| Krothos04-29-04, 03:10 AM | I'm very confused. I have a 1st level Druid with an eagle companion. EAGLE Small Animal Hit Dice: 1d8+1 (5 hp) Initiative: +2 Speed: 10 ft. (2 squares), fly 80 ft. (average) Armor Class: 14 (+1 size, +2 Dex, +1 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 12 Base Attack/Grapple: +0/–4 Attack: Talons +3 melee (1d4) Full Attack: 2 talons +3 melee (1d4) and bite –2 melee (1d4) Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft. Special Attacks: — Special Qualities: Low-light vision Saves: Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +2 Abilities: Str 10, Dex 15, Con 12, Int 2, Wis 14, Cha 6 Skills: Listen +2, Spot +14 Feats: Weapon Finesse Environment: Temperate mountains Organization: Solitary or pair Challenge Rating: 1/2 Advancement: 2–3 HD (Medium) Level Adjustment: — These birds of prey inhabit nearly every terrain and climate, though they all prefer high, secluded nesting spots. A typical eagle is about 3 feet long and has a wingspan of about 7 feet. The statistics presented here can describe any similar-sized, diurnal bird of prey. Combat Eagles dive at prey, raking with their powerful talons. Skills: Eagles have a +8 racial bonus on Spot checks. PHB Quote: Remember that extra Hit Dice improve the animal companion’s base attack and base save bonuses. An animal companion’s base attack bonus is the same as that of a druid of a level equal to the animal’s HD. An animal companion has good Fortitude and Reflex saves (treat it as a character whose level equals the animal’s HD). An animal companion gains additional skill points and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster’s Hit Dice. Now for the confusion: the Druid's companion text suggests that I should ignore the eagle's normal +2/+4/+2 saves, and use the +2/+0/+2 instead as appropriate for a Druid of the same HD/level. Doesn't this drop the eagle's ability for a Reflex save? Or are these added together: +4/+4/+2 (the PHB quote above doesn't state Will saves)? It also states that the eagle will receive additional skill points as it increases HD. That would be 1 skill point per HD (2xINTmod, minimum 1), only spendable in Listen and Spot (the eagle's only skills)? Would someone rewrite the above eagle stat block as it would be a Druid's animal companion? Thanks in advanced!!! |

An eagle has good fort and ref saves; Fort 2 + 1 (Con bonus)=3 Ref 2 + 2 (Dex bonus)=4 Will 0 + 2 (Wis bonus)=2 The monster manual was correct with its 3/4/2 I'm not sure how the skills are done in the Monster Manual (3.5)In the 3.0 MM look on page 13. An animal gets 10-15 skill point per HD. The 3.0 MM say an eagle get +6 Listen and Spot (for a total of 12). On top of that an eagle +8 spot racial bonus during daylight. Why an eagle has 12 and not 15 i have no idea. |
| Krothos04-29-04, 01:29 PM | I failed to mention that I'm playing 3.5, not 3.0. So, anything from the previous edition won't help. Thanks! :D |
| Gilhaelith04-29-04, 02:58 PM | double post |
| Gilhaelith04-29-04, 02:59 PM | The basics haven't changed between 3.0 and 3.5. Somewhere in the begin of Monster Manual it talks about advancing monster, there is says how many skill points an animal can gets each HD. The saves are still the same in 3.5 as they were in 3.0. In other words your companion is excatly the same as MM 3.5 says. |
| Krothos04-29-04, 05:20 PM | Sorry, still confused.... What will be final saves for my Druid's eagle at 1st level? I can figure it out thereafter.... Again, thanks! |
| Master Sorcerer04-29-04, 09:00 PM | Your final saves are what you have them at. |
| Gilhaelith05-01-04, 12:51 PM | Gotta stop double posting  |
| Gilhaelith05-01-04, 12:53 PM | An eagle is a 1 HD creature meaning that is has one 'level'. It gets good Fortitude and reflex saves and a poor will saves. Meaning that at 1 HD his base saves are +2/+2/+0 ____base____abilities_____total ____ save____bonus______saves fort __+2__+1 (12 con= +1)= +3 ref __ +2__+2 (15 dex= +2)= +4 will __+0__+2 (14 wis= +2) = +2 On other words it work just the same as saves calculation for a normal character (PC) Hope this clears it up for you. |
| Krothos05-01-04, 07:53 PM | Thank you. That helps a lot. |
