hi there, don't know if been done..!

1) Think very, very, very, very, very, very^1000 carefully about the invocations you will choose...

2) Beguiling influence will make your DM rage at 1st level! AND the Bard if he wanted to be #1 social guy...

 So some one correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that the eldrich blast had not limit to number of times per day it can be cast just like their invocations. Right? I was under the impression that they were broken.

No more so than a fighter with a sword, or a ranger with a whole swag of arrows.

4.- Shatter as spell like-ability is your best friend at low levels, break things first then break other things, then break some more, shoot later and ask questions AFTER

5.- Vitriolic Blast is cool.....clay golems don't....

6.- Retributive invisibility with a pair of wings and a good eldricht blast is like having a bigmac with a good coke and mcnuggets

A question actually, if you were within 30ft with a few levels of rogue, would you be able to get sneak attack damage added on to your Eldritch Blast, or any magic for that matter? Does that even work? :P
Dangaard

06-22-06, 02:30 AM
actually this is the advice i give to anyone i know who plays warlock: shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more, and when nothing else is moving try to ask a few questions or loot the bodies.

actually sneak attack does work with EB

Exactly ;)

No, they have no limit to number of times per day.
It's only broken if you lack the ability to actually playtest it without people misunderstanding the rules. The warlock is perfectly balanced. You only need to compare him to a melee class instead of a caster class.

A question actually, if you were within 30ft with a few levels of rogue, would you be able to get sneak attack damage added on to your Eldritch Blast, or any magic for that matter? Does that even work?
Yes, but only if the target is flat-footed. You cannot flank with Eldritch Blast, so getting sneak attack damage is harder. I recommend being invisible, with the invocation.

8) Hideous blow provokes an AoO, requires a MELEE non-touch attack roll, and doesn't multiple EB damage on a crit.

9) Hideous blow sucks

10) Warlock's Call sucks more......seriously just buy a couple scrolls

11) You can move AND shoot every round from level 1 to level 20, there will almost always be a better spot to be shooting from so move there

12) Use Magic Device is your best class ability, NOT the eldritch blast or invocations

13) Wizards are sissies, always ready actions to interrupt their spells with eldritch blast

14) "the bigger they are, the lower their Touch AC"
Ariath Ska'Vhor

06-22-06, 04:45 AM
(15) when your ranger friend tells you "try not to miss it, alright?" blast him in the face for thinking you will...

(16) blast him in the face anyway

(17) try doing it to him while he's sleeping, it'll be funnier that way
zae

06-22-06, 08:01 AM
8) Hideous blow provokes an AoO,

This depends on whether you adhere more to "Rules as Written" (which implies they do, by dint of not saying they are exempt from the standard rule) or the written intent of the creator (on the thread where people ask their many questions about it, he explicitly stated that it was his intention to not provoke with hideous blow).

So it depends on your DM. Still not a great invokation choice.

18) Your do NOT always have to be evil

19) Use half your money on magic items that with UMD you can USE!

6.- Retributive invisibility with a pair of wings and a good eldricht blast is like having a bigmac with a good coke and mcnuggetsSo, regular uses of this combination of invocations lead to obesity ?

Its not specific for warlocks but it works for just about everything. The 7 habits of highly effective pirates.

Rule 1: Pillage, then burn.

Rule 6: If violence wasn't your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.

Rule 8 - Mockery and derision have their place. Usually it's on the far side of the airlock
Rule 9 - A wealthy pirate is a healthy pirate. Buy goods at the cheapest price - preferably in negative amounts of money.
Rule 9: Never turn your back on an enemy.
Rule 10 - Cowardice is sometimes the better part of valor.
Rule 11: When in port for repairs, whatever you do, don't look like a pirate. You can't blow up bounty hunters as effectively when you're stuck in port with your ship undergoing repairs

Rule 12: A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head.

Rule 13: Do unto others

Rule 16 - Your name is in the mouth of others: Be sure it has teeth.

Rule 14: Life is a competition. So cheat as often as you need to.

Rule 15: Never pick a fight you're not sure you can win.

Rule 16: If you lose a fight, make sure you escape with your life.

Rule 17: Whenever you run from a fight, make sure the enemy can't pursue you.

Rule 18: Payback's a *****. Make her your *****.

Rule 27: Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.

Rule 28: Never hesitate to exploit the superstitions of others.

Rule 29: The Enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. No more, no less.

Rule 30: A little trust goes a long way, the less you use the further you'll go.

Rule 31: Doing unto others as they have done unto you is not good enough, to win an encounter you must do unto others BEFORE they can do unto you.

Rule 32: Never hesitate to exploit the superstitions of others.

Rule 34: Planning for failure makes success seem rewarding, but it also makes you unprepared.

Rule 35: "Speak softly and carry a big stick" works best when you use the stick first.

Rule 37: There is no over kill. There is only "Open fire" and "I need to reload!"

Rule 42: If you're going to betray someone, start by killing them. It'll save trouble later

Rule 57: No good deed goes unpunished, but many a bad one can prove very rewarding indeed.

Rule 75: Resort to violence before you need last resorts.

Rule 103: Truces are merely a game, the winner of which being who-ever restockpiles first.

So you guys don't think that being able to cast an unlimited stream of earthen grasps is overpowered? Also unlimited shatters, I mean they can do that at 1st lvl.
At first lvl they can beat anything other class 1v1 and I assume if you play them right they can keep beating anything at higher lvls.

20. walking up the walls at first level is both really cool and will both annoy the DM and all ennemies who will have a hell of a time hitting you while you snipe them out

21. Shattering the foe's ranged weapon from the ceiling also screws over your foes

22. warlock multiclasses beautifully with scout - free bonus dice and AC without losing attacks

23. Be a troublemaker:
I can hold off the ogres, but only if the elf dies first... no, wait the elf is my "friend". Definately the ogres first

24. Constantly gloat to your fellow party members how fun it is being unhittable while dealing more damage per round than most of the rest of them.

25. Free cohorts, always fun and so practical. I am sorry but it appears the king fully agrees with me. He will be giving me half the kingdom's treasure

34. You actually have play a class for a while before deciding that it is over/under powered. (see Korgil)

35. The intent of the guys who wrote the class isnt always that important to the guy who writes the FAQ (e.g. hideous blow)

36. Detect Magic at will only works well (read at all) if your DM knows how Detect Magic works (Just learned that recently as a matter of fact.)

37. Unlimited SLAs are so much easier to keep track of.

38. x/day SLAs really kinda suck most of the time.
zae

06-22-06, 04:43 PM
39. Detect Magic at will is wonderful when the DM forgets it isn't Identify-vision.

40. Eldritch Blast is ranged for a reason. Be where the violence isn't, put the violence where the enemy is.
Drascin

06-22-06, 04:47 PM
41- Always keep a scroll of assay resistance handy. All your offensive might is hurt by SR (be it the eldritch blast or UMD devices) and, unlike the wizard, you can use it :P

42- A wand of illusions (image tree) is more useful than you would think.

43- Read up the description of every magic item in existence. The ability to use them without any major screwups, and later create ANY one of them, is one of your main assets.

44- Phantasmal assailants is handy to wand-ify too. If you just get one through, it reduces the touch AC of an opponent, and their will and reflex saves will lower dramatically -allowing you to connect more of these just in case, use domination efects easily, or just bring out the plain ol' blast with an assured hit.

a few clairifications.
a: hideous blow does not provoke an attack of oppurnity, you need to red the book more.
b: eldrich blast does do double damage on a critical hit, any spell that needs an attack roll does double damage on a critical hit. look in front of the feats section to look up more about "weapon like" spells

a: warlock invocations are given a specific exception that they all provoke AoOs unlike normal SLAs, hideous blow does not mention itself as an exception to the exception it falls under

b: a normal eldritch blast does indeed double (20/x2) on a crit, but when used with hideous blow it does not since it is additional damage dice and not a fixed bonus (same way sneak attack dice don't double on a crit)

46. Remember that Flee the Scene does not break Invisibility.

47. The ability to fly at will is 1000 times better than walking walls.

48. Fell Flight is a must have for any Warlock. Having 24 hour three dimensional movement is like eliminating every melee attack they have, not to mention the ability to always be 2-3 inches OFF the ground which stops those pesky caltops and pressure plate traps and allows you to never worry about climbing things ever again.

49. Think, THEN shoot. But think first. Really.

Very true but with how few invocations a warlock gets and how few they can change over the course of their careers, some things are worth waiting for.

Additionally the warlock has a TON of great least invocations that can be very useful at level one and ALL through their careers.

I've played a warlock.... it was pretty broken, weather it was blasting out the doorknobs of doors to get through, or E-Blasting with mortal bane for 5D6 3/day at level 2 or the use of Beguiling Influence to have a higher bluff/intimidate mod than the bard at 5th (6 (BE)+9 (Ranks)+2 (Synergy)+4 (Ability+2 diplomat)=23+more for scrolls that boost CHA). And with the 20% miss chance from ranged and DR 1/Cold Iron... I was able to cut through most stuff with ease... even the RP encounters.
(6D6 3/day at level 5 is nice when it's back up is 3D6 infinite and you have Weapon focus in it...)
Also the detect magic for magical traps and items.
I like to view the warlock as the ultimate Swiss army knife, it might not be the best at combat or casting or RP encounters, but it's at least second best at all of them.

On that note more rules:

52: Don't forget, if you are evil mortal bane is your friend, especially if multi-classing or if you are at a low level (Below 8).

53: Remember; The ability to have an unlimited 20% miss chance is not only good, but it messes up the other casters and the guy with the spear.

54: Remember; your AC is less important than your invisibility.

55; Remember; you can call down the thunder, and reap the whirlwind, it just takes two rounds, until 12th level.

56; Remember; Your abilities are spell like abilities, which means that you can use the quicken SLA on them, and it is only beneficial.

57; The same goes for maximize and empower, and widen... etc. Spell Like ability feats.

58: Remember, two invocations are better than one (Especially when done in the same round)

yes, I did something similar in a munchkin tournament, I had a sorcerer cohort and between each fight you was able to carry as much buffs as you wanted always that lasted more than 4 hours (so people only could use long duration buffers), I went into battle with almost 50 spells, including things like 7 mage armors, 3 greater magical weapon, 3 keen weapon 5 empowered bull str (3.0) etc.

So basically he's saying:
"Yes, it does. However, it shouldn't, so we're errataing it."

How exactly does that contradict my point of view? As written in Complete Arcane, which is what matters, if no errata has been issues, it provokes an AoO. And it shouldn't, and the Sage understands that.

I should have been clearer before. here you need to look at the wording very carefully. under the full description it says you make a single MELEE attack as a standard action (which of it's self never provokes an attack of oppurtunity. if you hit your target is affected AS IF struck by your eldrich blast. you are channeling arcane energy into your Melee weapon,
just like the duskblades (Players Handbook 2) Arcane Channeling abality only without the spells per day limit, Which specifically states that is does not provoke an attack of oppurnity.

60: Skill focus: UMD is your best friend.

61: Eldritch Blast Sucks at higher levels. Use scrolls and wands and invocations at higher levels to make up for it.

62: Eldritch Doom + Quickened Flee the Scene = HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Die *****.

63: Concentration is your best friend (After UMD.)

63a: So is Skill Focus: Concentration.

64: Hideous Blow Blows once enemies start getting respectable ACs. You'll hit more often with a Frightful Blast.

65: Chilling Tentacles is just like Evard's Black Tentacles. NO SPELL RESISTANCE.

66: The invocation that summons a swarm isn't affected by Spell Ressitance either. Nor is Earthen Grasp.

67: YOU CAN HEAL YOUR FRIENDS USING USE MAGIC DEVICE. SO GET A WAND OR FOUR AND STAY CLOSE TO THE CLERIC.

68: Chaotic Neutral characters can be fiercly loyal to their friends, but still chaotic neutral.

69: I REPEAT, you can heal with UMD. Wands and scrolls are your friend.

70: You can't take ten when crafting with UMD. Bummer.

But it doesn't mention arcane channeling. It says you attack the enemy, as part of casting the invocation. You draw an AoO from casting/using a SLA.

E-Blasting with mortal bane for 5D6 3/day at level 2

??? The most it would do at 2nd Level is 3dg 1d6 from warlock levels and 2d6 from mortal bane. Other than that it is a great combo and the feat fits perfectly withthe flavour of the class. If you take the feat: a must is a few ranks in knowledge skills. All Non-mortals fall into the K:Arcana, K:Religion and K:Planes. There are times when suppressing Mortalbane is useful.

As to the stacking of multipul spells, it's multipul effects that are there but don't stack, not spells.

I thought I read a WotC post that said Hideous Blow does provoke AoO because you still must cast the spell as part of the action. The benifit of the feat was to apply weapon damage to the attack. Still, with a good concentration it doesn't matter. Using a ranged attack in melee is not the equivilant of a first level ability. The closest thing requires several levels of a PrC. I would like to be proven wrong on this (ie. link to official ruling).

Other than that here are some things more on topic:

71: An ally with the Spellfire wielder feat is you best friend.

72: You can qualify for Frightful Presence (dracomnicom) at 6th level. Frightful Blasts might not stack, but that FP does with AoE to boot.

73: Ability Focus: Eldritch Blast ups the DC on your Essence invocations AND AoE Blast shape Invocations.

74: Just because you have Fell Flight doesn't meanyou don't need a mount. Especially if that mount is a Magebred Carver (EbCS) trained for war!
vardock

06-26-06, 12:02 PM
But it doesn't mention arcane channeling. It says you attack the enemy, as part of casting the invocation. You draw an AoO from casting/using a SLA.

Again you did not check the complete description. you never actually cast it (in a sense). besides you did not check the parts in bold "AS IF HIT BY AN ELDRICH BLAST ", you are effectively given the Arcane channeling abality, which was printed at a later date, which means it over rules past stuff. and Anything involving a Melee attack NEVER provokes AoO
The_Newborn

06-26-06, 07:37 PM
Anything involving a Melee attack NEVER provokes AoO

Hideous blow is still a warlock invocation (spell-like ability) so using it would still provoke an AoO. Another way of looking at it is that Hideous Blow modifies Eldritch Blast to:

Casting Time: 1 swift action
Effect: Charges 1 melee weapon with eldritch energy
Duration: 1 round

Another problem is that Hideous Blow is always a standard action,so you can't use it as part of a full attack. Also be nice to use it with a ranged weapon.
JadeSpider9643

75. Players will never stop arguing about how hideous blow actually works even when it's clearly a horrible invocation no matter which side is right.

76. Everyone else is just jealous of your Cold Iron damage reduction

Seriously guys, stop ruining one of the better 1001 threads with pointless bickering....go start a new thread for that.
Hariman

06-26-06, 10:27 PM
I thought this thread was " 1001 things to remember as a Warlock" not "1001 argumentative posts about hideous blow"

77: Always keep your distance from the enemy. You ARE NOT a melee character. You never will be either.

78: Going Prone is a good thing if the enemy is just peppering you from a distance. Or if the enemy can't reach you for some reason. There's no restriction on casting while prone.

79: Whether or not Hideous Blow provokes an attack of oppurtunity doesn't matter. It's still going to get less and less useful as you level. Swap it out at 6th level. Better yet, just don't take it.

80: I repeat, again; UMD is your best friend. Keep it maxed and take Skill Focus: UMD if you can.

81: Carry a spell component pouch and a spellbook at all times. This will confuse suspicious busybodies.

82: DON'T FORGET: Warlocks are BORN because of an incident or arcane connection to something before they were born. Going down the "I made a deal with this evil guy for power" is the easy way out. It also gives your DM fertile soil for plot devices that you will probably get bored with because you've heard them before.

Fey touched a few generations ago is much more fun.
Todd

06-27-06, 10:16 AM
I am all over the previous UMD is your best friend posts. Clearly this is the #1 command for a Warlock. Max out that UMD. The blast is nice and the other invocations can be super useful but UMD is where the real action is at especially at higher levels.

83. Thou shall not take a PrC for the Warlock prior to 12th level. PrCs can offer some nifty stuff ranging from sneak attack to expanded skills to extra powers. However I have yet to see a PrC that benefits a Warlock even half as much as Imbue Item does at the higher levels. So take whatever PrCs catch your fancy but not until you have Imbue Item!

84. Thou can make magic ... so take advantage of it! In the long run a feat like Craft Contingent Spell is going to give you a lot more mileage than yet another thing to bump your blast up like Empower SLA. Make sure that your Warlock can craft either Contingent Spells, Scrolls, or Staves by 12th level ... or, better yet, all three by 15th. Each one has advantages and disadvantages, but they all allow you to make use of spells which can be far more powerful than any of your native invocations. Craft Wondrous Item can be taken as early as 3rd level and can be handy even then.

85: Buy a Chasuble of Fell Power and a Freater Chasuble of Fell Power AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

86: If you can't BUY either of the Chasubles, CRAFT THEM. Craft Condrous Item is the perfect feat to do that. AND you can craft a few other items based on your invocations.

87: A Warlock's Scepter doesn't hurt either. Hence the recommendation of Craft Rods and Staves.

88: Never burn more than 3 charges at a time from a Warlock's Scepter. Burning 5 charges to get 4d6 of extra damage is a waste. 3 charges for 3d6 is the upper limit. Ten 4d6 boosts isn't as good as 16 3d6 boosts and 1 2d6 boost to your eldritch blasts.

89: Fell Flight is good, but keep a potion or scroll of Fly handy to get out of tight situations faster.

90: Don't forget to take at least one Blast Shape invocation at higher levels to prevent "Globe of Invulnerability" disasters involving your eldritch blasts.

and Anything involving a Melee attack NEVER provokes AoO
Except for, oh, grapple. And disarm. And trip. And unarmed attacks.

Yep, that's not even remotely a rule.

how do you do the meta feats with Eb because it says that the EB is effective spell of half your level max 9 and 18lvl. has there been errata on the subject?

91.) Leveling up into a Wild Mage can do wonders to your DM's sanity! (Living Rod of Wonder!!!)

how do you do the meta feats with Eb because it says that the EB is effective spell of half your level max 9 and 18lvl. has there been errata on the subject?

Yes it has.

Page 7: Eldritch Blast
Second paragraph of the Eldritch Blast ability
description:
Change “An eldritch blast is the equivalent of a spell
whose level is equal to one-half the warlock’s class
level (round down), with a minimum spell level of 1st
and a maximum of 9th when the warlock reaches 18th
level or higher” to “An eldritch blast is the equivalent
of a 1st-level spell. If you apply a blast shape or eldritch
essence invocation to your eldritch blast (see page 130),
your eldritch blast uses the level equivalent of the shape
or essence.”
Any other references to eldritch blast being something
other than the equivalent of a 1st-level spell should be
disregarded.
Any other references claiming that eldritch blast is not
an invocation should be disregarded.
A warlock can use eldritch blast at will.

Warlocks can always get free food, free room and board, free favors at the brothel, free passage through the forest, free adventuring gear, simply because he's a Charming dude :)

Once you get it, chilling tentacles is your best friend (combined with fell flight)

Quicken SLA feat when applied to a lot of your non-EB invocations can produce simply delightful results, like "oh crap im being fireballed, well, i need my Dark One's Own Luck on my reflex right now, not fortitude, *switch*" or "lots of incoming ranged attacks, nuts, quickened darkness i go poof!" etc..

Ask your dm if you can homebrew some more metamagic SLA feats to use, like say, Split-Ray, Twin, Energy Substitution and Admixture, Extend (for the ones that don't last 24 hours), Repeat, Explosive, Transdimensional, Consecrate (for you good boys out there), or Disguise.

Magic items of all varieties are you friend because you CAN use them, and you should :)

Always remember that enemy spellcasters are your best targets to mess up when they try to cast spells or use magic items :)

Never ever trust a paladin, even if you are a good boy

Make friends with your cleric or druid partymate on a first name basis. You'll be covering eachothers backs a lot.

When in doubt, turtleturret!

Your new nickname is "The Six Second Wonder"

Stack your buff invocations over and over before you go to bed (about 20 times each). So you'll have lots of them running all night and all day tomorrow. (makes it hard to dispel your buffs; yes sour dms this is legal, its no different than casting several persistant spell buffs of the same type on yourself for dispelling prevention, and one antimagic field suppresses them all)

If any of your party members refer to you as a warlock in character (Roleplaying) to lawful-neutral or good npcs, remember to have a private chat with them later when you can get them alone, and charm..er.. i mean explain to them why that was a bad idea.

Buy a possom pouch as soon as possible, and hide your best tiny valuables in it. Warlocks are known to be harbingers of bad luck or harsh times.

A good idea is to have a staff of project image. (I think) You can chuck your EB out of it and people wont be the wiser until they try to nuke you :)

if you rolled bad on initiative, but you're invisible, it's not a terrible idea to spend your first round refocusing. you'll still be invisible round 2, and you get to go first from now on :)

For RP'ing effects, remember that you can control the CL of your EB, so if you only want to do 1d6 damage you can :) Like say scratching your name into solid stone, 6 seconds per letter at a time, or similar messages.

Pick up the feat Craft Construct, and make yourself a homonculus. Never miss an adventuring opportunity again, AND still make that awesome magic item!

No matter how evil it may be at the time, kill every single koblod you come across. They have potential to become very very powerful and uncontrollable.

Consequently, no matter how evil it may be at the time, kill every single Elf Artificer you come across. They have potential to become all-knowing very soon.

If an assassin suddenly joins your party, be very afraid. You are the most likely target of his blade, even more than the cleric or paladin.

When facing an antimagic field opponent, keep in mind one thing: Wands of the Orb spells from the CA are your friend.

You are wrong.

113. Chilling Tentacles + a circular Wall of Perilous Flame = any enemies in the area who can't get away getting burned, frozen and beaten every round.

114. If, by 6th level, you do not have an invocation that will raise the level of your Eldritch Blast to at least 4th level, a Lesser Globe of Invulnerability will stop every Eldritch Blast you throw until you are at lest 8th level.

115. If your opponent can't see invisible crreatures, they are denied any Dex bonus to AC when you are under the effect of Walk Unseen or Retributive Invisibility (taking a little bit more off their Touch AC :D ).

116. Since Flee the Scene works like Dimension Door, be sure to use any Move actions you can/want to/need to BEFORE invoking it, because you won't be able to after you invoke it.

117. Imbue Item only allows you to replace a required spell with a Use Magic Device check when crafting a magic item; it does not allow you to replace a required race, alignment, class feature, feat, or skill.
