| MakoPoser03-29-04, 03:18 PM | What would be the best combination of 0 and 1st level spells for a first level Sorcerer? And why? Thank you. PS. Sorry if this topic has already been visited, I did a search but was unable to word it properly. |
| MoonFang03-29-04, 03:40 PM | I shall give you this, have a high charisma and dexterity, point blank/prescise shot, and two spells I use in the RPG that causes the DMs to curse me. Ray of Enfeeblement and Magic Missle. The ray to turn fighters into cowards, and magic missles to strike from a distance. |
| ksbsnowowl03-29-04, 03:43 PM | It's 3.0, but here is the 3.0 deffinitive sorcerer spell thread summary (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=169354&%20highlight=sorcerer+AND+spell+AND+thre ad+<br%20/>AND+summary) These are my favorite 1st level spells: Color Spray Shield Grease Magic Missile True Strike |
| Darth K'Trava03-29-04, 06:18 PM | Mage Armor- Since sorcerers can't wear armor of a normal type, magical "armor" is a must for low-level mages. Magic Missile- the most obvious 1st level offensive spell. Color Spray- Another good "offensive" spell that can daze your opponent to help your party affect them better. Mirror Image- makes it harder to hit "you" as there's now "more" of you for the enemy to take aim at. |
| sedrickcordell03-29-04, 06:36 PM | At 1st level one of the bests spells no mentioned is SLEEP. since you are 1st lv, you'll probably be fighting things like orcs and goblins (1hd monsters with low saves) So one sleep spell can take 4 creatures out of the battle at once. And for the big guys RAY of Enfeeblement because it does not alow a save. If you sap 4pt of str. that's a -2 hit -2 damage to all melee attacks. And mirror image is 2nd level by the way. |
| Orcish Fury03-29-04, 07:42 PM | I like Grease, as it never ceases to be useful for both tripping and disarming. All it takes is a failed reflex save to grease a weapon, causing the weilder to immediately drop it. |
| MakoPoser03-29-04, 08:04 PM | Thank you. :D Mako. |
| Thelon Fairblade03-30-04, 08:03 AM | I will second the suggestions for Color Spray and Grease. Both are great spells, and Grease is a multi-purpose spell. Be careful, though - both spells are "Close" range spells, requiring you to be within 25 to 30 feet of your target! Magic Missile is *not* a good spell for a 1st level sorcerer. Few foes will be troubled by a single 1d4+1 damage, when you could be incapcitating multiple foes (Color Spray, Grease), harming multiple foes (Burning Hands), or incapacitating more powerful foes (my Sorc 2 held off a troll with the Grease spel, for example). Later in your career, say at 3rd or 5th level (when you get a new 1st level spell), take Magic Missile. |
| Koga:The ninja trick03-31-04, 11:01 AM | Magic missle isn't worthy of your time till about level five. Color spray is over-rated. Mage armor and shield are nice, but you want to know what to have at first level.. The Koga would suggest True strike and one of these two. Mirror image. (If your in a hack&slash and need to stall opponents with decoys.) or Detect undead. (If you don't have a cleric in the group.) Truke strike is your obvious choice, equip him with a half-spear, or if you don't mind burning a feat for martial weapon proffiecentcy, scythe, and bassically True strike is an automatic critical. Meaning your scythe will do x4 damage and your spear x3. The scythe is 2d4 where as the spear is d8. The scythe holds a small advantage, but this is assuming you don't mind burning a feat. If not just use the spear.. You'll be doing more damage then the fighter for a while. |

True Strike does nothing to affect your chance of scoring a critical threat. The only effect it possibly has on criticals is that it increases your chance of confirming a crit threat. All it does is give you a +20 to your attack roll and negate any miss chance from concealment. What you might be thinking of is the first level Ranger spell Hunter's Mercy, found in Magic of Faerun. That spell causes your next bow shot to auto-hit and threaten a critical. Although True Strike is a good spell (useful for making sure you hit with your higher-level attack spells), it is deffinitely not one of the spells you want to take at first level. For the very first level I would take either sleep or color spray, and grease. |
