hey guys, i was poking about to see if this was ever covered, but in the BESM d20 system, there is a pet monster trainer type class. The idea being that the character has a monster that does all it's fighting for it etc. I was curious how to effectively make one for a D&D campaign.

I have given thought to a specialty druid, or perhaps a conjuration spellcaster... but Those still limit the type and duration of a "pet" monster.

My idea would be that the pet was always active, and at low levels obviously would be weak. For progression, there could be an option to upgrade the pet from one creature to a larger creature, or add some sort of template, or even possibly class levels. No skills for the pet other than "animal" type skills, like spot, listen, climb, jump.. etc

As far as the actual character in it's own right, perhaps a BAB advancement like wizard, as the character would do extremely minimal combat, simple weapons, and no armor.

I dunno, I have puttered around with the idea for a while, but I am very new to creating new classes, so I was hoping for some assistance in the logistics and balance department.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you want to play poke'mon...

but in all seriousness, this could work... except Id give the actual character very low ability scores in everything... except maybe charisma? i dunno, all i know is he'd be very weak, and have alot of negatives

well, the original Idea for this is from watching Anime, not particulary poke'mon, but there are a few good series' out there with the "pet" monster type thing going on. I am hoping to get a smattering of ideas to crank this into a playable, balaced, fun class. Most groups have the fighter, rogue, healer, and spell caster in them and are considered balanced. Well, the groups I usually get have at least one wildcard in them, and this would be the wildcard.

A few of the ideas that have been bouncing around would be:

Limited spell use for the "trainer": Specifically enchancement spells and minor curative spells for the "pet".

Empathy between trainer and pet.

I figure that stat wise, the character would not be limited. If the player rolls 6 18's by some freak accident, good for him; But for this class, the important stats would probably be charisma and intelligence.

Heck, in a way, the class is close to the wizard and familiar, except instead of the Wizard being the primary focus, it is the familiar.

One way around would be a "mini" version of the core classes (Puss n Boots :D ), pity most pets have low Int scores so normal classes are a no-no (unless we do the "monsters as races" stuff)

About Spell Use, how about giving the familiar a Scribe -like feat, something like:

Scribe Familiar
Wizard can scribe a spell on a piece of familiar skin , familiar can activate the spell by moving (or touching) that piece of skin.Wizard can scribe a spell on familiar once for every five levels of familiar.

Check Feat Leadership and Skill Handle Animals to get more ideas.Rest of the stuff is in the familiar entry in the PHB
