| Aleolus01-12-08, 12:28 AM | Ok, here's a kingdom I came up with that I'm wanting some critiques on. This is mostly the basics for it, I can flesh out anything that needs to be later on as people mention them. Right now, I'm looking for opinions and critiques! The Kingdom of Ertannia Ertannia is a kingdom with a central focus on knowledge. They believe that there is nothing as noble as the pursuit of knowledge, and that knowing oneself and ones foes is the surest path to success and glory. Ertannia is a mixed community of Humans and Elves, with quite literally every building doubling as a library. Even personal houses have libraries of information, though it is considered extremely rude to attempt to access a personal household’s library without first obtaining permission from the owners. In this kingdom, the individuals have learned how to work together best to advance their learning and preserve what has been learned for future generations. They have learned that humans, with their innate curiosity and attitude for advancing and moving forward, are excellent at making new discoveries and learning things that have never before been known. However, due to their short lifespans, the information gained tends to be warped, twisted and corrupted quickly, and even those who make the discoveries do not always fully comprehend the impact of what they have learned. This is where the elves, with their innate understanding of the world and magic and their long lifespans, come in, ensuring that the information gained is preserved accurately, and that the full impact is understood by all who would seek to use it. Ertannia is ruled by a council of six elders, three humans and three elves, all of whom are extremely well-researched Archivists or Wizards (20 or more levels, split among the two classes). They deliberate and come to decisions on any major issue, and any new information recorded is to be submitted to them for evaluation. Any issues of legality are presented before the council by a neutral third party, who keeps the identities of the involved individuals secret, so as to allow the council to come to an unbiased decision on the matter. If the council is unable to reach a consensus, then the half to which the issue is related most directly (humans or Elves) has precedence. If both have equal precendence, then they make use of the Petition (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=14789529) spell to contact a deity, usually St. Cuthbert (as he is known for his fairness and equality), to receive his advice on the matter. Ertannia is primarily a good nation, though evil individuals are tolerated there quite well so long as they do not make trouble for other individuals, and continue to further the cause of knowledge. Among it’s people, the greatest crime that can be committed is the intentional destruction of knowledge, for which the punishment is permanent banishment from the kingdom, generally via the Banish (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=975242) spell. No action can atone for this crime, and only with extreme mitigating circumstances will the council be willing to pass down a lesser sentence. Banish and Petition are spells I came up with after developing this kingdom, I linked the pages with their effects on with the names on this post. Thanks muchly! |
