Can the druid still have more than one animal companion in 3.5? How would that work?

3.5 Animal Companions are much tougher than 3.0 so care should be taken here.

That being said I don't think it would be too unbalanced if a druid had more than one animal companion so long as the druid is treated as lower level for the purpose of advancing the companion.

For example, a 4th level druid could have a wolf with +2 HD, +2 natural armor, +1 Str, 2 bonus tricks, and Link, share spells and evasion.
or
A black bear with 1 bonus trick, link, and share spells
or
2 wolves with 1 bonus trick, link and share spells

at 7th level the druid could gain a 3rd wolf and all three animals would be advanced as if the druid were 4th level

etc etc etc

I think officially, a druid cannot have more than one animal companion. But that's what rule 0 is for. Quaiven's scheme doesn't seem too bad.
I currently have a 13th level druid, and my companion is a wardog. He can wear barding, so with mundane studded leather barding and an amulet of protection +2 (same as a ring, but more amulety), my dog's AC is through the roof. Something in mid-30's, I think. My DM was nice enough to let me roll up the stats for my animal companion, though, so he has above average Str, Dex, Con, and Wis.

My original animal companion died from a orc with a great axe. My druid was killed (by a greataxe crit!) when he tried to cast Cure Light Wounds on his dog. The druid got raised, the dog didn't. I'm hoping eventually my DM will allow me to use Summon Nature's Ally to summon my original animal companion, because that would be cool. But he's probably a petitioner or celestial dog or something now. Oh, well.
