What does a high-power world look like? [Archive] - Wizards Community

This idea came to me from one of those Spartan threads.

Officially, core-ish-ly, the world is largely populated by low-level npcs with npc class levels. For example, most of an army is 1st or 2nd level warriors. BORING.

The idea came to me, what if most people by adulthood had five or six levels in a "PC Class", or PC-Worthy "NPC Classes" - Warriors become Fighters, Adepts become Wizards/Clerics/Druids/Sorcs/Archivists/Whatnot, Experts become Super Experts, and Magewrights and even Artifacers are fairly common.

And then magic was as common as Ebberon, but double-digit-level people were, while not abundant, not exactly uncommon, either.

But this distresses the whole paradigm! It, properly accounted for, would make for a widely different world than what's implied by "core rules".

The question then is ... what would that world be like? :)

Sounds like FR to me, to be honest.

It would look a lot like a fair bit of anime, such as Naruto. Most characters would start earlier in life, like at about age 10-11 simply because if they start at actual adulthood, they would seem to be quite stupid for the fact that they are just starting out.

Or you'd see level five being more of a starting level, unless people wanted to play kids.... though I wonder what they'd do, because most things below CR 6 or 7 or so would likely be kept well in check... ?

Good point, my players and I usually do not like starting at 1st level anyway. You do what they do at Hogwarts for experience. You go bully the members of other gangs.

A number of things would be different, and most important IMO is the increased availability of Teleport (assuming 7th level mages are much more common too). This spell will singlehandedly warp your world:
-trading: no need for trade routes and caravans. Anything virtually becomes readily available to everyone
-warfare: a few mages are able to effectively move an entire army across vast distances in no time.
-travel: no place is beyond reach, which means no place is exotic. Go there - now! Bob may live 100 miles from his nearest neighbour Jim. No problem, just teleport to Jim for a cup of tea!

Additionally, if everyone were high level there would be no plagues or illness, regular work is obsolete as magic replaces it (including farming), magic items would be abundant.

EDIT: Arg, for some reason I though Teleport was a 4th level spell. Well, the arguments still holds, as 9th level mages would be much more common than in a normal setting.

Heh. It's the B!tchun society all over again.

Saric has half a point: mechanically, this is what FR is like (every second village's sheriff is an Epic character!). Backgrounds-wise, however, FR completely fails at being consistant with that mechanical element.

Basically, if you pulled this off, it'd be like what FR should be - and a lot more like utopian science fiction than heroic fantasy (Clarke's Third Law, etc.).

I agree, it would be either unplayable or very unrealistic (which I hate). I like high magic and really fantastic, crazy stuff to happen, but always with logical consequences...
