Viking campain setting [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-10-07, 07:43 AM i was wondering if there were any viking campaign settings out there ? .... the reason why i am asking is because me and my friend are all icelanders..former vikings !!!!!!!!!! and i wanted to base our campain on the Viking areas of play.

03-10-07, 02:32 PM I have a book called "Viking Age", a d20 book published by Avalanche Press, Ltd. It is basically a a manual on playing d20 fantasy RPG in a Viking-type campaign. It is not a setting, there aren't any maps, places, etc. You can play it in the real world or a campaign of your own design. However, I don't think it is still in print; I got my copy a couple of years ago at Origins for $1 in a left-over bin. I like it, and have used some of it for a viking-like race in my RPG.
I'm sure there are more out thee, though. You might try searching for "Viking d20" or such.

03-11-07, 04:04 AM there is an old 2nd Ed sourcebook called Complete Viking's Handbook as well. I think at one point I also saw a campaign online but I can't remember where. If I see it I'll point you at it.

However it would be cool if a real viking like you were to put something together. There are a lot of things from that history and legend that would be really inspirational!

03-12-07, 08:41 PM I've been making one for a while now. I've built it off my own ideas and the 3.0 deities and demigods book. I'm not at all knowledgeable about these things beyond Beowulf and some legends I've read, so I'm sure there are some glaring mistakes. I've also just gone hog wild with the world.

I've also added a short story I wrote set there.

03-14-07, 01:49 PM Its certainly not a campaign setting as such, but Bernard Cornwell has a book series out about the dark ages. Its called the Saxon stories, focuses primarily on Alfred the Great, but with a very indepth and fair treatement of the Norse peoples.

His history is excellent and makes for a more enjoyable read than standard history texts for those who are looking to throw some Viking flavor into their campaign.

03-14-07, 02:10 PM I would second Tenadros's recemendation of the Cornwell books, his atention to detail and his research make the books well worth the read, heck i couldnt put down the series and await more.

thanks for the tips..but i mostly know all about it :D we learned it in school ;) .

I was thinking about making it in a fantasy world based on euorpe in the age 1000. The world is at terretorial war and ragnarok is apon the world. any other ideas ?

03-15-07, 09:43 PM I like the traditional Viking adventure idea of just jumping into a boat and sailing off to raid a village.

I wouldn't use DnD though. I would hunt down a copy of Monte Cook presents: Iron Heroes, and use that to make my campaign world.
