I used this variant myself once and really enjoyed it, so it definitely comes recommended. One issue of Dragon magazine had variant paladins for every level. Instead of special mount, one of the variants received the ability so summon a medium or smaller animal with the celestial template once per day. I also seem to remember a book that was published under the OGL by Monte Cooke that had a variant paladin which summoned a sword and shield to use in battle in place of special mount. Those are a just a few ideas which have previously been used as a variant to the paladin's mount. Just remember that mounted combat is the paladin's main strength, when fighting on foot he is usually found wanting when compared to a fighter or barbarian, so whatever ability used to replace special mount really needs to pack a punch. The easiest solution is usually to borrow from other classes, and for that I would say favored enemy and fighter bonus feats would both be appropriate, at a slower progression than the fighter and ranger classes of course. Just be careful if the party already has a fighter or ranger, they may feel their area of the game is being infringed upon if another class is granted their abilities. |
