| Zepherdragon08-19-05, 12:12 PM | Disclaimer: 4.0 Think Tank threads aren't meant to be taken into 3.x contexts. These threads are to explore a new system of D&D similar to how 3.x was to Advanced D&D and the orginal D&D. My hopes is to eliminate the usual limitations and correct obscure rules that are arbitrarily put into place to prevent overpowering PCs. Sage Advice is sp popular because a lot of rules aren't based off our own laws of physics and cause and effect. Even with the additioon of magic, there is always reason. I desire to make a more perfect system that takes from AD&D and 3.x the best it has to offer along with anyone elses useful and relivant input. I will attempt to ignore critisim that isn't founded, but even I give into the little anoyances sometimes. The point based class system is an attempt to put an end to imbalance among classes. This is a mechinism that allows complete customization of players' PCs to fit their idea of a hero. In 3.x, this would lead to instant min/maxing etc... but all I have to say is I'd certianly try to be the best damn fighter/wizard/monk/rogue I could possibly be. If you want to focus on a few things then that's what you concentrate on without getting class skills that you find useless or ones you never use. The system works like this so far, a complete rewrite of the value of certian abilitys may be in order once I explain the system. At any given level of any class you gain abilites through the 3.x system. Each ability has the same value as the level it is gained. In the case of a monk, the ability Purity of Body is gained at 5th level, thus this skill would cost 5 points. A lot of abilities require prerequsites that haven't been firmly established in 3.x. This will need to be done. Feats are bought starting at 1 point for the first one, 2 for the 2nd, 3 for the 3rd, and so on and so forth. I want to throw in almost every prestege classes abilties as well. Their abilities will have a different formula for determining their point value. I suggest giving them values by determining the lowest level a core class is able to achieve the prestege class and then add that value to the level the ability is achieved. Alignment and racial restrictions should only be required if it's fundamental to the ability. Example: the Monk's ability to Ki strike as a lawful weapon, in this case it's pretty must a given that the monk must be lawful, Fist of Hextor's strength boost which comes from the god Hextor. I'm still not sure on how to determine how many points PC's should get when they level up. Some core classes require many more points to stay true to the class. In the case of the monk, they need 404 points to achieve the 3.x verson of a level 20 monk. A Rogue on the other hand, requires only a meger 235 points. To be fair, I should allow any 3.x core class possible under the new system. I'm bouncing around the idea of starting off with 3 points to spend, plus 2x your newly achieved level when you gain enough experience. Now I can see a potential arguement for spontanious ability aquisition that the PC doesn't have a logical means to achieve. Such as a level 5 PC who has concentrated on melee combat and then decides to gain level 1 mage spells. In this case DMs should act in accordance with the previously established rules on multiclassing in the 3.x. Corse I have allowed for a loop hole in having a nifty feat called Miraculious Self Tought which allows for a PC to achieve an ability simply through a feat of their on will. Again, I remind everyone. This isn't a change in 3.x rules, it's a new system based off of them with a different purpose. |
