| Kitty_Sedai03-02-04, 03:05 AM | I'm playing a new druid with the 3.5 version and i'm not sure which feats i should take, any idea? |
| Ogre Mage03-02-04, 03:15 AM | It really depends on the kind of druid you want to play. However, there is one Golden Rule for druids in 3.5. For your 6th level feat, Natural Spell is a must. |
| Kitty_Sedai03-02-04, 04:12 AM | Thanx I'm not sure what kind of druid i want, but so far (3rd level) i gave the druid Two-weapons fighting feat because i wanted a druid weilding two sickles, but now i need to choose another feat. |
| Disturbed103-02-04, 11:01 AM | well if your goin for 2 weap fight in your natural form, then i suggest takin 2 weap defense. itll help make up for lack of shield. however i agree, natural spell at lvl 6 is a MUST. aside form those, prolly start gettin some of the more powerful wild shape feats, or the prereqs for them anyway. good luck dis1 |
| SmiloDan03-02-04, 11:22 AM | Scribe Scroll, Craft Wonderous Device, and Brew Potion are all handy, especially since the 3.5 Druid has a lot of the great buffing spells, like Barkskin, Bear's Endurance, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, Cure Light Wounds, Lesser Restoration, Delay Poison, etc. Weapon Focus in the weapon you two-weapon in is doubly effective. Two Weapon Defense can help your low AC. Improved Initiative never sucks. Spell Focus-summoning is a good pre-feat for the Augment Summoning feat, which can be really useful for those spontaneous Summon Nature Ally spells. Are you talking about the feat you get at 3rd level? [edit] I play a 3.5 elf druid 6 archer. My feats: 1. Point Blank Shot 3. Rapid Shot 6. Natural Spell 9. planning on Rapid Shot 12. planning on Improved Critical--longbow 15. planning on Precise Shot 18. planning on Improved Precise Shot. |
| coolhand3703-24-04, 11:09 AM | Simple, Martial or Exotic weapon proficiency is an option as well, as it is not prohibited or restricted. |
| mrpink21303-24-04, 02:15 PM | spell focus(conjuration) and augment summoning, the focus does absolutely nothing, but augment summoning is worth it, two weapon fighting is also a great choice(my druid has it too), but i use a quarterstaff to benefit from shillelegh, even with sickles though its still a good choice because of bulls strength. |
| capt. narcissist03-24-04, 03:03 PM | heavy armor proficiency. wooden or Dragon scale Plate mail. |
| BW022203-24-04, 10:02 PM | Also take a look at the mounted combat feats. A druid's companion can easily be trained for combat riding and a lion, tiger, dire lion, etc. is much tougher than a horse or even paladin mount (less in) in combat. A tiger in chainmail with a few shared spells (barkskin, stoneskin, bull's strength, bear's endurance, cat's grace, greater magic fang, etc.) and you have a pretty powerful offensive machine. Add mounted combat and your choice of ride-by-attack, spirited charge, trample, etc. and you seriously increase your mounted potential. A druid can also max his ride skill (plus handle animal bonus) without the serious skill point drain of a paladin or fighter. Also, with reduce animal, spider climb, plus more versitile animals, a druid can often take her companion to places which horses and paladin mounts really can't go. Swimming, climbing, jumping, navigating caves, etc. is far easier for a lion, tiger, or dire wolf. Thanks, Brett |
| Archangel03-25-04, 07:35 AM | Archer druid??? ...this is a new one! I made a crazy trip druid. Go Combat expertise, Improved Trip, (and if human at lvl 1 Spell Penetration or Eschew Materials), then Natural spell at lvl6. At that lvl you can wild shape into Dire Wolf who is large, has 25 str and you have Improved Trip, cast Bull's Strength and you have an ultimate Trip master for +17 trip mod at lvl 6. Also cast Barkskin, Greater Magic Fang, Cat's Grace and ask for Mage armor! Now you are also untouchable with 23 AC(as opposed to normal 14)! Later when you get Animal Growth you cast that on you for a Huge animalistic rampage. Also don't forget to take Combat Reflexes later for that extra AoO with reach. Of course later you Wild Shape into Dire Bear! And on high levels you use a Huge Dinosaur(for a Gargantuan animalistic rampage)! EDIT: Looked a little better at MM and at lvl 8 can go Dire Wolf, until then use Black Bear wildshape! *smites ArchDemon |
| Stirgar03-25-04, 09:19 AM | You'll find lots of information of druid feats in the character optimisation board. Character Optimisation board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=339) On the top off my head I can think of these : - Natural Spell (closest to a no-brainer you'll find) - Blindsight (120' always-on blindsight) - Augmented Summoning (Though not one of *my* personal favs) - Vow of Poverty (Again, not a fav of mine but still quite good) - Fast Wild Shape - Improved Initiative - Dragon Wild Shape (Check out the shadow, fang, faerie dragons. The faerie dragon has a prehensile tail which means it can wield weapons) - Exhalted Wild shape (Persistent blink effect) On the melee druid side I've always had a thing for mounted combat druids. That way you can ride your companion AND he never loses his bonus with share spells because he's obviously less than 5' away from you. Game on! |

Which Martial weapon PROFICIENCY would you suggest for a Druid? edit to include 'proficiency, which is what I intended to say in the first place |
| coolhand3703-26-04, 11:18 AM | I would give them a composite shortbow or longbow. A druid can be a good ranged weapon user, since your dexterity is probably high enough for a good bonus, plus with a composite bow you can include your strength bonus to damage. In melee the way I like to go is the good old quarterstaff with shillelagh. |

In there, you get the ability to change into dragons, oozes, monstrous humanoids, plants, animals, vermin, humanoids, magical beats and reg beasts, undead, constructs, and maybe more, thats all i can remember. its a really good class. also, the Warshaper and the Natures Warrior are good PrCs from teh Complete Warrior. good luck dis1 |

It's a marginal use of a feat just to be able to use a composite longbow in place of the already proficient sling. Also, how many Druids have a high dex (when not wildshaped)? |
| Stirgar03-26-04, 11:50 AM | I wouldn't bypass blindsight. Granted it does not help spellcasting or fighting it's a life saver in many situations. Plus according to the 3.5 rules you don't gain blindsight when you turn into a bat anymore. |
| phb03-26-04, 11:55 AM | Originally posted by Kitty_Sedai I'm playing a new druid with the 3.5 version and i'm not sure which feats i should take, any idea? I like Track. There is an arguement that you can get this whilst wildshaped into a wolf, but it's extraordinarily useful to have while in other wildshapes, particularly the flying ones. Extend spell is good, makes longstrider worthwhile earlier, also has a profound effect on your cache of goodberries. Scribe scroll is also excellent. For relatively little cost and XP you can be capable of casting all the utility spells if really necessary, leaving the normal slots for combat and commonly used spells. I'd avoid brew potion, as some of the best spells (e.g. longstrider) for putting into potions have a target of 'personal' and are not valid for potions :( Plus, the 3rd level maximum is pretty limiting. |
| pres_man03-26-04, 11:56 AM | Two-Weapon Druid + Quarterstaff + Shillelagh = crazy damage machine (at least early on). 1 casting of Shillelagh effects both ends of a quarterstaff. Makes them +1 weapons that do the damage of same weapon 2 sizes larger. This means that for a medium druid, they will do 2d6 with each end, equivalent to fighting with two greatswords, with only the normal two-weapon penalties. Of course later on this is not all that great since you have to use a non-magical quarterstaff, which means no flame bursting or lightning or anything. But for a 1st level spell, it's pretty crazy. Cast some buffs to increase damage and attack and watchout for the druid. I just thought of a question, can shillelagh be cast on a greatclub? |
| Stirgar03-26-04, 01:57 PM | *I* would avoid creation feats unless you've got no wizard or such in your party. They can select them with their bonus feats. Druids have one of the nicest selection of feats out there, especially when it comes to wild feats. Then again, a few good potions here and there can save your life. Up to your playtype really. I really think that with wildshape, druid can be the jack-of-all-trades everyone makes the bard. You can fight, cast offense, heal, buff and pack some nasty abilities. That is where I think the wildshape feats fit in nicely. Need someone to open that door? Try a polar bear. Need someone to dive and retrieve and item underwater quickly, try shark or octopus. Need extra damage? Then try bear wildshapes (just be careful with that AC). Need elemental resistance? Try elemental wildshape or better yet dragon wildshape since it can be taken at 12. I think that in this aspect, blindsight, fast wildshape, exhalted wildshape, quick change really help out a ton. Then again, this might not be what you envisionned your druid doing. For melee druids there are nice PrC though I couldn't personally recommend any. |
| SmiloDan03-26-04, 04:27 PM | My elf druid began with a 17 Dex, and I upped it at 4th to 18. I upped my 17 Wis to 18 at 8th. But his primary duty was archery, initially, with some healing on the side. I've been pretty effective in my archer capacity, but now that I can be wildshape into Large size, I may do more melee stuff. I was planning on my 9th level feat to be Many Shot and my 12th level feat to be Improved Critical (longbow), but I'm seriously considering Craft Wand and this Dragon Wildshape I've been hearing about. What are the requirements for it? |
| vampeel04-23-04, 01:32 AM | Quicken Spell-Like Ability I know it is a monster feat, but I think it would work, so you could change once very fast in combat and still get full attack or cast spell or something. |
| TaisharMalkier04-23-04, 02:09 AM | Zug Zug. "I like Track. There is an arguement that you can get this whilst wildshaped into a wolf, but it's extraordinarily useful to have while in other wildshapes, particularly the flying ones." There is no argument. You get Track, as you get all bonus racial feats - and track is a bonus racial feat. Cheers |

Cheers What I am saying is that there is an arguement that because wolves get track as a bonus feat, there is no need to take it as a druid. |
| Ecthelion04-23-04, 04:36 AM | Wait a minute here: fair enough, you can freely take the a weapon proficiency feat in e.g. longbow, but you could NEVER use it! Well you could, but you'd lose all spells for 24 hours! The druidic oath, remember? This has nothing to do with lacking proficiencies, or I'd play an elven druid every time. |
| d_nychus04-23-04, 04:48 AM | That is false. In 3.5, a druid is only restricted to non-metal armor and shields. There is no mention of being restricted to non-metal weapons. Using a bow is totally acceptable. And, yes, an elven druid is a pretty good combo because of the free longbow proficiency, though your hp takes a bit of a hit because of that. |

If the latter is the case, then one just needs to first look at the advice given here and then go through the link in my signature to HB_Druids do the comparison... So my suggestion: Follow the link in my signature to Yekoj's Druid's Handbook. It is worth it. |
| Myrridin04-23-04, 08:49 AM | I'm particularly fond of playing a human character, Sacred Vow/Vow of Poverty first level, and going Monk 2/Druid 5/Nature's Warrior 4/Warshaper 3/Druid 6. You end up with a ton of special abilities, and you're immune to a lot of things, like a lot of elemental damage types, critical hits... :) |
| Oogar04-23-04, 11:34 AM | Originally posted by Myrridin I'm particularly fond of playing a human character, Sacred Vow/Vow of Poverty first level, and going Monk 2/Druid 5/Nature's Warrior 4/Warshaper 3/Druid 6. You end up with a ton of special abilities, and you're immune to a lot of things, like a lot of elemental damage types, critical hits... :) Uhm...... How? To be a Monk and Druid you would need to be Lawful Neutral, so no feats from Book of Exalted Deeds (Vow of Poverty). Side question, the search feature is down, and I was trying to find confirmation that an advanced animal companion does, or does not, advance in size. Any help would be great. Never mind, I found the answer in the 3.5 FAQ, sorry if anyone has bothered looking. |
| Myrridin04-23-04, 12:09 PM | Shift alignment. Start as Lawful good for the Monk, and when you become an ex-Monk you can shift your alignment to NG, valid for a druid, and then continue with the VoP stuff, as well as qualify for a druid. If they still make you assume XP penalties for the first level after the shift, I guess you can take that. I don't have the BoED on me right now, but it should still be legal to do. Since changing your alignment is legal, go for it. |
| Oogar04-23-04, 12:22 PM | Ah, okay - I assume no alignment shifts unless stated. Other then a black guard or assassin I avoid messing with builds that have an alignment shift. (not to mention that I usually forget that monk does not lose abilities if alignment changes) |
| Myrridin04-23-04, 01:03 PM | No worries. It's a pretty strong build; I've speced one out with good stats to 4th, 7th, 11th, 15th level. Pretty strong for the whole way. I'll admit it's a little weak when you're sitting at Monk 2/Druid 4. |
