So what kind of cheese can I do with 3.0's Persistent Spell and a familiar? :D Is it worth it? A Persistent Tensor's Transformation on a familiar to act as your bodyguard? Maybe also cast a persistent alter self on the familiar? |

| madam_mim10-29-06, 03:02 PM | What the highest level of spells you can cast? A plus six to spell level is pretty steep. Permanancy might be a better choice despite the XP loss. Still the range of the spell doesn't have to be personal but personal OR fixed (ie. touch, 10ft, 20ft, etc.) but not discharged (which I think screws most touch spells). Alter self would only allow the familiar to become another magical beast of the same size, right? You can do better than that. But still, a eighth level spell slot for a one-day-long level 2 spell seems pretty lacking. Until, you're epic and can persistent spell level 4 or 5 spells, what's the point? And even then it sorta sucks IMHO. Unless, of course, you use persistent spell on one of the crazier one round spells in the Spell Compendium like Wraithstrike or something. That would be sweet. But only affects you. Okay, I lost where I was going with this.... |

| FrostHammer10-29-06, 03:26 PM | Madam, this is 3.0 Persistent magic. In other words, it only uses up slot FOUR levels higher :D Ok, so Tensor's transformation is out unless I can somehow get 10th level spell slots? (How would I do that?) And also, is TOUCH fixed range? I really want it to be...but I'm not sure. EDIT: Does anyone know if my familiar would gain mucho HPs if I polymorph i into a creature with lots of HP (like a dragon?) Remember, 3.0 rules. |
| madam_mim10-29-06, 04:00 PM | As you noted, I'm following 3.5 progression, but I'm pretty sure becoming epic in 3.0 allows you to get 10th level spells with the Spell Knowledge feat, or higher than 10th if you take it again. But, again, at that point you could just make an instantaneous epic spell with better powers. Polymorph doesn't grant extra hit dice, it restores some though. That's my favorite choice for shared spells. |
| The_Shaman10-29-06, 05:18 PM | I think there were ways to get -1 to metamagic levels, but the only one I know of that works in 3.0 - become a dweomerkeeper - is right out for a sorcerer, as the 3 cleric levels will mean no 9th level spells for you anyway. Tenser is nice for an advanced familiar, like a krenshar or something else that is already pretty tough. Frankly, though, for me the mean stuff is using the familiar to deliver "touch-and-kill" spells with an improved invisibility if your foes are metagaming ("Hey, that raven looks weird. Let's pump it full of arrows!"). Some MT levels could give you enough clericky goodness to do the job. "Man, this is insane. I know a snake can kill you with a bite, but disintegrate you on the spot? Holy cattlepoop!" |
| FrostHammer10-29-06, 08:28 PM | I am very, very limited in my prestige classes and books, so that won't work. I've got a Wizard (specializes in Evocation. Bans Illusion and Necromancy, so no Invisiblity) who'll multi into an Ice Elemental Savant (modified. Won't change type to outsider at level 10. No immunity to poison, etc. Or was it immunity to sleep stuff?), and I'm thinking of creating a Druid, and I'm not quite sure if I should take Persistent Spell for a Druid. Druid will not multiclass. |
