A while ago on Monte's boards, Amphetryon posted a thread dealing with a straight up front-line Wizard character.

Initially I, like you, thought this was ridiculous. But then, just for the heck of it, I tried it. While it wasn't the most effective character in the world, it was quite strong, and alot of fun to play.

I'll give you a snapshot of what the character looked like at first level, which is basically a clone of what Amphetryon did, with slight modifications.

The plan is to take Toughness for every feat that isn't a Wizard class bonus feat. The first bonus feat will be Still Spell, and the remaining ones will be either item creation or metamagic, whichever would've been more useful along the way.

My challenge to myself was 1) could this character be effective without multiclassing, and 2) without using any non-core material.

Buri Blackhammer
LG male dwarf Wiz 1
Str 10-------------------Hp 15
Dex 10------------------AC 10
Con 20------------------Skill Ranks
Int 14-------------------Escape Artist (cc) 2
Wis 9--------------------Spellcraft 4
Chr 8--------------------Craft (Weaponsmith) 4
Feats: Toughness, Scribe Scroll
Special: Dwarf racial abilities, Toad Familiar
Spells Known: 0 - All 1st - Mage Armor, Shield (for fighting other arcane casters), True Strike, Shoking Grasp, Ray of Enfeeblement
Typical spells prepared: 0: Touch of Fatigue (x3) 1st: True Strike, Shocking Grasp

What do you all think? Any thoughts about how to advance the character, what items to get, what spells to learn, what feats to take?

How did you get 15 HP's?

Oh, and you need stoneskin. Badly.

WIZ1: 4
Toad: 3
Toughness: 3
CON: 5

...

Considering he'll have 6-9hps per level, plus the toughness, plus CON-boosting, he shouldn't hold up that badly.

...

There are a few more worthwhile, low-level no-somatic-component spells besides True Strike: Feather Fall, a cantrip or two (can't remember which ones right now, Light & Dazzle, maybe?), Blur, Blindness/Deafness... later there's Shout, that's pretty nice. By then you'll have Still Spell, though.

Missed that toad familiar...

ray of frost and acid splash have no save.

Shocking grasp, or my fav, chill touch. Chill touch + Spellblade is evil. Since you are core only, just chill touch will have to suffice.

Oh, burning hands, of course.

Don't forget improved toughness from CW as soon as you meet the fort save prereq.
