Few days a go someone wrote on how to make the fighter more attractive. Unfortunately in cannot find the thread again (it was about making the feat level dependant)

This what I have come up with, this is a rough draft how I see things (I can not put too much detail other wise it will end up being war and peace)

We could have the feat level dependant and linked in a chain. Basically instead of having a feat you buy into a feat chain.

Coupled with that I propose the following option for a more generic yet more focus fighter or combatant class/prestige Class
I would base it all on the fighter
This what I propose you could chose either a strength or a dexterity fighter
When you start you can pick up 3 feat chains.
You would get feat allocation as normal character (and not as the actuall fighter) but every five level you get a bonus feat. With to feat allocation you can start new feat chains.
So a human fighter would start with 5 feat chains. You can chose a feat chain twice it will improve twice as fast.

You start knowing one weapon, one shield/and other weapon. As you improve in level you will be able to use more weapons (may be on new weapon per level or weapon type every 4level. (The bonus due to chain feats applies to the weapon you know and are not weapon specific)

Strength fighter
Use physical power to fight
Use strength bonus to attack and damage
You can use any Armour; any buckler any martial and normal weapon.
You can not use two weapon fighting offensively you can hold two weapon and deliver attack with either of then without penalties but it does not increase your number of attack.
You get the power attack feat chain
Hit dice
D10 fighter save
Or
Monk/athletic training
D8, monk save

Dext fighter
Uses precise and nimble move.
Use dexterity bonus to BaB and damage.
You can use only light Armour, and any weapon one handed weapon, you can fight with two weapon offensively (extra attack)
You get two-weapon fighting feart chain to start with
Hit dice
D10 reflexes best save
Or
Monk/athletic training
D8, monk save

Feat chain:
Combat (every two level)
Close combat (strength or dex) (improved trip wrestle and so on as a chain)
Hand to hand (strength or dex) (mobility and expertise)
Shooting (strengh or dext)

armour
Armour bonus to AC or malus reduction
Un-armored (strengh or dext)
Armour light(strengh or dext)
Armour medium (strengh)
Armour heavy (strengh)

General
Generic combat (feat like improved initiative, blind fighting, iron will, improved reflexes and so on as one feat chain each)

High education: (you get 4+ Intel mod skill)

Scouting: (you can use the ranger or the barbarian skill progression)

Mounted fighting(strengh or dext)
Bonus to fight in an against monted troups and defensive strike when fighting from a mount

Infantry fighting (strengh or dext)
Bonus to fight in and against formation

Airborne fighting (strengh or dext)
As mounted fighting

Sea born fighting (strengh or dext)
Bonus when fighting on a boat or an unstable surface (like the spell grease)

Underground fighting (strengh or dext)
Bonus when fighting unbdrgroind

Urban fighting (strengh or dext)
Bonus when fighting in town or and building

Healer
Bonus in administering treatment

Public fighting (strengh or dext)
Bonus when fighting in front of a crowd/gladiator trick

War Engine (strengh or dext):
bonus usage of siege engine or heave projectile launcher and siege warcraft

Mage fighter (strengh or dext) 5 level after taking the feat arcane spell with ranger progression

Magic hater (strengh or dext) :restrict the use of magical object but enable to hit monster that can only be hit by magical weapon)

Monster slayer (strengh or dext): like the ranger favored enemy

Body guard (strengh or dext)
As per prestige class

Weapon master
you limit your weapon knowledge to a single weapon or a group of weapon (one every 5 level) and you get bonus to hit and damage to those particular weapon

This formula could be used for paladin, cleric and ranger, they keep their save and hit dice (or –2 to the hit dice if you want to take mont/atheletic training)
And we could consider their special abilities as 1 feat chain and the spell progression as and other one for the ranger and paladin.
For the cleric we could say that the clearic abilities cost one feat chain and his spell progression 2.

Obviously the feats chains need to be fleshed out but the feat as they are now are not too hard to chain or to transform into level relted.
-Either the benefit improve level/(3or 4) or it is a mix of feats one new feat every 3 or 4 level)

any opinions ?

I'd be happy with dex fighter=rogue if I could swap out the Sneak Attack for a full BAB and a couple of feats (+/- fighter-only feats, since it is a fighter).

OTOH a high-level rogue sneak-attacking with a Wand of Enervation is nothing to sneeze at...

hello lina
i would think a rogue is a thief (not a the same bab, hit point, some skill that have nothing to do with warrior and a sneak attack so i think it can not fill the role of a dex fighter,
I agree that there is one though, its the swashbucler

but I though it could really be integrated straight to te fighter class to start with.
I am not especially in favour of dex fighter per se.
which i think is your point, conceptually fighter are supposed to use strengh and const.

that being said i think the swas bucler prestige class fills a need as well. And may be someone would like to play the equivalent of a velites or hobillard. so why not
philippe

what i really tried to do is have some sort of fighter kit.
as i said before i do not think the fighter is especially unbalanced it is just that the feat are sort of too narrow and are sort of dead end in a sense that ok you what to be a mobility fighter you just have the possibility for 4 feats and that is. of course you can take something else but that kill the impression of development (ie getting better ar what you do) if i make kind of sense.
