A favored enemy question... [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-27-05, 08:56 PM I was wondering, does a Ranger who takes his own race as his favored enemy have to be LE, CE, or NE? What reasons behind him having to be evil, if he has to be, is there?

I am hoping this is posted in the right place, as I know it may fit other catagories.

In 3.0, it mean you must be cruel or hated your own people I think so you had to be evil.

But in 3.5, you have no restrictions. As an example:You can be a human Paladin who multiclasses into ranger and choose human as favored.
I think the designers of 3.5 realized there was no good reason for making you evil if you chose your race. So there got rid of that restriction.

05-27-05, 09:16 PM Sweet! I was told by my group that that was how it was. I offered justifiable reasons for a good charactor doing it and just got the retorical " You can't, you have to be evil" bs.

05-27-05, 09:36 PM Favoured Enemy does not mean "Hated" enemy. It can if you want it too, (stereotypical village being destroyed by Goblins, so you have a hatred of goblins).

More often than not though it is simply a certain type of creature or Race that your character has come into contact with several times in the past and you simply know how to deal with them better under certain circumstances.

Just keep in mind that the idea of a DnD Ranger is really just a glorified hunter/woodsman and you wont have any problems.

The hunter usually doesn't hate the deer he hunts and kills to feed his family, it's just simple survival.....Over time he's simply has gotten very good at hunting it == Favoured enemy Deer.

Nephlite is absolutely correct about the 3.0 vs. 3.5 versions of the Ranger.
Tell your group you do not have to be Evil at all.

Mebe my next charactor will be a Ranger/Scout/Dervish...with the appropriate favored enemy :D
