I'm currently playing a CN character who's desire is to be a great warrior. However, as befitting his chaotic nature, he wishes to be the most diverse and talented warrior the world has ever seen. To accomplish this, he is taking one level and one level only of any core class or prestige class that he qualifies for and provides a +1 BAB. Here is the rundown so far:

Gorstagg, CN Human
Ranger 1, Fighter 1, Barbarian 1, Hexblade 1, Swashbuckler 1, Darkhunter 1, Dragonslayer1.

Current feats (B=Bonus feat): Dodge, Iron Will (Human B), Track (B), Mobility (B), Blind Fight, Weapon Finnesse (B), Power Attack

Iron will was originally taken to help with what I thought were going to be horrible saves in everything except for fortitude but this may not be a problem. I have the character's progression mapped out to 20th level by which time he will have a +20 BAB. From what I've seen of the prestige classes I'll get into, I'll be able to qualify for all of them in time (every feat slot will be needed) and my saves will end up looking pretty good. Definately better than a core class fighter in the reflex and will departments.

I know this is not the most effective build, it is done for roleplaying reasons and personal enjoyment only but what do you think of the idea. Could this character be OK at the later levels I'm shooting for?

The prestige classes left to take include but are not necessarily limited to the following: dragonstalker, dragon kith, duelist, chaotician, horizon walker, cavelord, bear warrior, invisible blade, animal lord, highland stalker, occult slayer, bloodhound, eldeen ranger, Illithid slayer.

Please be kind, but what do you think? :P

You have an interesting (if odd) concept. What I would do if I were you, would try and limit a tad the sheer amount of classes. Instead of 1 level of each class, maybe grab each class's defining feature, so to speak.

4 levels of Fighter (Weapon Spec)
3 Levels of Swashbuckler (Int to Damage)
2 Levels of Ranger (TWF)
3 levels of Hexblade
3 Levels of Barbarian
2 levels of Duelist (1d6 precise damage... think it's at 2nd)
3 levels of Highland Stalker (2d6 of Skirmish)

Mechanically, you might be slightly better off (though still not great), but you'd have to be careful how you take the classes to avoid XP penalties.

He might not have every class and PrC there, but he has a lot of them, and they pretty much represent every martial aspect you could ask for. He would have many, many options, and while he wouldn't excel at any of them, it could be interesting.

Thanks for the reply Jell_Moo but taking 1 level only of any class (as long as it gives +1 BAB) is the goal of the character. His aspiration is to be as diverse and flexible a warrior as possible. Can't double-dip on any classes.

Ok. The biggest hurdle you'll run into then is qualifying for Prestige Classes. Feats are going to be very precious, so I'd start looking at +1 BAB classes that use the same feats. High feat pre req classes are out, so stick to simple. The Bloodhound, for example is easy to get into, as is the Beastmaster I believe. It's gonna be tough, and may in fact be impossible unless you really start looking through supplements for PrCs that will synergize with your limited # of feats.

I've got it all planned out and it is indeed possible. I'll Show you my progression plan. A lot of these can be juggled around to some extent but I will be able to get the feats to qualify for all of them.

1 Ranger - Dodge, Iron Will (human B), Track (B)
2 Fighter - Mobility (B)
3 Barbarian - Blind Fight
4 Hexblade
5 Swashbuckler - Weapon Finesse (B)
6 Darkhunter (Requires track & blind fight) - Power Attack
7 Bear Warrior (Requires power attack & rage)
8 Dragonslayer (Requires Dodge & Iron Will)
9 Dragon Stalker (Requires Track) - Alertness
10 Dragon Kith (Requires Alertness)
11 Chaotician (weird base save requirements)
12 Duelist (requires dodge, mobility & Weapon Finesse) - Endurance
13 Cavelord
14 Horizon Walker (Requires Endurance)
15 animal Lord (Requires either endurance or Track) - Wpn focus: dagger
16 Invisible Blade (Requires wpn focus dagger & weapon Finesse
17 Blood hound (requires track)
18 Eldeen Ranger (Think it requires track) - Improved Init
19 Highland Stalker (Can't remember now but I know I can qualify)
20 Occult Slayer (Requires Improved init & weapon focus)

I may have my order wrong on some of these but this is my general plan.
Whaddya think? :D

The only immediate problem I see is that I am certain the Invisible Blade requires more feats. Far Shot, Point Blank Shot... something along those lines.

Other than that I'd have to wait until after work to check out the PrC prereqs. But if you're right... WOW!

The invisble blad is a special case. search for a thread on that Prc and you will find people talking about how the prerequisites don't make sense. It requires point blank shot and quick draw as well as weapon focus, however, there are no real ranged features to the class. This is because the original version appeared in dragon as a 10 level prc with some throwing abilities in there. The class's designer says in that thread that it was cut down to a 5 level prc but the prerequisites weren't updated. They should now be weapon focus, and weapon finesse. That's what the designer of the class said and that's good enough for me. Check it out.

However, if I really had to I think I could find one more. The forgotten realms book has the divine champion which only requires weapon focus with the diety's chosen weapon. I would just have to pick a diety and BAM!

I take it you're counting on stopping at level 20, and not going epic?

If the group I'm playing with decides to keep playing past 20th level, then I'll keep looking for prc's that I can take just one level of but I have no definate plans per se.

I understand that at epic level is where this character will begin to have major trouble but I'm not too concerned. It will be fun just to accomplish this endeavor.

Oh, I know about the origins and debate surrounding the Invisible Blade. It's just a matter of convincing your DM of that. :)

And out of curiosity, what kind of stats are you playing with?

kingdoms of kalamar players guide has a GLADIATOR core class w/a +1 bab. not sure what the exact benefits are, but i could look it up if you want.

Your dm is pretty nice letting you multiclass that much. I mean you do have to meet these people and get trained in order to become that class... it's not like woo I level up and bam I know the ways of the ranger! Unless your dm sucks.

DMs who require special training are rare imx.

Personally, I think its hilarious and I applaud him for trying something like this. The fact that he was able to find 20 clases and to prioritize them out to work upto 20th level is an accomplishment in of itself.

Besides, its one of those things that flys in the face of all those "Munchkin" types out there. Kinda like saying "Neener-neener-neeeeener....I have more classes than you do." :ayyyy!:

Good luck with this project of yours eggplantm. :king:

Actually, by the rules that's pretty much exactly how it happens. Doesn't really make much sense, I know, but then again, DM's who force me to find a trainer tend to have a short lifespan. :)

My DM is usually pretty easy going as far as what he will allow. That's because more often than not, I'm the DM. My brother-in-law & I take turns DMing so it's not really a problem. I'm still sticking to any special requirements for each prestige class. For example, the character recently befriended a wyrmling fang dragon and volunteered to be its guardian. The dragon is not a cohort or a companion, just a plot device to qualify for the dragonkith prestige class. The character is also always gathering information on different types of prestige classes (he has ranks - cross class).

The character's stats are pretty good. The one that helps the most is his 14 intelligence. I'll post them sometime when I have them on hand.

BTW, I checked all the numbers last night for prerequisites. It is all planned out now up to 20th level. It is possible and doesn't even look like it is going to be that difficult. My saving throws will be pretty good. Awesome Fort, Pretty good reflex and a better will save than a straight fighter about a +8 base will save. Other than that I will just have a butt-ton of class features including some of the following:
Favored enemy
Rage
Fast Movement
Hexblade's curse
Weapon Finesse
stonecunning
Aura of Courage
Canny defense
Favored Terrain
Bear Shape
Dagger sneak attack
and many others.

We'll see how it works out.

Bravo! Bravo!

If it is not a to big problem could you post the origin if the classes and PrCs, cause I want to try this my self.

Very interesting concept.

If anything, I'd try to find synergistic abilities. As an example- a rogue's sneak attack augmented by both a Paladin's smite evil AND a monk's stunning fist.

Not what I meant. Basically my dm says that I have to meet one to see what he does sort of. It's basically a quest to find what I've heard of to see it with my own eyes.

Dude, this concept is...AMAZING!

Bravo on your ability to put it all together this pretty, also!

I did have some questions myself, however, if you or anyone could answer:

Where are the Chaotician, Cavelord, Animal Lord, Blood hound, Eldeen Ranger, and Highland Stalker classes/PrCs from?

Thanks, and again, nice job!

Cheers.

I wondered why a DM who normally requires training gave you a free ridew with the fighter level. Had I known that multi-classing was that easy I could have had fun. :)

3 reasons:

1) My character was basically playing like a fighter anyway. He could have argued until blue in the face...

2) Bring it up suddenly and say "Next level is a level of Fighter. Any problems?" The element of surprise is your friend when dealing with a picky DM.

3) Simply repeatedly mention the words: Monkey Warlock. Breaks em every time. :D

Yes, yes it does. :)

Now, if your DM was using the fractional save progressions from Unearthed Arcana, your saves would be out of the park... :D
