Has anyone seen any variants on the Samurai core class from Complete Warrior that doesn't use TWF/if so can you point me in the right direction?
If not any suggestions? I imagine it'd be pretty simple to sub stuff in but my head just isn't up to it tonight... thanks.

I'm personally a fan of the Samurai out of Oriental Adventures. But if you're looking for a replacement for the CW Samurai (which would also be a good Samurai class if not for the forced TWF), then you could just patch it by replacing the TWF feats with bonus feats.

The original samurai, as far as I know, is from Oriental Adventures.

It gets full BAB, good fort and will saves, good class skills, 4 skill points per level, a bonus feat at 2nd level, followed by another bonus feat at 4th level, and another bonus feat every three levels thereafter (7th, 10th, 13th, 16th and 19th), and the Ancestral Daisho at 1st level. The Ancestral Daisho is a masterwork katana and a masterwork wakizashi (other weapon(s) can be substituted) that can be enhanced in a similar fashion to the weapon of a Kensai (from Complete Warrior), but using character level instead of class level, and replacing XP with the normal gp amount to create the item.

In my opinion, this version blew the fighter out of the water. Most people complain that the fighter gets too many feats, and not enough flavor stuff. The samuria fixes this with good saves and skills. He's also not limited to the traditional two weapon fighting image of the samurai, as his Ancestral Daisho can be just about anything.

Still, it lacks in overall flavor in a similar way to the fighter, and the Ancestral Daisho can be terribly broken (one level dip, anyone?). Trouble is, the CW samurai is too locked into a combat style, a style that is one of dozens of choices from Oriental Adventures. How about this?

20 Frightful PresenceAncestral Daisho: The character gains proficiency in two weapons of his choice. He recieves a masterwork version of each weapon upon taking the 1st level of samurai. He may enhance this weapon in the exact same manner as a Kensai, as if his Kensai level were one half of his samurai level, and replacing the XP cost with a treasure sacrifice with a value equal to what it would take to purchase the weapon as if it were being enchanted. The samurai must sacrifice this treasure during a period of meditation equal to one day per 1,000 gp in the cost of the enhancement being added.

This way, you get the flavor stuff (with the staredown and Ancestral Daisho), and the bonus feats that represent dedication to martial prowess without being locked into a specific form of combat. He gets considerably less bonus feats than a fighter, but gets way better skills and saves.

What do you think?
