Yeah I'm going to start DMing a new campaign soon and i wanted to try something new with arcane magic. I am trying to figure out a way to incorporate the taint rules with casting arcane spells, but i just can't figure out a way to make it work that either isn't dangerous enough, or just to dangerous for any of the players that want to play a wizard

Hmmmm

you could lower the spells per day by a few, and allow spellcasting past that but the caster gets 1 arcane taint per level of spell squared.

so, lets say i cast all of my available spells... oh noes!!

But wait!!! I can still cast more!! I cast fireball, but the greater infusion of magic (because i've already pulled up a bunch from my regular spells) casues some mutation. (9 points of taint)

the type of taint can depend on the type of spell.

mind-affecting: mental taint
physical: disfiguration
etc..

It souldn't be too hard, it all depends on how many spells you would take from teh class.

there are some rules to that effect on the Hypertextd20 site. Try under the variant rules for campaigns. Extensive and interesting, but just not the focus of my game.

MicroliteD20 has an interesting idea of spells costing hit points, 1 per level of spell. Maybe when a caster reached 0hp, they could incur taint on top of being knocked for a loop. Or perhaps have spell casting be a skill check, if they fail they gain taint.

That was i was trying to do, but i just can't come up with a system that i'm happy with

Well, do you want it to be relatively easy to become tainted, or just a risk in the back of the players minds? Say casting a spell requires the Use Magick skill, if they fail their skill check, they gain taint, or maybe they only gain taint on a botch roll of a natural 1.
What I'd consider doing would be is taking their ranks+stat modifier and have that be the minimum they could roll, so not only would they need to roll for the target difficulty, but also roll above their minimum skill level, lest they become tainted.
For example, the wizard has 5 ranks in Use Magic with a +2 Int modifier, that would mean he has to roll 7 or above to prevent gaining taint. So, to become more powerful, they'd need to beef up their Use Magick ranks, but at the same time their chance to incur taint also increases. How's that?
