Ok, its been years since I read it but I recall rules for 1st level multiclassing in one of the core books. I have a concept I want to roleplay where this would be a big help, but now that it would be useful I can't seem to find it.

Anybody who knows what I'm talking about and could tell me where to find it I would be most appreciative. Maybe I'm remembering something from the 3.0 phb?

At any rate I'll keep a weather eye on the horizon and keep flipping through my books. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.

I think it's in Unearthed Arcana, as Apprentice levels or something. Look for alternate character options.

Unearthed Arcana gestalt characters, here (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/unearthedGestalt.html).

In this high-powered campaign variant, characters essentially take two classes at every level, choosing the best aspects of each. The process is similar to multiclassing, except that characters gain the full benefits of each class at each level. if the two classes you choose have aspects that overlap (such as Hit Dice, attack progression, saves, and class features common to more than one class), you choose the better aspect. The gestalt character retains all aspects that don’t overlap.

No this wasn't gestalt, it allowed you to have some, but not all, elements of two classes at first level, until you gained enough experience and attained 2nd level. At which point you had all the elements of a character with one level in each class, after this point the character advanced normally.

sounds 2.0-ish

I remember this. I am quite sure it was in one of the 3.0 books, the DMG or PHB I think.

It was the 3.0 DMG, but I forget where. Probably in the chapter with the prestige classes.

Found it! 3.0 DMG pg 40.

If I still had mine I would go look it up. Anyone know if it is in a SRD somewhere?

It's in the 3.0e DMG. It is unfortunate that they dropped it.

It is unfortunate that they dropped it. It was handy for new players who wanted to try out aspects of two classes right away and also was good for meeting specific character concepts that wouldn't make as much sense otherwise (say, a part-time performer and problem solver: a rogue/bard apprentice meets this concept best).
