Am I alone in thinking that the Blackguard, instead of being a Prestige Class, should be a Full Core Class built using the Paladin as a base? It would certainly make the whole "Fall from Grace" thing work more quickly: just trade in your Paladin levels for Blackguard levels.

No, you're not alone. Anyway, there are some prestigeclasses in Complete Divine that might be used as the missing 9 levels for a 20lv Blackguard, the Warpriest e.g. is a good candidate.

There are three variant paladins in Unearthed Arcana, two of which are basically what you're looking for: the LE paladin of tyranny and the CE paladin of slaughter. Their lay on hands ability inflicts wounds, and I think they have the aura of despair instead of aura of courage, but what else is different escapes me. Anyone have their UA copies handy?

The UA variant paladins really aren't that great. A much better alternative is in Dragon #312. It has LE, NE, and CE paladin variants (The NG, CG, LN, N, and CN versons are in #310). They have semi-unique special abilities and in the end are more flavourful. The magazines are cheaper two. (only $20 if you get both.)
