I've never had a character with any sort of animal companion so please be gentle.

In the DMG it basically says that a mount should be no less than 4 levels lower, or 3 if the mount is flying.

A fiendish horse is CR3 and a nightmare is CR5. Am I just figuring it wrong that it should be as easy as treating the Paladin's level as two levels lower for determining bonuses to the mount?

If I remember right, mechanically, you're right but

What kind of paladin has a nightmare:confused:  ???

Or for that matter what kind of nightmare would want to be a paladin's mount:confused:  ???

I can understand a blackguard having a nightmare as his fiendish companion/mount

But a paladin....

Fallen Paladin...into Blackguard.

Sorry, didn't think I needed to mention that.

Ah, I think the Guide to Faerun had a similar character - Ex-Paladin/Blackguard with a Nightmare mount. If you have it, check it out for details - but I think mechanically you have it right.

Had a Paladin with a Succubus mount. Fallen Paladin, that is.

Doesn't that belong on the Mature boards... oh, that's not what you meant.

Certainly an intersting concept :plotting:
