| Absynthe_minded2110-08-07, 07:16 AM | A campaign setting I've been working on for a while now is Scattersky. After reading another thread here I thought I would open up the floor to similiar replies. History Long Forgotten. Facing defeat against overwelming demonic forces several powerful orders of good united and attempted to elevate an entire continent several hundred feet into the air. The effort was a success, however the driving evil deity blasted the hovering land mass into thousands of pieces. During this effort so much of his power was spent that he was unable to defend himself when his underlings turned on him. With the dark lord destroyed they turned on each other in a struggle for domniance over what remained of his empire and so their conquest was never truely completed. 3000 years laters. The world has survived. Beneath the flying islands the still connected continent is now a home to hordes of demons constantly battling each other for power while hundreds of feet in the air small communities are again reaching civilised status (or well beyond it) The Project. Design an island, anywhere from a hundred feet to a hundred miles across. Populate it however you see fit. Things to Consider. Drift and elevation. The islands range from 500 to 1500 feet off the ground and drift in circles that range in size so they will occasionally pass near, above, below, or even crash into another island. (Most islands drift at a pace of about ten miles a day) This also makes mapping the entire world extremely difficult. Resources. Farmland is scarce, water is scarcer. Any culture that hopes to successfully live on an island will have to conserve space. For some this means living under ground, for other it means constructing tower like villages. The idea of "chaining" is common (to permanently attach a smaller passing island to your own using magic, or possibly even chains) as well as raiding passing occupied islands. Travel. Flying mounts, flying ships, and teleportation are must haves for any culture intending to move from island to island. Interaction. Since islands pass each other only on occassion (and in many instances never at all) both trade and warfare are severly limited. All other features such as gravity, weather, and time are typical of the prime material. Have fun and be creative. -21 |

This may seem like a stupid question, seeing as it was originally a floating continent and each island still floats, but would there be countless fist sized rocks flying about, or would they fall? Will earth that is conjured on one of these islands take up their bouyant properties, such as a Wall of Stone spell? |

| locustechpriest10-08-07, 08:55 AM | I think it is safe to say, that any work of artifice taking 70 years to produce will never be made by humans. What do you base the figure of 180 of each applicable spell upon? Also, realize that it is general consensus that the spell and caster level formula is the worst possible way to price a magic item, and that the actual power or utility of the item should be the first consideration. A folding boat looks like a small wooden box—about 12 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. It can be used to store items like any other box. If a command word is given, however, the box unfolds itself to form a boat 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet in depth. A second command word causes it to unfold to a ship 24 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. Any objects formerly stored in the box now rest inside the boat or ship. In its smaller form, the boat has one pair of oars, an anchor, a mast, and a lateen sail. In its larger form, the boat has a deck, single rowing seats, five sets of oars, a steering oar, an anchor, a deck cabin, and a mast with a square sail. The boat can hold four people comfortably, while the ship carries fifteen with ease. A third word of command causes the boat or ship to fold itself into a box once again. Faint transmutation; CL 6th; Craft Wondrous Item, fabricate, creator must have 2 ranks in the Craft (shipmaking) skill; Price 7,200 gp; Weight 4 lb. This rug is able to fly through the air as if affected by an overland flight spell of unlimited duration. The size, carrying capacity, and speed of the different carpets of flying are shown on the table below. Beautifully and intricately made, each carpet has its own command word to activate it—if the device is within voice range, the command word activates it, whether the speaker is on the rug or not. The carpet is then controlled by spoken directions. Size - Capacity - Speed - Weight - Market Price 5 ft. by 5 ft. - 200 lb. - 40 ft. - 8 lb. - 20,000 gp 5 ft. by 10 ft. - 400 lb. - 40 ft. - 10 lb. - 35,000 gp 10 ft. by 10 ft. - 800 lb. - 40 ft. - 15 lb. - 60,000 gp A carpet of flying can carry up to double its capacity, but doing so reduces its speed to 30 feet. It has average maneuverability, but a carpet of flying can still hover. Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Wondrous Item, overland flight, permanency. The folding boat actually has very little to do with the topic at hand, seeing as its only real use is convenience of storage. The only reason I include it here is to get a relative look at the kinds of costs involved in a boat-like magic item. Our floating boats and ships are primarily useful for the aerial transportation of multiple persons and cargo. Carpets of flying give a good comparison for both of these functions. A boat, as described in the folding boat entry, is about equivalent in size to the second type of carpet, while the ship is about double the size of the third. I found some rules from d20 Modern relating to capacities of vehicles with regard to passengers, which I used in conjunction with the description for the folding boat to come up with the new item. The amount of cargo the vehicle is designed to carry. Many vehicles can carry extra passengers instead of cargo, but doing so is usually a cramped, uncomfortable, and often unsafe experience for those passengers. As a rule of thumb, one additional passenger can be carried for each 250 pounds of unused cargo capacity. The boat has one pair of oars, an anchor, a mast, and a lateen sail. The ship has a deck, single rowing seats, five sets of oars, a steering oar, an anchor, a deck cabin, and a mast with a square sail. The boat can hold four people comfortably, while the ship carries fifteen with ease. In addition to people, an Ariship can carry an amount of goods. It can hold up to double its capacity, but doing so reduces its speed to 30 feet. It has average maneuverability, but an Airship can still hover. The ship can be configured for either passenger or cargo transport, and switching between the two can be done with a single day's work. Size - Passengers - Speed - Market Price 5 ft. by 10 ft. - 4 - 40 ft. - 35,000 gp 10 ft. by 20 ft. - 15 - 40 ft. - 110,000 gp Size - Cargo - Crew - Speed - Market Price 5 ft. by 10 ft. - 750 lb. - 1 person - 40 ft. - 35,000 gp 10 ft. by 20 ft. - 3000 lb. - 3 persons - 40 ft. - 110,000 gp Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Wondrous Item, overland flight, permanency, fabricate, creator must have 5 ranks in the Craft (shipmaking) skill. Still under construction... ;) |

| fodigg10-08-07, 01:05 PM | I think this has a lot of potential, and I'm curious how these islands will be "dangerous" as it seems like the real danger is in the devil infested lands below. And what reason would people living in this world have for traveling to the earth below? would they? This is basically a campiagn where the humans are celestials, but flawed celestials. That's really interesting. Also, I love th campaign name. Scattersky nails it. |
