[Warning: not very fantastic.] The planet is similar to earth in size, orbit, and distance from its sun. The axis is perpendicular to its orbit; thus, no axial tilt. There are three major land masses: one at each pole and one circumventing the entire globe at the equator. This equatorial landmass ranges from 2000 miles to 8000 miles north to south. There are two major oceans, one in the north and one in the south. In the central landmass are several land bound seas--probably all with hypersalinity. What would the general climate be like? No seasons, but would how cool would the poles be? With no tilt, does the coriolis effect no longer cause the major storms and jet streams? I am thinking that the prevailing winds go north to south north of the equator and the opposite in the southern hemisphere, the landmass warming the air making it less dense as it moves inland. The two currents would converge near the equator and rise. What would the weather be like at the convergence? Where would the heaviest rain be and where would the deserts be? |

If anything with the major oceans 1 of north and 1 of south the weather would end up super-sized as there is nothing to slow that hurricane down. If there is no water access between the north and the south, well I don't know how that would be possible and still have land in the middle. The prevailing winds go north to south? What is the cause to make it do the opposite in the south? Again with these two air systems going directly at each other coming from different sides and going straight at each other I would again think that weather would be super-charged. |
| Tsochar11-03-07, 11:46 AM | The landmass layout sounds similar to the continents in the world of Onepiece. That isn't really any help, since the author only seldom mentions weather patterns, and then only when they are worth mentioning. How wide is your main landmass, on average? Does it go out ten degrees, thirty degrees, somewhere in-between? As for the poles, they probably wouldn't be any warmer or colder than here, since polar temperature is due to the curvature of the earth, not axial tilt. I'm no meteorologist, but unless one of the players is one, I wouldn't think the weather patterns would come into question. Personally, I just use the DMG's random generator to come up with weather, and even then I only do that when I feel like it. Most players, I think, would never ask a DM about the weather, and if he never describes it as raining, they wouldn't question that either. I'm one to talk, though; I'm currently inventing names for countries hundreds of miles from where my players currently are. |
