Perhaps this has been thought of before, but if not, it might be a novel idea for a solo campaign. There would be two characters created at the beginning. One is for the PC, and the other for the DM to control as they see fit. The twist is that the DM and the PC switch roles throughout the storyline, where the DM now controls their character as a PC, and the former PC acts as DM controlling the other character.

I think that this could lead to some interesting story dynamics. Each person would pick up where the other left off, building off whats there already or even taking it in a whole new direction with a plot twist.

Character wise, the current PC would take the main focus, but the DM would use their character to enhance the experience for the PC while still being able to develop their character how they want.

I am very new to D&D and I currently have only one person to play with (they are as new as me) and i'm trying to think of some unique things to do with our campaigns. We will probably try a normal solo campaign first, but this might be interesting. Any thoughts advice or criticism is welcome! Thank you!

That's a very good idea, though I can see a few possible issues. First, the player might not like what you do with their original PC when you're controlling them. Also, they may not want to use the other character you created. Still, unique plan.

I'm currently running a solo campaign, and I let the player have a main PC. Sometimes he has allies, and he is allowed to control them in combat. As the campaign progresses, I may also allow him to control them in diplomatic or exploration situations as well.

Well I mean that each player would maintain control over their character. Just when they become the DM, they control their character sorta like an NPC then.
