I like the idea of incantations (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/incantations.htm) and would like to know if there is an online list of new ones.

I would also love a spellcasting class that was based on incantations (rituals...). Does anyone have any idea if such a class already exist and if not want to help me create one? Thank You.

The closest you'll find would probably be the Binder, using Pact Magic, from Tome of Magic. That would be my best suggestion. They share a similar flavor, but different mechanics.

1st edition cleric and druid spell lists are filled with spells that take days or weeks to cast--basically rituals. Ideas for incantations and balancing could come from there.

Also, real life incantations are centered around divination and healing--especially healing. I would suggest that a created class be able to perform ritual forms of existing divination and healing spells, possibly gaining them a level or two earlier to account for the extra effort necessary for performing the ritual.

After thinking about it, this seems like an NPC class--not very much fun to play, really.

:) Alright, I know about the binder (I have ToM) and although it is a great class I do think it is not exactly what I would want from the "ritualist" class. So lets make one!

Ritualist

The ritualist or shaman is a special type of spellcaster who uses rituals to cast more powerful spells than other spellcasters of his or her level.

I was thinking of mixing in some Epic Spelcasting mechanics. First develop a ritual, maybe without a cost, and than cast it. Both will take some skill checks to succeed.

O.k. You have 9 levels of rituals (0-level spells are not included),

HD: d4
Skillpoints: 2+int or 4 times this number at first level
Class skills:Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), Perform (Cha) and Spellcraft (Int).

Preparing a ritual takes time (around half an hour per ritual per level). Each ritual has components you need to use during preparation. These components can be found in a spell component pouch. During preparation you need to succeed on some skill checks. The kind of skills depends on the ritual. When you failed the skill check, you have failed to prepare it correctly and you can try so again, but you will have to start all over with preparing that Ritual. After you have prepared the ritual you can cast the ritual any time you want to in 24 hours. Casting the spell only takes you to succeed on a Spellcraft check. The DC for both checks are in the Rituals description. If you fail, you can try again next round.
