| Anaesthesia08-17-07, 02:47 PM | (Mods feel free to move whereever this is deemed more appropriate.) A girl in my group and I were talking about how to make The Princess Bride fit into dnd rules. I'd be basing it off the book version, and start after the book ends. Meaning Inigo would now be Dread Pirate Roberts, and the Count would be dead. (This campaign would also ignore Buttercup's Baby if William Goldman will write it). This won't be for anytime soon, so I will have to work on it. I know the Fire Swap and the Cliffs of Insanity are both doable, and I will have to work on the Zoo of Death (this was the original version to the Pit of Despair-ever level farther down you went, the more difficult animal encounters are, and were done by what means the animals killed you/people, ie Level of poisionous animals, etc). We were talking about the following characters and what class they would be in. This would probably be level 10, depending on how the levels are worked on Westly and Inigo Buttercup-Probably NPC, all of her levels would be a combo of Aristocrat and Commoner. Westly-At least 1 or 2 levels of commoner, Profession (Farmer), Dread pirate levels, and Duelist levels. Maybe a swashbuckler level or 2 thrown in there... Inigo Montoya/Dread Pirate Roberts-Duelist levels, Dread Pirate levels, and maybe 1 or 2 swashbuckler levels would also need Perform (oratory/poetics) Fezzik-Monk, would also need Perform (oratory/poetics) Miracle Max and Valerie-Max would be a cleric, Valerie would need Wizard Prince Humperdink Aristocrat, and Assassin. Someone needs to be the evil villian. Guilds:Brute Squad (Fezzik) Is this a good idea? Anything need to be changed or added to? |

| TheHarrow08-18-07, 04:44 AM | A game based upon the Princess Bride, is in IMHO, the very best way to get girls into the RPG hobby. Girls love that movie with a passion (not all, of course, but enough). It's all about the princess, boys. |
| darth_borehd08-18-07, 07:11 AM | I absolutely love this movie and think all D&D should be like it. What books are you allowing? I would make the main NPCs like so using Complete Warrior, Complete Adventurer, and the SRD (post movie): Westley: Swashbuckler 7/Dread Pirate 5 Inigo Montoya: Fighter 6/Duelist 5/Dread Pirate 1* Fezzik: Half-Giant Monk 10/Hulking Hurler 2 Prince Humperdinck: Aristocrat 3/Ranger 10 Princess Buttercup: Aristocrat 1/Commoner 11 Miracle Max: Cleric 17 Valerie: Enchanter 17 I don't think that Inigo and Fezzik need ranks in Perform (poetry), it was more of a game they would play rather than a performance in front of the crowd. To simulate it in-game, I would let players make an intelligence check (or perform (poetry) if it would be higher) and give them as many seconds as their check result to think of a rhyme before having to pass to the next player. Also, you can interpret some of the characters as corresponding to non-human D&D races depending on how you read the descriptions. Vizzini could fit as a dwarf, for instance. * The book never said explicitly that he became the new Dread Pirate Roberts. In fact the preview of Buttercup's Baby implies that he didn't. |
| Anaesthesia08-22-07, 04:12 PM | Hmmm. Sounds good to me, but didn't they kill Humperdink? I don't know, it's been a while. No, Inigo killed the Count and were going to do "to the pain" to Humperdink Darth, good point. I have a fuzzy memory of the preview of Buttercup's Baby. Thanks for the reminder of Inigo's standing and about the perform (poetry) stuff. I'll have to add in books later, I'm on my way out.. |
| Zousha_Omenohu08-22-07, 06:44 PM | Hmmm. Sounds good to me, but didn't they kill Humperdink? I don't know, it's been a while. "No one kills Humperdink. He lives." |
| Holy_Beholder08-22-07, 08:11 PM | (This campaign would also ignore Buttercup's Baby if William Goldman will write it). William Goldman wrote Princess Bride, he made up S. Morgenstern, and both Florence and Guilder were currencies. He basically wrote a book pretty well, then added in the itallic sections to whine about non existing sections, until the reader hated him so that it made Morgensterns work seem that much better. He also made up the bit about the columbian professors, the family of Morgenstern, Helen and his fat son, and the "lost" buttercups baby and Steven King getting it. Inigo should probably be swashbuckler/duelist, with weapon finesse, weapon focus, and a +5 rapier(read the description, its +5) As for to the pain, that was Westly, and Inigo did kill the count(owned) then they fled, and at the end it looked like they were about to be overtaken, then Buttercups Baby started. I had to read the book over the summer, so I did some research(I also had to read the Odyssey which was completely awesome, and the Alchemist, which sucked painfully. The whole universe wants to help you, god leaves you a trail, god will lead you to the treasure, you should be brave, repeat several hundred times and add some half written love story, and try to appear wise throughout it. The New York Times, or maybe Post said something to the effect of "reading the alchemist is like watching the sun rise in the morning before everyone else is up" Unfortunately, it seemed a little more like standing in heavy traffic trying to deal with the noise while simultaneously staring straight at the sun, at noon, during the summer equinox. Through a telescope.) Also, he doesn't need perform poetry, just a half decent charisma, it is one line he worked for years on, along with a little rhyming every so often, all that goes to say is that Fezzik's intelligence might be a little higher than it would otherwise seem. |
| OmnipotentSeal08-22-07, 08:31 PM | Now this is an appealing idea. A possible suggestion or just a neat idea, you could possibly write (or find) rules completely devoted to the finer points of fencing and swashbuckling, in order to capture the old school Errol Flynn feel of the movie. It would be doing an adaption to Princess Bride a disservice to have a character like Inigo simply "walk up" to a NPC and "whack the person with his sword," when characters could be jumping around furniture, swing on ropes, while using different fencing stances. |
| Holy_Beholder08-22-07, 08:40 PM | Tome of battle can be modeled after fencing, you might have to talk to Tempest Stormwind though, he found the conversion. I fence, but my ToB fu is lacking sorely. |
