...that I don't really see any way to play. I speak here of the sort of mage that learns by studying, similar to a wizard, but once they have mastered a spell, they simply know it and don't have to prepare beforehand, like a sorcerer rather than a wizard. I've seen this type of character in many books, but there's no good way to put it into game terms that I'm aware of. However, I was thinking: perhaps it would be possible to take the /mechanics/ of the sorcerer and mess with them slightly, then change the flavor?
Specifically, I was thinking: make them Int-based rather than Charisma, to represent their studying and the memorization of spells. The spells known chart would then become the maximum number of spells they can remember and call up. The flavor would not be that they have inherent power, but just simply dedicate themselves to mastering a few number of spells so that they don't have to prepare them.
Does this sound viable/reasonable? I'm just curious for other opinions (bear in mind I thought of this right before falling asleep last night, so it's really just an idea in its infancy); if people have heard of other ways of playing this type of mage, let me know. Thanks for your time!
