue metal.

“Well sitting in the rain won’t get me any closer to the hope of a fire.” Said Bonin aloud, “Come on Fanny dear lets get in out of the weather” as he flipped the leather straps gently on the back of the mule.

Bonin (HM Str-18) Expert-Blacksmith lvl-2

The Halfling merchants, have been busy moving and setting up their small shop area and commandeering another dilapidated home to use as a store house, merrily cleaning and repairing their chosen domiciles some of the residents of the burgeoning town have jokingly referred to the area as the ‘Halfling Quarter’ but they prefer to refer to it as ‘Merchants Row’. Some debate is raging as to weather the small folk will elect or nominate a potential leader or if they are waiting for one to arrive.

As the Fall season begins a custom of sharing the dinner-meal is adopted by many of the residents, this usually happens on the seventh day, typically reserved for rest and family time. Residents open their homes and move from house to house exchanging well-wishes and sharing food and drink, Kyle and Emily gladly join in the meandering and heartily welcome this as a excellent community event.!

Harvests are taken and food stored for the coming winter, once the fields are cleared the Hlf-Orc agriculturists, Duggon, Hask, and Olen, gather to discuss increasing the tilled lands and trying to acquire more varied seed stock for the next year. A plan is hatched to sent volunteers into the wild to look for wild-growing tubers, root vegetables, and others

The days grow shorter and colder, with the coming Winter, the good folk of the town stock in supplies of wood and prepare for their first true test.

Cronicles of Rockport Nov-Dec
Heavy clouds blot out the sun in November and disaster strikes when one of the half-orc children falls into the cold river and drowns.
December is quiet and cold in Rockport. Residents eat sparsely from food stores and catch small animals to supplement their diet. The farmers have collected various wild seeds to create a better variety for the coming year, and the root cellars are full of wild turnips and yams.
On the shortest day of the year, the half-orcs celebrate with a bonfire festival. During the day there os a light snow, and half-orcs busy themselves with preparations for the nights revelry. In the spirit of community many of the halflings brave the sprinkling of snow to assist.
As the sun falls below the horizon Kyle is asked to light the huge pyre that has been erected in the middle of town. He makes a short speech on community, friendship, the challenges overcome and the challenges yet to come. Then he intones a few archaic words and a small flame appears in his palm. The half-orcs cheer riotously as he touches the dried wood, which erupts into flame. Drinking and revelry ensues as the half-orcs dance round and round the great bonfire long into the night. Halflings, eager for an excuse to party, join in and even some of the human townsfolk gather round the great fire. A few hours past midnight, when most of the humans and halflings have retired, war-cries and obscenities pierce the night. Orcs appear from the shadows, and javelins strike the ground around the bonfire.
One of the dancers cries out in pain and Kyle jumps into action. The ground beneath the bulk of the orcish forces becomes a swamplike mess of mud. Emily and Kyle prepare further spells, but before they have a chance to cast Kyle crumples to the ground.

Dec. 22
The fighting stopped for me when Kyle collapsed. My husband lay on the ground not breathing. I rushed to his side and pulled the spear from his chest. I cast various cure spells and the hole in his ribcage began to close. His heart continued to beat and I bent over him to kiss his face. Suddenly there was a scream behind me, and I turned to see an axe-wielding orc charging me. I froze, but Kyle muttered a spell and the orc stopped as he reached the edge of a sanctuary spell.
I spent more time tending to Kyle who was in and out of consciousness, and tuned out the battle raging around us. Before I could believe it the sun was rising and the noise was gone.
I surveyed the scene. Kyle will survive his wounds after a few days rest, but some of our other residents will not. Two of the half-orc warriors lie dead in the snow as does the halfling boatswain. Many of the townsfolk need healing and I suppose the job will fall on my shoulders, tho I can hardly imagine helping anyone but Kyle right now.. Some of the buildings have been burned or torn to the ground and much of our stored food is gone. The orcs took a heavy toll, and their dead will have to be dealt with as well, many of them are half-buried in the frozen earth where they fell into Kyle’s earth-to–mud spell.
It is a sad day in Rockport, and we will meet as a community to decide what to do about the orcish threat.

Administrative stuff
I probably should have proposed and had it seconded, before I posted that, but it just kind of poured out. If anyone wants to throw up a STOP or just ask and I can edit the post.
Also I tried to PM SupercrazyDM to ask about keeping a tally on the 1st post, but his PM mailbox is full.
I know someone else has talked about it, but I’m probably going to propose a build for Kyle and Emily soon, unless you beat me to it.

Hi Rockjaw, it's good to see one of the original BaCT posters join in the fun! I'm still reading through the Chronicles of Eckland. My god you guys did a lot in just a few months. Reading through it has been slow going though, due to final exams.

JackSnape: Great post! I liked the inclusion of the journal entry to give it a more personal feel. I wonder how this will effect immigration to the village? By the way, did you have an idea of how many villagers are dead other than the Boatswain and Warriors?

And to keep things official I'll second that the orcs from the mountains attack to persecute the half-orc tribe.

I think thats all for now. I'll post a chronicle later, but if anyone else wants to post one, don't wait on me, I'll just post the one after that.

[Edit: I updated the Population List to account for the last two posts.]

Don't worry about the chronicle; I liked it for one, and it also set a frontier atmosphere to the city. In my opinion, the previous BACTs were a little soft on their population.

I've also finished the build for Kyle (melee oriented cleric with the earth and an earth-related domain), and I am now working on Emily. However, since I would like to put them both in the same chronicle, go ahead and work on both for now. Maybe I'll have mine up in time and we can vote on whose builds to use. Also keep in mind that I suggested the idea of two other "benders" for air (CN) and fire (NE). I still think they should be clerics (IMO domains would work best) but you can use whichever core class you deem appropriate.

P.S. Good Luck :D

Was the heavy snow fall a freak storm? Was wondering because SupercrazyDM stated that the winter temps range from 40-50, not cold enough for a heavy snow fall or atleast it wont last long on the ground. It could be colder at higher altitides but I would think it would melt by the time it hit land or shortley after.

From the 4th post:

"Fertility of the land: The land of Rockthorn is quite contrary in nature to its name. It has wonderful lush land with huge forests near it and the temperature is usually in the 60's or 70s in the spring, fall, and summer. It only cools to the 40s-50s during the winter months because, of the volcanic springs nearby. All plants grown in this region grow much faster and in much better health than per normal."

Other than that question, awsome work.

Thanks for the heads up Rizzen.

I propose that we let anyone who wants to put up a build for Kyle and/or Emily, then let anyone and everyone vote, If we give people 2 days to put builds up we can begin voting on the 24th, and maybe leave voting open for 2 days as well. What does everyone think?

My next character, Alex, will be the airbender, and I will have him up at some point in the future. The concept for these were to capture as much of the essence of elemental clerics by modeling the build around the aspects of each element. For Kyle, the earthbender, I really wanted to focus on the strength and the protective aspects of earth; by giving him some combat feats he became more paladin-like and I tailored his spell choices around protection and buffing. For Emily, I had envisioned a motherly sage, focusing on the water aspects of healing and knowledge; by making the second domain healing, I was able to bring out the sage in her while still making her spells curative and restorative. I didn't delve into appearance or personality; I only wanted to focus on the mechanics and figured the thread would take care of the rest. (However, Jack's descriptions were good enough for me.)

Remember, candidacy will only be for a few days (till Sunday?), after which the voting begins. (Hopefully, the thread will pick up as a result.)

Actually, the two are unrelated. I almost always try to include some sort of background related skill (usually profession or craft) into my characters, spending only enough skill points to make one rank. While reading the setting description, I noticed that before Kyle was disposed, the land was arable farm land. That meant he probably had some training as a farmer, giving him least one rank of profession-farming. The fact that he is an earth cleric with profession-farming is purely coincidence. Nice choice of feats, by the way; "Earth Cleric Modifications", what's that? I know it's homebrew, but is there a more mechanical descripition (such as you'd see in the PHB or a supplement?)
JackSnape

12-29-07, 01:10 PM
It corresponds to the other astericked (*) items in the descriptions

If I were to write it ot it'd go like this:
EARTH CLERIC MODIFICATIONS FEAT-Cleric only- You are especially attuned to the holy forces of the earth.
You give up the ability to turn undead in order to gain the ablility to turn BOTH air and Fire creatures a number of times equal to 3+ your charisma modifier.
Additionally you give up the ablity to spontaniously cast heal spells and instead gain the ability to spontainously cast spells from the earth domain.

I just wanted him to feel more connected to the earth, more like an "earth cleric" than a cleric with the earth domain. I felt like I should spend a feat on it tho, since it's pretty homebrew and it will likely be more usefull to Kyle than turning undead would be, and wiht Emily around the lack of healing spells probably won't be a problem.

I'm hesitant to contribute, as I was particularly disruptfull to the last TBACT. I love the TBACT concept, and I've enjoyed reading what has been posted here in this third installment. Hopefully the holiday season hasn't killed this thread!

I hesitate to vote for a build with a homebrewed feat, just because it makes the town a little less plug'n'play.

Question: If an earthbender is a cleric, and a waterbender is a druid; is a firebender a sorcerer? And, if so, what then is an airbender? Just something to consider.

Keep up the good work!

I don't think you should worry about being disruptful; I'm more or less on top of this thread. If I see something that doesn't seem to jive, I'll stop the thread so that we can discuss it. Please feel free to contribute anything you like.

This thread seems to die off once in a while. Which is a shame since I think it has the potential to be a great and really interesting thread. Unfortunatly it doesn't seem to have community support, and that's what makes it fun. If you're lurking and expecting to watch this thread develop--STOP IT!! At this point I think the first vote decides the builds of our heroes. SOMEONE VOTE!!
Also I have builds for a firebender and an airbender as soon as the heroes are decided. Dougan may have one ready too, but anyone else who thinks they have a good build should ready it in case we get that deciding vote on the heroes.
I keep not posting because I expect thie thread to just die a natural death, but it seems lich-like in it's inablity to live or die. :ghosted:

FYI, I used Tuskbay (from TBACTII) in my campaign this week. The characters arrived in the first week of the 10th engineer corps arrival, and have already played through the first hunting party, the kobold arrival, and up the episode with the attacking boars. I will be posting the chronicle shortly in the harbinger saga thread.
