I'm trying to think up of a new class for my campaign setting. After going through a lot of drafts and looking at some other core classes I found that a lot of them are either too powerful or unnecessary in that they fill a role already taken by one of the original core classes (barbarian, bard, cleric, etc.) Can anyone think of a role that could be filled, something that they've come across that could help me personally, or found a class that they've used and worked nicely without interfering with the roles of the original core classes?

Things that I've looked at so far are classes that add sort of a more urban or civilized tone to the campaign, such as Eberron's artificer, Dragonlance's noble, and Unearthed Arcana's urban ranger, just to let you know what I'm aiming at.

1. If you look in Warcraft handbook, you'll find the Tinker (techno dude, creation of stuff like guns and other technology). Gnomes are known in some legends/storylines as being technological so this fills that role.

I found it balanced (has no armor prioficiencies naturally).

New golems like Steam golem, Junk Golem, etc if they have arcane freinds or multiclass arcane casters. (requires a certain Tinker level as well as arcane spells).

2. Another one: Rune Master (kinda an arcane casting/monk class without the Wisdom bonus to AC). Kinda cool, it has Rune Families that grant abilities like domains do. I call it 1/2 monk because it has Flurry and unarmed damage though no weapon proficiencies except unarmed strike.
You can only cast runes from families you choose (starts with 2 families and gets more later). He cast spontanously but all spells are full round casting. Luckily adding metamagic doesn't increase spell time (already long enough).

3. Champion from website where the comic Order of the Stick is from:

I've seen the Tinker from Warcraft RPG and it's a little bit more advance for my campaign. I'm sticking with a medieval technology level, and I think that by allowing the Tinker it would maybe raise it to renaissance level. Thanks for the suggestion though. Where can I find the Rune Master class?
