Can a Chameleon take "Obtain Familiar" as the 2nd level bonus feat and call and keep a familiar?

Can a Chameleon continue to take the same Arcane focus every day and not loose the familiar?

Thank you in advance

RAW probably yes, but most DM's will probably strangle the Player.

Why is that?

Many DM's just have a "This is the way things are" view of things. Some of them view familiars that way. If your DM is more permissive, then there should be no problem.

While you could just stay Arcane focused, there is nothing to stop you from re-acquireing the same one next time.

BTW, if one were to do this, they would lose most of the versatility that makes chameleons great.

Doesn't Obtain Familiar have a prereq of 3rd level arcane caster . . .

Strangely enough, the Chameleon's Arcane Focus provides caster level equal to two times your Chameleon level.

Back on topic, though, yes, a second level Chameleon could qualify for Obtain Familiar, although as previously stated, any time the Chameleon does not choose Arcane Focus, he will lose access to the feat, and it's benefits. That part isn't up for debate, but what exactly happens when you lose your familiar in that manner? This could be seen as dismissal of the familiar, and you could wind up with some exp penalties. And, you'd still need to pay 100gp each time you summon it...

And waiting a year and a day between familiars.

Yeah, there's that, too...

Chameleon text specifically says that you can't use its class abilities to qualify for feats or PrCs, so unless you had enough CLs from a diffrent sorce you can't do it
