I'm going to start running a game with a few friends*where the players will be crossing from Earth to another world, and then back later on.

In this game modern day Earth has an abundance of magic because it has had a long time to build up over the years (it hasn't been tapped in mass quantities in over a millenium.)

When the PCs return to earth and one casts a spell, what should happen?

Well, I think the effects should be obvious.

First of all, that particular spell rushes out of the players fingertips and is super effective and whatnot. He probably only needs to think about it to activate the spell. Silent stilled eschewed and whatnot.

All over the world, places with "real power" (see American Gods) begin spitting out things from another world. Occassionally, mothers give birth to monsters. And by the way, a "monster" isn't an elf or an orc or even a kobold, it's a basilisk, or a manticore which grows to its usual size fairly quickly.

Interesting ideas... I was thinking about making spells more powerful, but your first idea makes more sense.

As for the monster spawning, I'm not sure. The heroes will already have their hands full with the BBEG, and her forces, who reached Earth first.

Well the theory is, at least in this campaign setting, is that this is what happens to every world. It was once all one race, until the magic broke through and changed things. Putting in a few monsters would add variation to an all human world.

The magic bursts forth, as he said, and unleashes the floodgates. The magic in the air is almost palpable, and common people find they now have strange talents.

Is there a setting called Untapped Magic? This is a homebrew campaign that I have yet to even title. :P

I see what you're talking about, though. It would make things interesting, but this is supposed to be the final battle. The players have already spent a long time battling evil in the other realm, and now they need to travel back to Earth to combat the BBEG and co., who found the way back to Terra first.

... This is assuming that they don't take everything extremely off-course. I make my plot points flexible and obvious so that the players can go several different routes, but you never know what they can throw at you. :P

Edit: If I run the same setting, but later, I'll most likely use the stuff you have all suggested. Thanks for helping. :)

No, the hypothetical setting that you're coming up with.

Basically, i just made that up.
