| kimura12110-14-07, 04:52 AM | Party is about to hit level 6 in the underdark. it consists of a scout4/ranger2 going dervish, fighter2/knight4 going kensai, rogue3/swashbuckler3 going assasin, and a gnome illusionist going shadow caster cheese and a cleric 6. The roles are filled although sometimes the illusionist is ineffective because of lack of direct damage and crowd control but that is about to change. We have skill monkeys well covered, healing is not a problem either. The scout has been more focused on archery but is about to jump more to melee with the dervish. Sometimes the knight sword and boards too much and doesnt use his two hander for some reason. ALL THAT SAID...... the new player has played rpgs before and even 3.5 but its been a few years. He's not much of a min maxer, more of a lighthearted roleplayer explorer type. What would be a good character for him to have fun with and would also benifit the group. I was thinking bard, warlock or duskblade would be fun. I normally dont allow races with level adjustments but since hes joining late i told him he could play a non standard underdark race with a LA. |
| gullas10-14-07, 06:29 AM | well you pretty much have a the all of the roles in control so Yeah, a bard is a good option for that. duskblade to cover up the blasting part or warlock might be good. but I support bards , you can never heve to many of 'em:D |
| VulcanStormwrath10-14-07, 07:51 PM | Duskblade tightens up melee and adds some nice ranged options and mobility spells. Take reach spell and he becomes a hell of a shooter able to hit with things like vampiric touch or ghoul touch from a distance. |
| Morrowner10-14-07, 08:44 PM | You don't have all the roles covered. You've got a lot of melee types and no healing. Clerics are pretty easy to play, it was my first class in 3.0. Ah, sweet nostalgia. :D They're all upside and in a 6 person group the healing will be greatly appreciated. Druids are neat, too. The roleplaying part of the character might have fun adapting the traditionally woodland-themed Druid to the underdark. |
| kimura12110-14-07, 09:41 PM | and a cleric 6. sorry pelor cleric with healing domains and augmented healing. not much of an offensive weapon right now so he mostly heals and buffs sometimes. also has a cure moderate wand as backup. it takes care of our healing as long hes not bothered. the ranger may get a wand at some point too. looks like our knight is leaving so our 6th player has to be a tank. he made a drow duskblade. i took away spell resistance and dropped the darkvision to 60ft and gave him a +1 level adjustment instead. thought +2 was a bit savage. mostly for flavor, he coulda been a human. gave him a greatsword, and improved buckler defense and power attack for feats. put his best stat in con and got a +2 con amulet so his d8 wont hurt too bad. a little softer than the knight but i think it will be ok. |
| Jaxgaret10-14-07, 11:59 PM | My suggestion would definitely be for them to play a Bard - you have plenty of mundane attackers who will love the combat bonuses that the Bard will provide from Inspire Courage. Refer the player to this thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/archive/index.php/t-838437.html) for info on optimizing Inspire Courage. If they want to be more focused on being an arcanist, the tried and true Bard6/LyricThaumaturge4/SublimeChord10 is a good build. looks like our knight is leaving so our 6th player has to be a tank. he made a drow duskblade. i took away spell resistance and dropped the darkvision to 60ft and gave him a +1 level adjustment instead. thought +2 was a bit savage. mostly for flavor, he coulda been a human. gave him a greatsword, and improved buckler defense and power attack for feats. put his best stat in con and got a +2 con amulet so his d8 wont hurt too bad. a little softer than the knight but i think it will be ok. Oh, okay, so you've already got it all set up. Well, good luck! Good job with the Drow conversion to +1 LA. +2 is too much. |
| Johnny_Angel10-15-07, 03:40 AM | Bard 6 Some arcane spells; healing, and enough skill points to be able to be good at a lot of different things. If he's looking for a PrC (and it's available,) Seeker of The Song is pretty good. If he decides to multiclass, I'd actually suggest taking some levels in either Beguiler or Rogue. Bards are also usually fun to roleplay. |
| Operation_Shoestring10-15-07, 04:45 AM | Bard is good. Use the animate instrument spell (complete scoundrel?) to inspire competence/morale while having hands free for Whip->trip and casting. Hey, how about Bard/War Weaver/Marshal? Crazy amount of support abilities. |
| Jaxgaret10-15-07, 02:52 PM | Hey, how about Bard/War Weaver/Marshal? Crazy amount of support abilities. Yeah, that is a really great support character build. I'm thinking about playing one in an upcoming campaign. |

Eventually he'll manage, but imo at first he may need some help with that light armor of his. Just in case, the casters might want to prepare a conjuration or two at first. I was actually about to suggest a psychic warrior but it appears he's already set. |
| The_Wrath_of_Talos10-15-07, 03:22 PM | I'd go with a ninja or a warmage for fun. The last thing I'd recomend is a bard playing an instrument and sing while his voice echoes through the caverns attracting potential enemies. |
| Jaxgaret10-15-07, 03:24 PM | I'd go with a ninja or a warmage for fun. The last thing I'd recomend is a bard playing an instrument and sing while his voice echoes through the caverns attracting potential enemies. Subsonics. |
| The_Shaman10-15-07, 03:37 PM | Subsonics. Or chanting, or a nonvocal performance skill. It would definitely be weird, but a character using perform (weapon drill) from CWarrior would make a fine point about not being the stereotypical bard. |
| RobbyPants10-15-07, 04:21 PM | I have a few class suggestions: Druid - Why not really? It's a solid, versitile class. Conjurer - This will compliment the illusionist. Have him bar Evocation and Enchantment. Have him take the immediate magic variant from PHBII so he can have little 10 foot teleports (read lifesavers!) instead of a familiar. Dragon Shaman - Similar to the bard, it's a good addition to a larger party, that can help fill in the gap on many roles. Those are probably your best options. Also, on a semi-related note, that Swashbuckler/Rogue did take Daring Outlaw, right? ;) |
| kimura12110-15-07, 05:49 PM | he's taking daring outlaw with this levels feat of course. savage feat btw. the scout is also getting swifthunter this level too :D |
| Jaxgaret10-15-07, 06:30 PM | Dragon Shaman - Similar to the bard, it's a good addition to a larger party, that can help fill in the gap on many roles. Bah. Don't even mention the Dragon Shaman in the same breath as the Bard! :) Though the DS is a support character, it is much more similar to the Marshal. The Bard and DS share almost no similarities beyond being support characters. I loves me my Bards. EDIT: Perhaps you meant 'similarly to the Bard, it's a good addition to a larger party, that can help fill in the gap on many roles', which I would agree with completely. |
| Killy10-15-07, 07:30 PM | I would definately say Warlock, fun class. |
| The_Shaman10-15-07, 08:18 PM | I prefer the Dragonfire Adept to either, really, unless there are good RP reasons to take them. If it has the feature where it trades an invocation for an aura, it becomes even more party-friendly. Still not as versatile as a bard or as combat-useful as a duskblade or Psy-warrior, but definitely handy to have around. |
| RobbyPants10-17-07, 10:33 PM | EDIT: Perhaps you meant 'similarly to the Bard, it's a good addition to a larger party, that can help fill in the gap on many roles', which I would agree with completely. That's exactly what I meant, which is why I compared the DS to the Bard. ;) I know they're different, but from what I've seen in game play, they both only seem to be suitable for already established parties. Generally speaking, I wouldn't recommend either for a party that didn't already have at least four characters. |

Or a Human Rogue2/Bard+PrCs18 with Able Learner doing a great job as the skillmonkey/trapfinder. But generally, yeah, the Bard is best in a 5+ sized party. |
| danielinthewolvesden10-18-07, 03:16 AM | I Dragon Shaman - Similar to the bard, it's a good addition to a larger party, that can help fill in the gap on many roles. Yes, the Dragon Shaman is cool, can act as a back up healer, and his auras will help a large party a lot. The DragonFireAdept is really a improved Warlock. Not a bad choice for your party, tho. There is also Warmage. Much blasting goodness. Fun. The other arcanist in the party will solve the warmages deficiencies. |
