Are dwarves the principal arctic race then? Are they as you seem to depict more nomadic savages than creators of fine metal goods? And if so--out of curiousity--why dwarves? Or are dwarves actually known for being these unusual tundra dwellers?

Nomads, yes. Savage? No, not really, unless you consider native americans to be savage.

And yes, they are currently the arctic race, along with giants, and possibly more later on.

No, they're not the fat, drunk guys in horned helmets that walk around brandishing their axes and singing songs about gold, but a less stereotypes never killed anyone.

Lastly, I used dwarves because they're tough enough to survive in the wastes, make good barbarians (as in, dwarven barbarians aren't unheard of, at all), and because I like dwarves enough to want to include them in a non-cliched way.

Oh, and if any of you are thinking frostrager for the dwarves here, than yes, some of em are.

Going point by point..

Glad you like the feat.

The class is made by me and still under construction, it may be found here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13419009#post13419009).

Good idea, they can now, I forgot about the silly multiclass restrictions on monks...

hmm...no idea, up to you, I guess.

Oh, and by the way, these guys happen to be every kobold's favorite kind of dwarf. Why? They don't take space underground, they respect/revere dragons, all in all, from a kobold's point of view, they're Our Kind Of People.

hmm...seemed odd at first, but that's a pretty good idea. Bear in mind that these dwarves are fairly dark. Think about it, snow and ice are reflective, these places can get loads of sunlight (even 24/7, in the right season), so they would be dark/tanned, I'm thinking a sort of golden brown, like Azers, but a tad darker.

Yeah, it happens a lot, with people thinking "right, cold place, far north, lotsa ice, no light, pale chaps, got it."

(hi, cog! I'll post these things again on the chatter thread, by the way)

a quick note: if they are as far south as I'm imagining, winter would be one long night, summer one long day. Also, I suspect that you've based these dwarves on the Mongols (y'know, nomadic warriors led by a khan that run around a chilly wasteland (okay, so it's not a steppe, per se)) To pull it off completely, I'd recommend making regional feats focus on archery and riding. The Mongols were ruthlessly effective at mounted archery, and would depend on their horses for food occasionally (sucking some blood from the ear to sustain them) Also, Mongols were very superstitious, which I get the impression that you retained with the shamans...when running encounters with 'em, though, I'd throw in quirky little rituals or taboos, especially with religious figures (monks or shamans)

Then again, you compared them to Native Americans, so I might be off the mark completely, and they're not Mongols after all.

All in all, I liked it a lot, nice job!

Not mongolian, or mooglian, despite the startling and unintentional resemblance to the former. Not native american-based, either, I was simply using them as an example to say that these dwarves aren't Savage, or even savage. Still, I'd appreciate it a lot if you look up any that you think may fit from wikipedia, queen, it'd help a lot.

Also, good idea on the mass superstition, I'll write that in. Glad you liked it, too:) .

And yeah, they would be rather healthier. I completely forgot about that (shame on me, considering my mom is a naturopath/nutritionist). Thanks again queen.

Finally, thanks a lot to both of you for your massive feedback so far (especially queenfange), and a big thanks to Taradusius, too, even if he didn't feature on this particular thread at all.

I can't stand dwarves... though they are probably a good pick for an artic, nomad race, what with them basically being eskimos...

Eh? What do you have against them? If it's the hi-ho, hi-ho, bearded-drunken-short-stuff stereotype that you dislike, this is nothing like it.

Sure, no problem. Anything in particular you'd like some input on? I know queenfange is looking at Native Americans, so if there's anything else you'd like looked at...

honestly? help with the shaman class, by means of giving me help with creating/fixing existing spirits to match up a little more relevantly with norse mythology. Other than that, I could use some help with the wastes itself, rather than just the... vertically challenged chaps in it.

Well just to show how ubiquitous(sp?)I can be here's a few thoughts. My random Aquatic notes thread 771660 has an arctic island called hothia (island #59,post 151) For this island I gave some rough notes on snow lillies, ice cows and ice spiders?I think you could adapt the snow cows to the Wastes quite easily?Back in 2 ED days we had a race known as vegepygmies that were jungle dwelling humanoids made from plants.Suppose you had a type of snow cow that was a mobile plant? These cows would have thin, dark green bodies. They would be mobile during the 6 month day, moving from water source to nutrient rich soil.During the 6 month night they would curl up for protection against the elements? If they produced protein the way soy plants do they would be digestable by a carnivorous race just like dogs can be fed soy products?RANDOM THOUGHT

Cool...I'm about to go the library, so I'll see what I can dig up on the good ol' Norse.

Something I'm curious about is why you decided to pair the dwarves up with white dragons.I usually envision Silver dragons and Hill dwarves as natural allies because of Terraign,Alignment and Multi-century long lifespans, plus the silvers can assume humanoid form which makes the creation of Half silver dragon/half dwarf combo's more likely?RANDOM THOUGHTS.

The white dragons aren't evil, for one. Evil/good is entirely up to the individual in my campaigns, and not decided by race/species. Also, white dragons represent savage strength to the dwarves, something which silvers don't do at all.

Hey, just a thought, but might the dwarves pray to these dragons for the power of their spirits (the ones the shamans bind)?

Another random thought: what if the dwarves believed that they needed to petition a white dragon for it to guide their spirit to the afterlife when they die? I know that the Vikings didn't really have a decent life after death for anyone who died of age or disease, so that could be a mark of strength. Anyone fierce enough to ask a favor of a white dragon and come back alive is tough enough for the afterlife...meh. This really hasn't got any bearing on the setting, but I thought I'd mention it.

Both good ideas, would the dragon be an individual spirit, or did you have something else in mind?

That's up to you, really. It could be that the dragon is the source of power, a medium, whatever you think works.
