This is my first crack at creating a class, and thusly, I chose something with source material. This is based off of Brian Clevinger's 8-Bit Theatre webcomic. I assumed no one tried to make a conversion since it's ussually taken Wizard=Black Mage. But, eh, what the hell.

The Black Mage

http://nuklearpower.com/images/8bitportrait/joebm.gif

Some people get thier kicks from a nice game of cards. Others enjoy a fine night of whining of dining. A Black Mage finds a nice evening to be one that includes hurling maximized empowered widened fireball into a large orphanage, then picking off the survivors with lightning bolts. Working in stabbing someone in the face makes the night oh so sweeter. Black Mages are easily annoyed and tend to grow tired of people who they can't kill quickly and get away with it.

Adventures: Black Mages tend to adventure mainly to find more victims and to find more ways to torture said victims.

Characteristics: Black Mages rely mostly on arcane magic from the evocation school, but commonly have the temptation to stab thier enemies to death with thier dagger, thier favored weapon. Black Mages tend to be cowardly, if things don't go thier way, they have no qualms about fleeing, and possibly returning at a later date for revenge.

Alignment: Black Mages must be Chaotic Evil. Thier vileness and cruelty cannot be viewed any other way besides evil, and thier urges to kill anything that annoys them makes Lawfulness literally impossible.

Religion: Most Black Mages don't feel the need to dedicate thier murders to any god, although some do follow Erythnul, God of Slaughter, hoping to do what they enjoy and score brownie points in the afterlife. Nerull is another popular diety, and Vecna is also popular to Black Mages hoping to hone thier magical skills(to improve kills per day, of course.).

Background: More often than not, Black Mages are troubled youths shipped off to wizardry schools with no desire to become magicians. They tend to doze off in most classes, learning nothing. However, the evocaton classes peak thier interests, especially the spells that cause explosions and bring the pain. The angst of the future black mage and the knowledge of these spells quickly becomes a probablem for his professors and he is ussually booted from school. Occasionally, a mischievious wizard or possibly a temple of Erythnul will give a youth a crash course in Evocation purely to unleash the Black Mage upon the world.

Races: Humans of nobility tend to cause the most Black Mages, as thier youths are most often neglected. Half-Elves are the next common, ussually for a similar reason. Black Mages of other races are rare, but not non-existant.

Other Classes: Black Mages view everyone else as inferior to them, even other Black Mages. They ussually won't say it to your face, but all other classes are simply meat shields to the black mage, protecting him so he can cause more destruction.

Game Rule Information:

Abilities: Intellegence determines how many spells and how powerful a Black Mage can cast. Dexterity is important due to inability to wear armor. Constitution is also important as Black Mages aren't the most sturdy of characters.

Alignment: Chaotic Evil

Starting Gold & Age: As Wizard.

Concentration(Con), Decipher Script(Int), Disguise(Cha), Knowledge(Arcana), Hide(Dex), Intimidate(Cha), Spellcraft(Int)

20 +10/+5 +6 +6 +12 Stabbing Frenzy 6/day, Stab +5d6, Finally!

Weapon and Armor Profiency: A Black Mage is only proficient with the Light Crossbow, Quarterstaff, and the Dagger. A Black Mage is not proficient with any armor or shields, and will take an arcane spell failure chance if casting a spell with somatic components while in armor.

Hadoken(Su.): At 1st Level, once per day, The Black Mage can use Hadoken as a spell-like ability. He never gains more uses of this ability as a spell-like ability, although he can prepare Hadoken as a Ninth-level spell. When using Hadoken as a Spell-Like ability, instead of 9(like the normal spell version of Hadoken), apply the highest level spell slot you have availible to you. If the highest level spell you can cast is a 4th level spell, use 4th when determining your Hadoken's spell-DC.

Hated Ally(ex.): The Black Mage is one who's ire is easily gained. He choses one of his "allies" that he particulary despises. Whenver the Black Mage directly or indirectly(via, say, a fireball) injures thier hated ally, they gain a +1 morale bonus on thier attack rolls, damage rolls, and AC for 1 minute, from the joy of causing anguish to one they hold a heavy distaste for. At 6th, 13th, and 19th levels, the Black Mage may choose additional hated allies(with the bonuses stacking, for a possible +4 to Attack/Damage/AC). If the hated ally dies or for other reasons leaves the company of the Black Mage, the Black Mage may change his hated ally. If the Black Mage lacks an ally, or all of his allies are hated already, he 'saves' the hatred until someone worthy gains that hatred.

Stab(ex.): The Black Mage can make precisely targeted stabs with his dagger. With said dagger, they can make sneak attacks following the same rules as the Rogue version. However, if the target is wearing heavy armor, the Stab is ineffective, in addition to things normally immune to sneak attacks. The Bonus starts at 1d6, and increases at 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th levels.

Stabbing Frenzy(ex.): Once per day at level 1, and increasing over time, the Black Mage can enter a stabbing frenzy. During this time, he will attempt to stab anything around him into a hole-filled bloody death. During this time, he cannot cast spells, or use skills linked to INT/CHA/WIS(with the exception of Intimidate), but he can use his "Stab" ability. He can apply his INT-modifier in addition to his STR-mod to damage rolls. The Frenzy lasts as many rounds as his BM level + 3 + CON Modifier. The Black Mage will initially only target enemies, however if he runs out, he will turn on his allies and begin to stab them into a bloody, hole-covered death. The Black Mage can attempt to end his Frenzy prematurely with a will save of DC(15+BM Class Level). When the Frenzy ends, the Black Mage is fatigued. Stabbing Frenzy is mechanically considered a Rage or Frenzy ability when determining PrC prereqs or Feat requirements.(Example: Extra Rage will allow you an extra Stabbing Frenzy.)

Weapon Focus: Dagger(Ex.): At 2nd level, the Black Mage gets the weapon focus: dagger feat for free.

Get This Thing out of My Hat I(Ex.): The Black Mage showed interest when the teacher spoke of summoning creatures of destruction. At 7th level, the Black Mage may choose between Summon Monster IV or Animate Dead and add it to his spell list. In Addition, if you choose Summon Monster IV, you may add Knowledge: The Planes to your class skill list, or Knowledge: Religion if you choose Animate Dead.

Weapon Specialization: Dagger(Ex.): At 9th Level, the Black Mage gets the Weapon Specialization: Dagger feat for free, even if he doesn't meet the prerequisites.

Get This Thing out of My Hat II(Ex.): At 11th level, the Black Mage may choose Create Undead or Summon Monster VI and add it to his spell list.

Greater Weapon Focus: Dagger(ex.): At 14th level, the Black Mage gets the Greater Weapon Focus: Dagger feat for free, even if he doesn't meet the prerequisites.

Get This Thing Out of My Hat III: At 15th level, The Black Mage may choose Create Greater Undead or Summon Monster VIII and add it to his spell list.

Greater Weapon Specialization: Dagger(ex.): At 17th level, the Black mage gets the Greater Weapon Specialzation: Dagger feat for free, even if he doesn't meet the prerequisites.

Tireless Stabbing Frenzy(ex.): At 18th level, the Black Mage is no longer fatigued at the end of his stabbing frenzy.

Finally!(Ex.): At 20th level, the Black Mage figures out a way around that damn armor. His "Stab" ability now affects even those wearing heavy armor.

Black Mage Spells: A Black Mage prepares his spells much like a wizard. He has a spellbook that works the same as his non-homicidal bretheren. To cast a spell, he must have INT equal to 10+ the spell's level. He does not need 19 INT to use the Hadoken as a spell-like ability. A Black Mage starts with all his cantrip spells, and 3 level one spells of his choice.

"Dagger" spells.

The Black Mage can enchant thier weapon with magic, so that when it touches their opponents, the magic is unleashed onto the poor victim. The spell may only be cast on dagger weapons.

Consider each spell:

Transmutation
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: Touch
Target: Dagger touched
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving throw: Harmless
Spell Resistance: Harmless

Chaos Dagger- if it strikes a lawful creature, the magic damage occurs. The Chaos version of the spell additionally has the [Chaos] descriptor, and thusly cannot be used if the Black Mage ever turns Lawful.
Evil Dagger- if it strikes a good creature, the magic damage occurs. As above, the Evil version of the spell has the [Evil] descriptor, and thusly cannot be used if the Black Mage ever turns Good.
Fire Dagger- Fire damage erupts from the dagger.
Ice Dagger- cold damage chills the target.
Lightning Dagger: Electricity shocks the target.

Minor +1d4 damage
Lesser +1d6 damage
Normal +1d8 damage
Greater +1d10 damage
Superior +1d12 damage

---

Ultima
Evocation[Light, Chaos]
Level: BM 9

Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 feet +40 ft/level)
Area: 80- ft. -radius burst
Duration: Instantanous
Saving Throw: Reflex partial
Spell Resistance: Yes

The Black Mage shuffles his hands points at a target, then a large glowing nuclear ball of energy engulfs from the pointed, growing and devastating whatever it touches.

Ultima deals 1d10 damage per Black Mage level(Maximum 30d10), and with a sucessful reflex save, the damage is halved.

Outside what's noted, treat Ultima as the Sunburst spell(without the blindness and such.)

--

Hadoken
Evocation [Light, Chaos, Evil]
Level: BM 9
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 30 feet(+5 per level)
Area/Target: Straight Line from caster to target, 5 foot width

The Black Mage's desire for destruction siphons love straight from the universe and concentrates into one solid beam of wanton destruction and pain. The Beam deals 1d12 damage per BM Level(Max 20d12), and the damage can be halved by sucessful reflex save.

Outside what's noted, treat Hadoken as Lightning Bolt.

Material Component: The Soul of an Innocent

--

Lesser True Strike
Level: BM 0
Components: V, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: personal
Target: self
Duration: See Text.

Like True Strike, but only a +10 insight bonus.

Ex- Black Mages
If the Black Mage stops being chaotic or evil, he retains his weapon profiencies, his spells he can cast, the "Stab" ability, however he loses his ability to go into a stabbing frenzy, the benefits of "Hated Ally", and the ability to use Hadoken as a spell-like ability. If he falls back into Chaotic Evilness, he will regain the stabbing frenzy ability, Hated Ally, and the Hadoken. In addition, he cannot use the Chaos Dagger line if he becomes Lawful, nor can he use the Evil Dagger line if he becomes good.

The skills fit like Hide, so seems fine, but why so few knowledge skills?

Weapon and Armor Profiency: A Black Mage is only proficient with the Light Crossbow, Quarterstaff, Whip, and the Dagger. A Black Mage is not proficient with any armor or shields, and will take an arcane spell failure chance if casting a spell with somatic components while in armor.

Why a whip?

Hadoken(Su.): At 1st Level, once per day, The Black Mage can use Hadoken as a spell-like ability. He never gains more uses of this ability as a spell-like ability, although he can prepare Hadoken as a Ninth-level spell.

Basically Hadoken is like a Lightning bolt spell (5 foot width). Damage is higher than lightning (though it is normally 9th level) 1d12/level up to 20d12. Is the DC 10 + 9 level spell + Int? Advantage of Spell-like casting it is can't counter with dispel magic.
Decent ability, 1/day seems fine. does it have sdame restriction as Fireball/lightning bolt about barriers?

Hated Ally(ex.): The Black Mage is one who's ire is easily gained. He choses one of his "allies" that he particulary despises. Whenver the Black Mage directly or indirectly(via, say, a fireball) injures thier hated ally, they gain a +1 bonus on thier attack rolls, damage rolls, and AC for 1 minute, from the joy of causing anguish to one they hold a heavy distaste for. Hated Ally makes me be very supicious of my Bm freind in a party lol.

Black Mage Spells: A Black Mage prepares his spells much like a wizard. To cast a spell, he must have INT equal to 10+ the spell's level. He does not need 19 INT to use the Hadoken as a spell-like ability.

Does this mean they need a spellbook? Do they know all spells like a Cleric?
Even Cleric Prepare spells. Just asking because I never saw BM's book in the comic much.

Ultima
Evocation[Energy]
Level: BM 9
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 feet +40 ft/level)
Area: 80- ft. -radius burst
Duration: Instantanous
Saving Throw: Reflex partial
Spell Resistance: Yes

The Black Mage shuffles his hands points at a target, then a large glowing nuclear ball of energy engulfs from the pointed, growing and devastating whatever it touches.

Ultima deals 1d10 damage per Black Mage level(Maximum 30d10), and with a sucessful reflex save, the damage is halved.

Decent, so what kind of damage is this untyped?

Hadoken
Evocation [Energy]
Level: BM 9
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 30 feet(+5 per level)
Area/Target: Straight Line from caster to target, 5 foot width
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex Half
Spell resistance: yes

The Black Mage's desire for destruction is concentrated into one powerful beam of concentrated anniliation. The Beam deals 1d12 damage per BM Level(Max 12d20), and the damage can be halved by sucessful reflex save. Every time the beam is used, a small amount of love in the world dissapears.

Is this untyped energy? Sonic? What? But I like the spell.

Lesser True Strike
Level: BM 0
Components: V, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: personal
Target: self
Duration: See Text.

Like True Strike, but only a +10 insight bonus.

I think Lesser TS is strong, but since it is only BM and not Wiz/Sorc seems okay.

This is so absolutely accurate and true to the source it brings tears to my eyes. Once I quit laughing my ass off I re-read the class. It's a work of art. The there is only one change I would want to make.

Remember that Hadoken is Black Mage's 9th level light spell ("It exposes your internal organs to daylight!"). It needs to be Evocation [Light]. :D

Let the stabbity death begin!

Love the class. Just curious though, why does the Hadoken cap at 12d... oh, I get it. There's a typo: Hadoken is supposed to cap at 12d20 methinks.
Master_of_Flames

08-09-05, 04:29 AM
you need to make a white mage and a red mage. maybe have the red mage get a munchkin bonus ;)
(oh, and you have a typo, the 20th level stab should be 20d6, not 2d5)

I like it and find it balanced-ish.

Thanks.

Why not any non-good? Does it have to be CE?

Considered Simply only Allowing Non-Lawful, Non-Good, still hard to consider a TN Homicidal Maniac who gets benefits from maiming allies.

The skills fit like Hide, so seems fine, but why so few knowledge skills?

Was trying to imply he focuses on his lust for arcane power/destruction and not much else. Considering adding a benefit of "Get This Thing Out of my Hat!" adding Knowledge: The Planes, or Knowledge: Religion as a class skill depending on the benefit chosen.

Why a whip?

Wanted to discourage Crossbow use, Clubs didn't make sense for a FF1/8BT BM. His profiency looked sparse vs. a Sorcerer's, so I figured I'd give a nod to future games where BMs can use whips. Although I ought to scrap everything besides the dagger.

Yes on it following barrier rules. I overlooked spell DC, I'll edit it to weaken that- Potentially a 22 DC for such a nasty spell at low level is a tad harsh. I also considered giving him a 9th level spell slot at Lv1, which would behave like a CL domain slot(It can ONLY be used for Hadoken), but thinking of that now realize the Lv9 spell DC at level 1.

Stab is useful at certain times I guess.
Hated Ally makes me be very supicious of my Bm freind in a party lol.

Considering changing so they can't change thier hated ally- even if they die. The BM might get his kicks from stabbing you in the face, however, he needs you alive to protect him.

Does this mean they need a spellbook? Do they know all spells like a Cleric?
Even Cleric Prepare spells. Just asking because I never saw BM's book in the comic much.

Well his Background here says he's a Wizard who abandoned his school, so he still follows Wizard rules. I'll change this for clarity.

Decent, so what kind of damage is this untyped?

Is this untyped energy? Sonic? What? But I like the spell.

Both are light, brain fart when typing them out.

I think Lesser TS is strong, but since it is only BM and not Wiz/Sorc seems okay.

It's purely meant to help him actually hit something in lower levels- Arcane casters having low BAB and typically low STR, tend to have trouble getting hits vs. the Fighter.

"Official" version so to speak is definitely kind of weak IMO.

And Endaire has an excellent Red Mage (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=314983). Inspired partially by it, also partially inspired by idleness.

IMO, this should pretty clearly be a morale bonus, not untyped.

and i would have to agree with BM having the requirement of chaotic evil. this is very much the embodiment of chaotic evil, to me... i mean... hated ally? if that doesn't just scream CE, then i don't know what does.

actually, black mage's desire for destruction isn't concentrated into anything iirc. from what i remember, it is actually powered by converting _love_ into destructive energy. (see here (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=041209) for details)

and uh... it should probably count as evil or something because of that =P

Has anyone besides myself play tested this? It looked good on paper, but how does it play to ya?

I'm going to go over the complete line and add the spells for that, although it certainly can be applied what spells would be on that list.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but I would like some feedback to take into consideration for future classes I may make.

very cool, needs more spell options, and if your going to make him ce and love pain giving, give him more necromancy. actualy i made 3 spells that would be perfect for this guy, i playtested them, they're balanced, and so fit your guy

blades of blood:2nd bm necromancy no save close range
deals 1d4 slashing dmg per lvl(max 5d4) to 1 target per level (maximum of 5) any one creature can only be effected by one blade. for each target effected, the caster takes 1d4

vengence: 3rd necromancy (evil) will half medium
this spell deals damage to one creature equel to the amount of damage it did you in the past 24 hours. this damage is raw arcane power

spite: 3-5(still in the works) no save necromancy close range
the caster sacrifices a number of hitpoints, then makes a ranged touch attack. if it hits, the target takes an ammount of damage equal to twice the number of hitpoints you sacrificed to cast this spell

Brian Clevinger said himself the mystic theurge prestige class did redmage justice..

As for Blackmage, a Warlock has the same feel. Just give the Warlock a couple of special feats he can take.

Stabbity Death: [Special]
Prequisite: Cha 13 or higher. 1 level in Warlock.
Special: You can a number of extra attacks this round equal to your cha modifier. These extra attacks take a -2 in attack/damage roll penalties.

Waboom! This is so half-of-my-friends when they play D&D and it's also what I want to play in an uncomming campaign. x00t!

it should do 20 damage/level, no variables, just destruction.

Black Mage has used Teleport and Feather Fall before, (Teleporty stabbity on the iceberg, and feather fall when jumping out of a falling deathtrap), but make a rule that at least half of the Black Mage's Prepared spell must be damage dealing spells.

you have to add the fighterdoken...

that it is the power to toss one of your hated allies to the enemy dealing damage to both in the process.
