Are you a sanctimonious prat, a do-gooder, a holy avenger? Personally, I've always felt that a big part of being a Paladin is having a massive ego, but I can see that others might differ. Hell, some might even think that a paladin would be a fun drinkng companion. You never know.

I find that the really dedicated, moral people I know are to busy actually doing good things to take their goodness too seriously. Also, it seems more likely that someone humble and funny would have a charisma of 18 (or whatever) than someone who's saying things like "Justice is my sword, and truth my armor!" and similarly cheesy self-righteous stuff. Some paladin lines: "Look... they've beaten a bunch of innocents up and tied them up in our sight to lure us in and try a rescue. Obviously a trap. Let's charge in!" "I like to think of myself as a healer, spiritual guide, counselor, and advocate of the oppressed, but mostly I just end up sticking sharp pieces of metal into people, taking their stuff, and calling it a day." "The gods are my allies, but justice is my master. If Heironeus were to fall into evil, his clerics would follow him, but his paladins would not. Urthred 02-13-06, 10:18 PM	These are great ones so far! as for your question on what kind of paladin role i was thinking about i was going for a more humorus most of the time one but was dead serious holy avenger type in battle or around Evil {which i sadly seem to run into alot.(stinking theiven rouges )}. but as some of you seem to have some interesting ones outside of that feel free to post any you think are interesting. PS. if it matters the god was changed to pelor in the final draft of the character.

Half Celestial and Half Dragon are templates, not races, and Kord is CG, not LG. Sorry for going off-topic, but that was bugging me.

That's very neutral - from the fantasy-genetic point of view. It is most easy to ignore, that this is totally illogical. And while I know of the rule, that clerics have to be within one alignment-step of thier god, I don't know of such a rule for Clerics. At least in the core rules, the Forgotten realms setting explicitly states, that there it is not that way and every divine caster (that want's to divinely cast) has to be within one step (with 1 or 2 exceptions). Since he is praising Kord (and not ...who would that be? Uthgar?) he is probably a Greyhawk Character

Dwarven Pali-type in a game without paladins had just gone through with a scheme thought up by a couple gnomes, in which they had to try to sell a few of the other characters as slaves to try and get a special key. The guy they were selling them to ended up undressing two of the fems and groping them. After the fighting was done and the PCs had won the dwarf goes over to yell at the gnomes "If you EVER do anything so brash and stupid again I'll knock yer heads together!... but on the other hand it was a very nice fight and I got to kill the bad guy... thanks!!" Same dwarf to a demonic looking thing that just appeared "Look... I don't want to fight you, you don't want to fight me. Just tell me what you want and we can go our seperate ways." Demon: "Your soul!" Dwarf: "Oh... is that all... CHARGE!!" At which point he misses the demon who smacks him and knocks him to 0 HP. That was a fun series of events that I wont go into...
Urthred 02-14-06, 06:12 PM	As to Novacat's question about my character yes they are templates but this is a game and my DM happens to be very open to new things if you want to blame someody bring it up with him. As to explain it in game senario he is mostly celestial and half dragon if you want to get technical their might be some human blood in their but it doesnt really apply it would be some 1/100 of a percent. to explain the alginment the god just has to be good not lawful good the paladin himself must be lawful (such as in fallowing the gods divine commands) and keep to the paladins code. (oh and the whole one axis off thing does apply here)

Solar: "Boss, they are lawful, they need strikter orders. Somethink like 'Be truthful and relieable, don't ally yourself with evil beings and spend 1/10 your income to church or charity." Kord: "Hm, if they fall from their alignment and loose their powers when I don't tell them, to do that, then I better do. Okay, proclaim the stuff you just said ... bet leave out the charity option. I want the money to train some more holy berzerkers."
moomooacow 02-14-06, 09:33 PM	Seriously, who the :censored: would talk like that, noone. "I am the light <insert stupid verb and clause>" is all just a bunch of crap. A true Paladin doesn't speak, he let's his Smite Evil do the talking. I think adding a maxim to your character would be good for RP purposes, but those Paladin sayings just cheapen up and degrade the game and the class. Lead through your actions, not you assanine sayings. Why must people claim that they speak in such a ridiculous way? If I were a Paladin and I just slayed an evil demon I would not be an egotistical deuchebag, that would be a BlackGuard. A true Paladin is self-effacing and doesn't pull all of that "light" ********. He either goes and says "I thank Palor for granting me the strength and will to slay him" or he would go around complimenting his friends and singing their praises, not going on about how much he kicked ass.

Okay, now you might probably say, that real demons are not affected by such minor talking but then I say ... no, this would be to easy. ;) Hey, actually groups might like this style of game. I should think about beginning to require similar phrases from clerics, paladins etc, in any case when they turn undead, or at various spells (that means, I will require it from the players, too). In the same line, wizards will have to learn pseudo-(latin/draconic/netheril).

I wish i could draw a venn diagram to point out the thought error here, but i think you'll figure it out eventually. a comparable theorem. some good people use poison all palaidns are good therefore, some paladins use poison see the problem? I suppose some gorups might, but no one I know. the occasional dramatic line is fine, but making people recite a prayer every single time they turn undead or cast a spell would get old REALLY fast. it would also slow down the game, and, if anyhting, make it harder to take the character's faith seriously.

Majick 02-15-06, 07:05 PM	I once played an old wartorn paladin (starting at lvl 12) who'd had that many instances in which he could have lost his faith he'd simply become really freakin' bitter and cinical (but was of course, still lawful good). Keeping in mind of course he had a very strict way of doing things and would rant like a drill sergent when it didn't go as planned Heres some of the more classic lines: PC cleric: do you not hold your faith to your heart like a shield? Me: What in the damnable abyss are you yabbering on about now, ya cloth wearing Pelor fanboy? PC cleric: You don't sound very much like a Paladin to me! Me: So by the same respect you don't sound much like a self-rightous tool? Dwarven Bard: I shall sing and bring forth the power of music! Me: Were here to battle not make em run home screamin of shattered ear drums Halfling Rogue: Perhaps i could 'obtain' the item for us from the count, then nobady would have to die Me(after a long pause): You just might if i hear that again ya stumpy little purse cutter I purpossly made the character to be a jerk, but still be lawful good. He'd help someone at a moments notice, but then yell at them for being so foolish! This character was actually created because a friend of mine said it would be impossible to make a non-friendly paladin
red_scare87 02-15-06, 07:21 PM	Fuzzy_Logic - Your logic is...fuzzy actually. There is a big difference between speaking dramatically and using poison from a Paladin's standpoint. Let's assume that lawful characters are prone to dramatic speeches, so the logic that since ALL Paladins are lawful that some of them might speak dramatically is quite valid. Your counter-example is a poor one because using poison isn't evil, it's chaotic. The reason Paladin's don't use poison isn't because it's not good, it's because it's underhanded. I'll break it down for you: Speaking Dramatically can be lawful (let's just say this is true for the sake of argument) and is not evil Paladins are Lawful Good So, Paladins are prone to speaking dramatically Poison is NOT lawful and is not inherently evil Paladins are Lawful Good So, Paladins cannot use poison because it is unlawful As you can see, Speaking Dramatically and poison are two different issues. If you provide a better example than poison, maybe you'll convince me that you're right...maybe...
