| Kiri Sittori09-15-04, 11:26 PM | Curious to hear your design theories. What do you think? If you want a simple power-game build, go with one or both (humans only) Spell Focus feats in illusion, and take Colour Spray as one of yer spells. Alternately, you could go with Enchantment and use charm person and sleep, though you'd be pretty screwed against elves. As for my *design theories,* it does depend on my character. For instance, if I wanted a character that was really interested in old maps and other forgotten lore, I might take both of my feats (I tend to play humans) in Diligent and SkF: Decipher Script (and, MORE THAN LIKELY, be playing a wizard or bard. :P ) If I wanted a blaster build, I'd grab either Still or Silent Spell, so I could pick up Energy Substitution: (acid or electric) at L3. Perhaps I'd want to be a summoner. SpF: Conjuration and Augment Summoning. It all depends. |
| green_yawgmoth09-15-04, 11:29 PM | Depends on what you're going for: Explody Sorcerer: Go with SF - Evocation. Harder DCs = more hurty. If you're a human, you can take GSF - Evocation too. Smarty Sorcerer: Education (from ECS). Great for getting those knowledge skill prereqs for PrCs. Undecided major Sorcerer: Be a Bard. That way you can try to do a little of everything and not suck at all of them. ;) But really, it all comes down to what blainetog said; whatever makes sense for the character. :) http://photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| anglar09-15-04, 11:31 PM | If your DM doesn't give it for free, Eschew Materials. Now all those spells that don't have costly material components really do just appear in your head. |
| Ithilorien09-15-04, 11:33 PM | Eschew Materials, Thematic Spell, Spellcasting Prodigy . . . |
| TheDarkestOfAngels09-16-04, 06:12 AM | Eschew Materials & Silent Spell (though I tend to take feats like that early so they can be of much greater benifit later, even though I can only "silent" cantrips right now.) |
| amethal09-16-04, 06:29 AM | If you are thinking of playing a summoning sorcerer, then take spell focus (conjuration) and augment summoning. [Apologies Kiri - just realised you suggested this first!] Those celestial badgers can kick some ass at first level with +4 Str and smite evil. The snag is that it takes a full round to cast Summon Monster I, so max out your concentration just in case.... but you were going to do that anyway, right? Also, take celestial as a starting language (assuming you have bonus languages from your Intelligence) so you can talk to the critters if you need to. Its hardly a powergamer option, but its good fun. |
| Wildonion09-16-04, 08:13 AM | I'm building my Sorcerer (He is a Dragonkin that you can find on the Races Board) and I took Rapid Reload for my crossbow. I am planning to deal major damage later when I multiclass as a fighter so that I can get some HP and new weapon choices. For spells I'm still deciding, I was very sleepy last night :D I recomend you check our the Dragonkin, good sorcerer race (Even if they don't get the bonus skill points and feat that the human does.) | ninjarabbit09-16-04, 10:46 AM | improved initative- going first or sooner is often the difference in a battle (or trying to escape) toughness- yes the feat sucks, but for a low level sorcerer it can be the difference in survival, especially if you con score isn't that great spell focus whatever- good since you'll be casting the same few spells over and over again |
| Sir Knight09-16-04, 11:12 AM | I love Eschew Materials for Sorcerers. In addition it would depend on the character. I take anything from Skill Focus to Combat Casting to a metamagic feat. It really all depends... I am also a fan of the two skill increasing feats (ala Alertness, Animal Affinity, Negotiator, etc). It really all depends on the character's background. I try to not make "cookie-cutter" ones and just go for the "best" feats. Just go with what you like the best. :) |
| Bartleby_GoC09-16-04, 03:03 PM | Well, since you can't really wear armor, you probably have a good dex, right? Right?!? Weapon Finesse and Combat Expertise are good (though WF will have to wait till level 3, need a +1 BAB, unless your DM lets you save allotment till L2). I've never been a fan of metamagic feats. I'd suggest looking for something that helps you survive once your spells are used up. Bartleby |
| Damien_Hiro09-16-04, 03:21 PM | Point blank shot for all of those rays and ranged touch attacks. Precise shot, "friends do not let friends throw acid arrows at each other." Both help even at higher levels, like tenser's transformation and using a bow or throwing darts. |
| Tony Vargas09-16-04, 03:38 PM | To a certain extent, it depends on what you want to do with your sorcerer. If you want to be a straightforward 'blaster' and plan on doing AE spells a lot, Improved Initiative is great, since it helps you go before your party and the enemy have closed with eachother and placing AEs becomes harder. Though you can try to pick some spells that ignore SR, with relatively few spells and an emphasis on blasting, Spell Penetration can be very good to have. Boosting saves can be nice, but it's hard to recomend Spell Focus after being spoiled by the 3.0 version. ;) If you want more variety in your spells known, Metamagick - even if you can't make much use of it at 1st - is a very good choice, as it allows you to make some of your spells pull double-duty. Extend, Heighten and Empower are all good for squeezing more use out of lower-level spells known. Silent and Still are also good, since you never know when you might need them. |
