+2 into spellbook = part of +1 level? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-22-06, 02:53 AM Was there ever a final ruling on whether the +2 spells that go automatically into your spellbook upon reaching a new wizard level was a class feature or part of their spells known? In other words, when a PrC says "+1 level of wizard spellcasting ability" do you get the +2 spells? or is that a draw to keep you in wizard. The part of me that hates that there's not much reason to mainline wizard wants it to be non x-ferable to the PrC, the other part of me realizes it aint that big a deal.

Also, if +2 spells isn't xferable why does Master Specialist say ""At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had gained a new level of wizard.""

My first impression was that it was a bad cut and paste job as they probably print that paragraph a lot. "spells known" to me means you gotta have a chart in your class description that says "SPELLS KNOWN."

Which would be fine, but then at level 2 they gain Expanded Spellbook which states ""You can add one spell of your chosen school to your spellbook."" So far so good. ""The spell...is in addition to the normal spells gained when increasing your level.""

So unless they meant that your normal spells gained per level was zero and they were just pointing that out to rub it in, it seems....gah! I just went crosseyed ((not that there's anything wrong with being a Differently-Focused-American)).

Can anyone please clarify. No matter what, something's wrong in this PrC write up, even if it's only a molehill.

12-22-06, 03:22 AM I've always felt that the two free spells at each level was part of the "and spells known, if applicable." I don't want to go back to AD&D where we have a level 5 wizard who can't cast third level spells because he doesn't know any.

12-22-06, 07:51 AM The two new spells are part of the spellcasting progression. Some of the older PrCs were errataed to make that clearer, but the principle remains across the board.
