I don't know if anyone's done this kind of thread before or not, so I decided to start it... Anyways, certain classes probably wouldn't work out for onbe character... Here's a few example to start things off...

1. Barb/Bard: Just imagine the barbarian, "Kronk" (no, not Kronk from Emperor's New Groove...), saying something like, "Wait! Kronk want play music now!", and pulling out an instrument... On the plus side, they do make good drummers...

2. Barb/Wiz: Ok, a class that can't read combined with a class relying entirely upon a spellbook... "Hey, Kronk, what are you doing?" "Kronk read magic book" "Ummm, it's upside down..."

If anyone can come up with more, just add them...

For a while, a paladin/rogue multiclass used to strike me as incongruous, because of the whole "thief + backstab" holdover from 2ed and the negative connotation it carried along with it. But once you get used to the idea that sneak attack is simply hitting a foe where it hurts more (not at all unlike a normal critical), and there is nothing underhanded about it...:)

A rogue/knight combination seems a bit weird (to me at least), but nothing in the mechanics expressly forbids such a combination (it can still sneak attack via flanking).

If you take the Savage Bard varient in UA, this is actually a really great combo. ;)

I think the Rage Mage would disagree with your assessment. :p

The thing, no matter how absurd the combination is, I often find that the build is more often than not supported by the rules.

It's not nonsensical combinations, just unusual and in my book a guy who worships dragons and is trained to kill them earns a double take.

Bardarian (bard/barbarian) doesn't realize that they do magic and is likely to split your scalp if you try to convince him that he does.

sorcerer/wizard - "wait you can't use that wand it is on your restricted list" "not for my sorcerer class  "

cleric/druid - CoDizllax2 right! right? nevermind.

monk/druid - "did you see that, the bear slapped him around and then bit his arm off, it was cool stuff!"

bard/wizard - "hey I know stuff!"

bard/druid/mystic theurge - :looloo: (yeah I played this once, I've screwed the mind of the guy who was DMing when it comes to bard and druid spells  )

Once you take a level of a class that isn't illiterate, a barbarian gains the ability to read. Thus, a barbarian/wizard or barbarian/archivist is feasible.

A rogue/knight combination seems a bit weird (to me at least), but nothing in the mechanics expressly forbids such a combination (it can still sneak attack via flanking).

A knight does not gain a bonus on attack rolls when flanking. You still confer the benefit of a flanking position to an ally, but you forgo your own +2 bonus on attack rolls. You can keep your +2 bonus, but doing so violates your knight's code.
A knight never strikes a flat-footed opponent. Instead, you allow your foe to ready himself before attacking.
I think it's safe to rule that a sneak attack from a flanking position is an even worse breach of knightly protocol (if you CAN sneak attack without the flanking bonus - you have to catch your opponent off-guard to do it), and striking a flat-footed opponent is a no-no. So your knight/rogue CAN exist, if he doesn't mind not having any knight's challenges ever. Also, all those armor-related abilities your knight half gets? Useless, because you lose your rogue powers if you wear any more than light armor. Even carrying a shield is illegal.

I disagree.

The knight's code is very explicit about what the knight can and cannot do. There are no gray areas - everything is clearly spelled out in black and white. He is only barred from benefiting from the attack roll bonus from flanking and attacking flat-footed opponents, nothing more. However, he is still treated as flanking for all other purposes. This is consistent with his entry in the PHB2, which does not say that he cannot sneak attack.

Plus, he is even explicitly allowed to help others get their flanking position, so clearly, there is a very clear line delineating the limits to which he is expected to "play fair". After all, you don't expect him to fight with just 1 hand if his foe is facing a similar handicap, do you? Well, you could, but it is not required by the rules.

For the sake of rp, you are free to declare that it is "unknightly" to sneak attack, but a knight would not be penalized for not adhering to that standard.:)

I am not sure what you mean by not having any knight challenges.

I can easily opt to stick to light armour (though I admit the MAD from doing so is ungainly). Or just wear full plate and suck up the penalties. I only lose evasion - so it is not really such a big deal. I don't understand the part about shields, since evasion works even when the rogue is using a shield (he is only required to wear light or no armour).

Or is there something I am missing?:P

Barbarian/Monk ??

I've actually seen that combo. A player had a half-orc monk for 3 or 4 levels then stopped being lawful went barbarian. I am think he was working on a PrC (reaping mauler maybe). That is one thing I think is a screw against paladins. Monks can change their alignment and don't loose there abilities (they just can't be monks again).

Love the shadow caster/favored soul.

As for swashbuckler/barbarian, try the elven courtblade. It's two-handed and finessable. Seems perfect for the concept.

Druid/alienist. You worship nature but seek power through its perversions. Mechanically sounder with that feat to use CHA for druid spells from the OotS site.

Barbarian/spellthief. We all know and love the barbarian stereotype. When did he go rogue and learn how to steal magic?

Druid/spellthief. Arcane magic is vile and unnatural. I must stop it, even at the cost of my soul.

First of all, a lot of these "strange multiclass combinations" seem more like "strange gestalt combinations," which might or might not be in the spirit of the thread. Most of them would not be feasible in a multiclassed build.

First off, paladin/assassin is just like paladin/barbarian - impossible due to alignment requirements. Paladin/slayer of Domiel (I think that's what it's called, the assassin PrC from BoED), however, is not, and is pretty unusual.

Second, barbarian/monk is also impossible. This thread is about unusual multiclass combinations, not impossible ones. Try barbarian/battledancer (Dragon Magazine Compendium) instead. The grace that the battledancer focuses on is also at odds with the brute force of the barbarian.

Thirdly, yes, knights are not prevented from attacking foes denied Dexterity bonus, but the only way to do that without making them flat-footed is to tie them up or otherwise render them helpless first. And - while not RAW - almost any intelligent DMs will rule that if attacking flat-footed targets is against the knight's code - which is based on fair play and chivalry - sneak attacking or attacking a helpless foe is also against the knight's code.

A knight/sorcerer would be a strange multiclass/gestalt, though, and NOT against the knight's code...

And as sor that "take every base class in every book" build above, we actually had a ranger/barbarian/fighter/wizard/rogue in one campaign I was in. And with all those classes, there is no multiclass XP penalty, because all of them are within 2 levels of each other...
pres_man

06-21-07, 02:12 PM
Right it should be ex-barb/monk or barb/ex-monk or ex-pal/assassin. It is possible to mix the classes, but you have to be an ex-something, which may mean a loss of some abilites or not depending on the class that is the ex-.

My personal favorite, which has not been brought up yet, is Artificer/Barbarian.

A/B: It took me almost a week, but I have constructed a device capable of flying us into the castle.
Player 2: Great.
A/B: That, or it's edible. Let me check. *gulp*
Player 2: But... the ambush...
A/B: That wasn't edible! How dare you let me eat my Invention. MARIUS SMASH!

Such a conflicted character.

Once you take a level of a class that isn't illiterate, a barbarian gains the ability to read. Thus, a barbarian/wizard or barbarian/archivist is feasible.

The Knight says you don't get the +2 bonus from flanking... You're still flanking though.

A samurai/ninja... I don't know about in D&D, but historically, in feudal Japan, they were enemies...

Not to sound too sagacious, but ninja were actually samurai who were exceptionally suited for stealth, and because of their suitability, asked to do stealth missions for their lords. heretic666 has an array of handy links for that kind of knowledge in his signature.

Cleric of Pelor/Dread Necromancer has got to be a weird combo. You make the world safe from undead by raising every potential undead in the realm and then destroy them.

I actually used that for a low-profile villain. He had a great day job.

Here's a couple:

I don't know if anyone's done this kind of thread before or not, so I decided to start it... Anyways, certain classes probably wouldn't work out for onbe character... Here's a few example to start things off...

1. Barb/Bard: Just imagine the barbarian, "Kronk" (no, not Kronk from Emperor's New Groove...), saying something like, "Wait! Kronk want play music now!", and pulling out an instrument... On the plus side, they do make good drummers...

I've come up with the Bardbarian before. It was a Barbarian with a few ranks in Perform. If anyone complained about his music, he raged.

A samurai/ninja... I don't know about in D&D, but historically, in feudal Japan, they were enemies...

Or a Paladin/Necromancer... Animate Dead, Destroy Undead... HOURS of fun... lol.

Only in comics did they hate each other as a rule, in real life it is much less clear... Samurai is a social class and many from the Samurai class - even women - were also ninja. This may happen if a Samurai clan were not in favor with the Dyimo and were living off the land for a while... or you may be a ronin that became ninja. Of course, a samurai clan that was in favor and was also ninja was great for spying and assassinations…

Though he/she/it'd have to be CN or NG - not quite the CG that makes a really really real hippie.

How about Barbarian Archivist? :D
"What do you mean the Head Librarian can't read?"

Dude, you've never heard of Conan the Librarian?

Druid/alienist. You worship nature but seek power through its perversions. Mechanically sounder with that feat to use CHA for druid spells from the OotS site.

As my mother observed, if something exists, isn't it, by definition, part of Nature?
Clearly, this is simply an enlightened character who has moved past the provincial attitudes of others and sees the Big Picture.

I'm reminded a little of an idea I had for something I tentatively refer to as "the Sphere Magus": somewhere between the Druid and the Astrologer, the Sphere Magus reveres and draws power from the planetary bodies of his/her/its local solar system (though mechanically, I sort of envisioned its powers as being sort of a missing link amongst clerical domains, soulmelds, and pact magic).

My party has quite a few of these.

5 Barbarian/ 1 Bard /2 Dragon Disciple Orc named Ogrim

The bard is because he wants to be a dragon disciple. He can't use spells (cha 6, wis 8) and bard gives more hitpoints.

3 Cleric/ 3 Wizard/ 2 Mystic Theurge

Whoo, its Xanaphia! She spends all her skill points on Knowledge (chickens) and more languages. At level 8 she speaks 7 languages. She became a cleric to learn Celestial, after being a wizard to get a chicken familiar.

8 Druid
He only ever prepares 4 spells. Flame Strike, Produce Flame, Call Fire (call lightning with fire damage), and Produce Water (occasionally the fires he makes are too big.

From Complete Arcane, he changed his animal companion to a small fire elemental.

This is one example of messing around with the multiclassing rules:
1 Bard/ 1 Cleric/ 1 Druid/ I Monk/ 1 Paladin/ 1 Sorcerer/ 1 Wizard.

+14 base will save. Pretty good for level 7.

Monk/Swashbuckler... Jackie Chan!

Druid/Archivist.... The Crocodile Hunter

Druid/Loremaster... My 8th-grade biology teacher

Back in 1st ed. I had a gnome named Theric Cleif the Cleric/Thief, who was actually a decent character despite the comedy value...
Last year I ressurected the idea as a human who started out as a stealthy barbarian before finding his faith in Olidammara and runs circles around people acting as a combat medic sneak-attacking with one hand and healing with the other.

Hmm, a Favored Soul of Pelor / Warlock tossing around bolts of golden yellow darkness would be interesting... :D
