I had heard that way back when Defiler was a class and I was wondering if anyone knew what the stats for it was.

They wrote up some stuff for defiling magic in a recent (within the last year) dragon magazine. I'll see if I can find it somewhere...

Dragon MAgazine # 315 has defiling magic, which in it's current incarnation is very interesting and playable (the old rules for defiling and preserving were... complex to say the least).

THe basic rundown is when you tap into magic, you're tapping into the very life energy of the immediate area. You can cast a spell without defling the area, but if you choose to steal energy, you gain some interesting benefits.

There's a scale of how many 'defiler points' you get for defiling an area, basically it allows you to apply a metamagic feat for free on the fly to a memorized spell or allows you te recall lost spells/ spell slots and a few other interesting things. The downside is, if your defiler score gets up there, you start becoming physically weaker and start taking penalties to skills. You can lose points in various ways, but if your defiler score gets too high you become a psuedo lich NPC thing.

The variant I used to use for 3.0 and 3.5 was similiar to the wildmage from complete arcane. You took a -4 to your caster level and rolled a D8. If you were below or at your current caster level, you cast the spell as normal (or diminshed) and no defiling took place. However if you cast the spell 'above your level' you were drawing the extra energy from the land and vegetation started to wilt and die (or turn to ash).
